we've seen some kiddie shots of wouter, submitted by henk, but we've never posted official current pics of us on the site. i guess it's only been for privacy issues in the past. Since we covered so many events this year, and Ultimatecarpage.com is only getting bigger by the day, we've decided it might be a good time to reveal ourselves to all of you who haven't met us personally. we had some professional shots taken of the executive last January when we met for our first board meeting (AKA Detroit Autoshow and Cavallino Classic).

The only one I have is a bit out of focus though.

Hey Rob, were you a mod when you first joined?

yes, because i was involved in the development. not so much the code (cuz i can't code worth a sh*t) but more of the new design ideas, clothing store, etc.

and of course the consistent show coverage. wouter and i have chatted for a long time, but i started with official show coverage back in 2003 with the Detroit Auto Show.

first Q, from Wouter, via me.

What made the 1955 Mille Miglia victory legendary, other than the record time?

netburner
09-28-2005, 05:19 AM
1955 Mille Miglia:

- Stirling Moss was the first winner who wasn't italian since 1931
- Denis Jenkinson used a roadbook in a can, it was many meters long
- they also tried to use a incar-radio, but it wasn't good enough for the rough roads and the loud car
- with 10hrs 7min 48sec it was the fastest time of all times
- average speed: 157,65 kph

the question is too overall for me, you can say the victory was legendary because of the car - mercedes SLR with red 722, it was the record time of the mille miglia that wasn't broken up to this day, maybe that stirling moss won that race and didn't won F1 championship (not sure if you'd call that legendary anyway) and it was the first victory of the silver arrow team

Let me rephraze then. Why is it remembered so well to this day? And I don't mean the fact that MB have been whoring the car all over the place because of the lack of any other really successful racer.

still this question has many answers :)

maybe because it was the fastest average speed record broken then
or because they made a reconnaissance lap beforehand making notes on a scroll paper that helped them winning the race
or because it was the real last original mille miglia - however there was a race in 1956 but it was banned in 1957 due to two deaths during the race

that's acceptable

In 1910, Harry Houdini was the first solo pilot to fly a plane in Australia. He taught himself to drive an automobile just so he could drive out to the airfield- and he never drove again.
