Not a bad car, but I still prefer the outgoing 456 GT and GTA models over this. Maybe it's just gonna have to grow on me, we'll see I guess.

Jean Todt has been doing double-duty, assisting in the road-car division of Ferrari. He presented the first 612 on Monday Oct 4, 2004 in Beverly Hills to the Guess! clothing designer George Marciano, and then immediately left for Japan for the Japanese Grand Prix.

I guess the 2+2 idea is ok, but I think Ferrari should solely stick to 2 seater sports cars. Thats just their heritage although there are some older Ferrari's that have been 2+2's.

I'd rather drive in a 612 when the ride takes more than 5 hours...
The 612 may be the ugliest Ferrari ever but it's still a convenient GT.

Two Ferrari 612 Scagliettis prepare to set a new record for the first full Tour of China

Shanghai, 6 July 2005 – Ferrari has had a natural association with the race track since the first Prancing Horse competed in 1947 and since then has been inextricably linked with the leading circuits across the world. It is, however, slightly more unusual to associate modern-day Ferrari with the kind of adventure associated with Mille Miglia and Carrera Panamericana-style endurance events.

Those legendary historical races demonstrated the versatility and strength of the cars of the day, but they were also much more dangerous and less well-tested than today’s cars. That type of race no longer exists and to put a sophisticated, powerful car like the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti to the test nowadays requires at least 10 to 15,000 miles of very tough terrain.

In 1997 a Ferrari F355 completed a round the world trip taking in all five continents. The car was driven by 147 different journalists from the various countries it crossed and each one left his signature on the car’s bodywork. 1997 was also Ferrari’s 50th anniversary and the World Tour, as it was known, was staged to tell the world how very much alive and successful the company was and also to demonstrate the reliability of a model that would prove of huge strategic importance in Ferrari’s development. The adventure proved an extraordinary success with the F355 leaving New York on 18 March and returning there to finish the tour after 75 days, quite literally, on the road.

It now gives Ferrari great pleasure to announce the launch of another similar adventure. This time, however, two 612 Scagliettis will leave Shanghai on 29 August 2005 for a grand tour of China, driven by Chinese and international journalists. No other constructor has ever undertaken such a daunting task. The route covers an enormous range of very different terrains and challenges. The cars will endure extremes of cold and heat, incredibly tough road conditions and environmental obstacles of all kinds.

The 612 Scagliettis will first head north and then east toward Manchuria. After this they will drive south-west to Beijing and then along the Great Wall as far as Lanzhou. From there they will cover over 3,000 km at an altitude of more than 4,000 metres as far as Lhasa in Tibet before heading back west through the Gobi Desert to the ancient city of Kashi, site of Marco Polo’s famous silk market. After a further dash through the desert, the two 612 Scagliettis will drive on to Urumqi and then down through the tropical part of the country to Guangzhou, which is more familiar to us as Canton. From there they will continue on through the most modern and western part of China back to Shanghai after a round trip of 15,000 miles. If all goes according to plan, the two 612 Scagliettis should complete their tour of China in 45 days.

The Tour has received the valued support of the Chinese authorities as well as logistical support from Fiat China. It is also being staged in partnership with some of Ferrari’s most faithful sponsors, including Shell (fuels and lubricants with specialist support in the toughest areas), Puma (for crew clothing), Alcoa (technical partner and builder of the 612’s aluminium chassis), Pirelli (supplier of specialist tyres for the various terrains) and Saima Avandero (transportation of the cars, wheel rims and spares). We will also be joined by a Chinese partner, Xin Yu Watch & Clock, the leading distributor of Swiss timepieces in China. Assistance and spares will be provided by four vehicles: two Fiat cars and two specially equipped Iveco trucks.

A total of 15 international journalists and 15 Chinese journalists will drive the route at different times. The www.ferrariworld.it company site and dedicated www.media.ferrari.com media site will have constantly updated news and high definition, reproducible photos from the tour.

The Tour starts on 29 August 2005 from Shanghai and in the main territories to be crossed the expedition members will meet with local authorities and present them with a Prancing Horse trophy as a symbolic gift.

The two 612 Scaglietti cars are in complementary colours. One will be red with a silver bonnet and the other will be silver with a red bonnet. They are modified only very minimally – they will have a larger fuel tank with petrol filters that are easily accessed for cleaning purposes, under body protectors and slightly higher suspension to cope with the more challenging terrain. Their headlights will also be protected by a metal grille and some of the air intakes will be modified to allow them to traverse water-logged areas in safety. In every other respect, however, the cars are "normal" production models with a 540 hp V12 engine and a maximum torque of 588 Nm, dry sump lubrication, a six-speed gearbox and a Transaxle transmission.

In addition to the journalists, a photographer and video camera operator, there will also be nine other expedition members who will provide technical, logistical and linguistic assistance.

En route, the cars will stop off at the 10 Ferrari dealerships now up and running in China, at Yanzhou where Pirelli has signed a joint-venture contract aimed at starting the manufacturing of tyres, at several of the major Shell service stations, and at Fiat’s Chinese base at Nanjing.

Ferrari in China

Ferrari first arrived in China in 1993 through an importer but is now present with a joint venture, Ferrari Maserati Cars International Trading, which was launched in October 2004. Ferrari holds a majority share in the company with its partners Poly Technologies and Wo Kee Hong. Ferrari Maserati Cars International Trading is the exclusive importer of Ferrari and Maserati cars in China and manages the marketing, sales to dealerships, spares, accessories and technical assistance activities of both marques in the country.

The local staff are trained directly by the factory to guarantee our Chinese clients a quality service in line with Ferrari and Maserati’s renowned high standards. Ferrari considers China to be a market of great strategic importance. In fact, since the joint venture was launched, a total of 42 Prancing Horse cars have been sold. The Chinese market is expected to become Ferrari’s fifth or sixth largest world market in terms of numbers of cars sold over the next two or three years alone.

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

The 612 Scaglietti is the result of an avant-garde design that continues Ferrari’s long and glorious 2+2 tradition, combining a cabin capable of accommodating four occupants in comfort with blistering Ferrari sports car performance.

The 612 Scaglietti is the very first ever Ferrari 12-cylinder to boast both an all-aluminium space frame chassis and body. The result of cutting-edge production and assembly techniques, the new car’s all-aluminium construction reduces its weight by 40% and gives it excellent torsional rigidity. In addition to this, the 612 Scaglietti’s near-perfect weight distribution (46% front and 54% rear) means that it offers both the high performance driving of a rear-engined car and the roomy versatility of a front-engined layout.

The CST electronic stability and traction control system enhances the 612 Scaglietti’s dynamic handling even further. This is the first time the system has been used in a Ferrari and it guarantees optimal performance in tandem with complete safety. Its imposing 65° V12 engine was developed using Ferrari’s most advanced racing technologies and punches out a maximum of 540 hp at 7,250 rpm.

The Pininfarina-designed 612 Scaglietti was named in honour of Sergio Scaglietti, the legendary Modenese coachbuilder who created some of the most beautiful cars to come out of Maranello in the early years of Enzo Ferrari’s extraordinary reign.

The route and main stages

The route begins and ends in Shanghai and is divided into 11 main stages (see attached map) which will also act as the crew changeover points. The first stage sees the expedition leave Shanghai bound for Beijing, a 3,000-kilometre, seven-day journey away. En route it will take in the city of Shenyang at the very north-eastern tip of China near the border with Mongolia.

The second major stage takes the cars along the Great Wall of China from Beijing to Lanzhou, a 2,100 km dash over four days. At Lanzhou, the cars begin their descent into south-western China which will culminate in a very tough stretch at altitudes of over 4,000 m and take them into the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, after a seven-day drive, on 19th of September. From there the expedition will retrace its steps as far as Goldmud where it will turn north-west, stopping off at the northernmost tip of the route in the city of Urumqi, over 2,700 km from Lhasa. Next the cars head for Kashi, home to one of the most famous silk markets encountered by Marco Polo on his travellers. This time the leg will be a "mere" 1,400 km, to be covered in three days.

From Kashi the expedition turns back towards the east bound for Jiayuguan, 2,500 km away, which it will reach in six days. From there the cars will drive down to the south-east coast through to the major city of Chongqing (2,000 km to be covered in six days) and then on to Guangzhou (Canton), a further 2,000 km away. After this they begin the home run, via Wenzhou (1,500 km from Canton), back to Shanghai, where they are expected to arrive on the evening of October 29th.

2005 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti in Tibet

(from Ferrari Press Release) A request has been made to Guinness World Records to register the record-breaking achievement of two Ferrari 612 Scaglietti which are currently participating in the Tour of China. This marks the first time that a standard, road-registered 540hp two-wheel drive production car has achieved an altitude of 5,231 metres – across the Tanggulashan mountain pass, on the border between the Autonomous Region of Tibet and China.

The cars, driven by international journalists, reached the mountain pass easily. Despite the reduced oxygen levels available at such a high altitude, and the lower quality of fuel available in the area, the Ferrari’s 5.7-litre V12 engine, performed effortlessly without any necessary modifications.

The expedition has crossed the Tibetan plateau, one of the most isolated regions of the world, with the cars being driven for thousands of miles at over 3,000 metres altitude, from Lhasa, Tibet’s main city and the ancient home of the Dalai Lama.

In Lhasa, as in other cities reached by the Tour, the Team was welcomed with enthusiasm by more than 200 children of a local school which received books, school equipment and toys for the children as part of the Tour of China’s programme to help schools most in need.

The China Tour started on 29 August in Shanghai and now moves on to the Gobi Desert, passing through Kashi (Kaxgar), the most continental city of the world and home of a wealthy silk market which dates from the days of Marco Polo.

Pininfarina presents an exclusive custom-made version of the prestigious Scaglietti at Villa d’Este

Turin, April 18 2006. An exclusive custom-made version of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, commissioned to Pininfarina by the American car collector, Peter Kalikow, will be exhibited at the 2006 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance.

Peter Kalikow, Chairman of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), asked Pininfarina to design, engineer and build a special version of the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, through a Style development aimed to enhance the car’s own elegance and exclusiveness.

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, whose “Granturismo soul” perfectly matches with class and elegance, is currently the most exclusive car within Ferrari models.
For these reasons, the Style activity performed for Peter Kalikow has been accepted by Ferrari as an enhancement of its own myth and tradition and as a strengthening of the relationship with Pininfarina, established at the time when the Turin coachbuilder created exclusive models for car enthusiasts all over the world.

The whole Project has been based on some clear and simple wishes expressed by the customer: “The car should be totally re-bodied, but the Style changes should be so slight and fine to allow to no more than 10% of Ferrari experts to catch them at a first glance.
The customer has personally followed the Style development and has actively contributed to the selection of the car features and to the choice of colours and materials.
Peter Kalikow special Ferrari 612 Scaglietti has been developed as a real custom-built car. The car has been equipped with a series of accessories specifically required by the customer to enjoy the maximum comfort during the daily use.

The work has been managed by Pininfarina Special Projects Division and has been totally carried out at the company ateliers in Cambiano; the result for this activity is a unique car, modern and classic at the same time and perfectly fitting with the spirit of Peter Kalikow’s collection.

The main special features of the car are the front grille, reminding of the fifties and sixties models; a glass roof with a combination of liquid crystals and photovoltaic cells; a wide air outlet on front fenders, evolving from the side panel volumes; fins enveloping the rear backlight and inspired to the most beautiful drawings made by Pininfarina; rear lights recalling Ferrari Enzo.

Interiors have been modified according to the customer’s wish and have been equipped with devices allowing him to comfortably feel and drive in a custom-made compartment, where all details have been conceived and designed exclusively for him.

Pininfarina work underlines the company’s choice to provide its selected customers with the unique opportunity of designing, engineering and building their “dream car”.
By keeping constantly focused on the product and on its demanding customers, Pininfarina aims to stress its tradition of excellence and the values that brought the company to be a model in the automotive field.

Style, quality, the special features and the very limited volumes for Pininfarina Special Projects make each car a cult object that will grant unique emotions to its owner.

FERRARI 612 SCAGLIETTI WALLPAPER*

FERRARI’S FLAGSHIP FOUR-SEATER – AS DESIGNED BY WALLPAPER*

A genuine four-seater Ferrari, the all-aluminium 612 Scaglietti is the result of an avant-garde design that guarantees the pure, thoroughbred performance demanded by Ferraristi combined with uncompromising driver and passenger comfort.

In a unique partnership with Wallpaper*, the leading magazine for design, interiors, fashion and travel, Ferrari GB invited Wallpaper’s award-winning Creative Director Tony Chambers and Art Editors Meirion Pritchard and David McKendrick to design a stylish and sophisticated Ferrari 612 Scaglietti interpreting the unlimited possibilities available via the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme.

Massimo Fumarola, Director of Product Portfolio Development for Ferrari S.p.A. commented: ‘We were delighted with the approach taken by Wallpaper* to this very special car. The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme offers clients almost complete creative freedom and the result with this car is truly amazing, combining a trend-setting style with traditional luxury.’

In addition to the new Handling GTC package and F1 gearbox, Wallpaper* specified the car in a stunning but subtle two-tone paint scheme, with two complementary colours Nero and Blu Pozzi which are also silhouetted in the interior of the car, which has Nero and Blu Scuro leather Daytona seats with Blu stitching.

The bespoke aspects of the car, designed and manufactured under Ferrari’s Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme, are: Wallpaper* branding on the aluminium kickplates, discreet branding on the leather of the glovebox lid, and a custom-made leather pocket for the magazine’s new Wallpaper* City Guides which will be launched in September 2006 as part of the Wallpaper* 10th anniversary celebrations.

Massimo Fedeli, Managing Director of Ferrari GB said: ‘Ferrari clients in the UK are amongst the most demanding and discerning in the world. We asked Wallpaper* to create this unique car to stimulate a debate which would encourage a new generation of personalised Ferraris that reflect the taste, style, elegance and luxury that lie at the heart of Ferrari.’

The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme isn’t restricted to just the car. Wallpaper* wanted to extend the bespoke elements to the matching six-piece luggage set which has not only been designed in the same Nero and Blu Scuro leather as the interior of the 612 Scaglietti, but the scallops on the luggage (which reflect the scallops which grace the side of the car itself) also feature Wallpaper* branding to ensure the car is truly unique.

FERRARI 612 SCAGLIETTI – OVERVIEW

The flagship car in the Ferrari range, this 2+2 model signals a genuine break with the past. Ferrari has changed the rules of the game with the 612 Scaglietti to suit the tastes and needs of a highly sophisticated clientele which now demands elegance and dynamic comfort as well as blistering performance. The 612 Scaglietti is very much a third millennium product, offering a whole new generation of technologies compared to the 2+2 it replaces. In fact, it isn’t really a 2+2 at all but more a genuine roomy two-door four-seater that offers its occupants a comfortable, pleasant ride in all driving conditions.

Grand Tourers are a real Ferrari tradition: the Prancing Horse marque built its first 12-cylinder 2+2 in 1948 (the 166 Inter, bodied by Touring), and then added other famous models clothed by such celebrated names as Ghia, Pinin Farina, and Vignale. These included the 212 Inter (1951), the 250 GT (1960), the 330 GT (1964), and the 365 GT (1967) which, for the very first time, boasted an automatic gearbox on some of the examples built for the American market, right up until the 456M of the 1990s.

The new model, skilfully designed by Pininfarina to clothe the engineers’ technical and functional solutions in an aggressive yet elegant body, was named by Ferrari S.p.A. President Luca di Montezemolo in honour of Sergio Scaglietti, the Modenese stylist and coachbuilder who excelled in sculpting aluminium. In fact, Scaglietti was responsible for bodying some of the most beautiful Ferraris of the 1950s and 60s.

The 6 of the 612 indicates the car’s displacement (5,748 cc rounded off), while 12 is the number of cylinders boasted by the engine. This is a car with all of the fiery temperament and driving pleasure of a thoroughbred Ferrari, combining thrilling performance, agility and safety. But it also goes a step further, offering rear passengers two comfortable, roomy seats.

The second design choice to influence the 612 Scaglietti’s styling was its architecture. A mid-front layout with the engine mounted behind the front axle, and the gearbox and differential in unit at the rear ensure that the centre of gravity is kept as far back and as low as possible. Other significant masses (cabin, cooling and exhaust systems, battery, fuel tank) are also positioned much further back than in a conventional layout.

These solutions, combined with an all-aluminium structure which lightens the entire car, deliver a centre of gravity that is considerably lower and further back plus near-perfect weight distribution (46% front, 54% rear). A particularly impressive achievement in a front-engined four-seater.

The 612 Scaglietti offers the kind of dynamic performance (0-62 mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds), stability and nimble manoeuvrability generally only found in a mid-rear engined car, and still has an exceptional amount of space for its passengers and their luggage. The car’s performance is enhanced by a performance-oriented handling set-up with active damping and the special CST stability and traction control system, also in use for the very first time on a Ferrari.

As is traditional at the Prancing Horse, the new car also benefits from the most advanced Ferrari engine and transmission technologies as well as highly sophisticated aerodynamic research. The 65° V12, which displaces almost six litres, is a specially tailored development of the prestigious Ferrari sports car engines. The V12 represents the very pinnacle of Ferrari engine design, thanks in particular to improved fluid dynamic characteristics of the intake and exhaust manifolds, generating a blistering 540 hp at 7250 rpm (almost 100 hp more than the 456M could manage). The result is a car that is easy to handle in all kinds of conditions and hits speeds of over 320 km/h at full throttle.

The 612 Scaglietti has the soul of a sporty berlinetta and the dimensions and design of a luxurious, surprisingly roomy Grand Tourer. Its innovative styling enhances its architecture (long wheel base, cab-rear layout, tiny overhangs) and highlights its dynamism and power.

It boasts a large, sculpted body, long aerodynamic bonnet, strong lines, and characteristic scalloped-sides – the latter a clear reference to the famous 375 MM built for film director Roberto Rossellini as a gift for his wife Ingrid Bergman.

As a genuine ‘four-seater’, the 612 Scaglietti does not compromise when it comes to occupant comfort. In fact, a host of features, ranging from the size of the doors to specially developed solutions, such as the hinging system and the easy entry function, means that all four passengers will find it easy to get in and out of the car at all times.

DESIGN

The design of the 612 Scaglietti fully expresses the model’s new values. In fact, Ferrari made a conceptual choice with Pininfarina to ensure that the four-seater would be a genuine departure from previous Grand Tourer models. It also made a technical decision that the bodywork would have to clothe a completely innovative structural layout. The 612 Scaglietti translates this approach into wonderfully aerodynamic lines. It is softly and elegantly aggressive, sculpted to express the powerful personality of a prestigious high performance, surprisingly roomy car.

Its strong lines run over full, solid surfaces, creating sensual forms that still have the tension of a true thoroughbred.

The long scallops on the 612 Scaglietti’s flanks lend it character and aerodynamic elegance too. These are borrowed from another famous Ferrari, the 375 MM ordered by Roberto Rossellini as a gift for his wife Ingrid Bergman. The choice of the scalloped sides was far from casual as the only example ever built of the 375 MM was shown at the Paris Show in 1954: it was a truly magnificent model that married high performance engineering with a sophisticated, thoroughbred body.

The front wheel arches are very long with a shorter overhang while the rear ones are prominent and muscular to support the C-post. A dihedral enhances the line along the whole upper side. The projector headlights have transparent covers. The 612 Scaglietti’s twin xenon projector headlights also offer a beam that is far superior to traditional halogen lights.

The traditional Ferrari air intake is given an original twist with the wheel arches protruding slightly further than the bonnet. The latter, thanks to a low, pulled-back engine, is set deep between the wheel arches which are the car’s dominant volumes and give it an aerodynamic flourish accentuated by the crisp aluminium crease.

The rear section is big and solid-looking with the classic high tail lights. This design meets the aerodynamic demands of the slender profile that increases downforce. Especially for the 612 Scaglietti, Ferrari has added two new shades to its colour range: ‘Rubino Micalizzato’ and ‘Blu Mirabeau’.

INTERIOR

The 612 Scaglietti boasts a wonderfully sophisticated sporty interior that reflects its all-aluminium structure and advanced technologies. The pressed or solid aluminium used for the interior becomes a decorative element: it’s there on the climate control buttons, the F1A paddles, the pedals and passenger treadplate.

The dashboard offers the driver a cluster of analogue and digital instruments. Alongside the big rev counter is the five inch multifunctional display with three modes: base, trip computer and tyre pressure.

The main driving controls are all mounted on the steering wheel too. The dynamic driving buttons are on the right (activate/deactivate Sport and CST) and the display buttons are on the left.

The cabin’s functionality is highlighted by the use of great swathes of beautifully crafted leather which is hand-stitched and discreetly but incredibly comfortably padded. The same leather used for the seats is also used for the door pockets handles, and knee rests too.

This is an exclusive, sporty cabin in which comfort is assured by the climate control and audio systems. The former is dual-zone and automatically regulates in-car temperature, humidity and ventilation levels. Aluminium controls on the central console allow both driver and front passenger to set the air flow strengths and desired temperature (17 to 27 °C). The vent clusters (on the dash, doors and central tunnel) guarantee excellent comfort levels to all of the occupants.

The sound system includes radio, CD player (a compartment on the dash holds four CDs while a further six are contained in the CD loader in the boot) and a six-channel digital unit, developed especially for the 612 Scaglietti by Bose®. Cutting edge in the automobile sector, the system offers the same kind of audio quality of a top flight home entertainment centre. The system boasts three tweeters on the dash, two woofers and two tweeters on the sides of the rear seats, one amplified 100 W bass box in the front and one 100 W amplified subwoofer (diameter 250 mm) at head-level. A microphone in the roof lamp controls the Audio Pilot™ which automatically equalises the sound if it senses other background noise or disturbance. Other features offered as standard with the 612 Scaglietti include: a dusk sensor switch which automatically turns on the headlights when activated, a rain sensor for automatic windscreen wiper actioning; an antitheft system with alarm (the immobiliser is controlled by inserting the key which has an in-built transponder).

The luggage compartment is bigger too: 240 litres as opposed to the 456M’s 190 and the spare tyre cubby hole can be used for extra luggage too.

‘Carrozzeria Scaglietti’ Personalisation Programme

The Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme allows clients, in typical Ferrari style, to choose the styling flourishes, finishes and accessories for the car to suit their own tastes and needs, adding a truly ‘personal touch’ to their 612 Scaglietti. This forges a special relationship between Ferrari’s clients and their cars.

Four specific areas are covered by the programme: Race and Track, Exterior and Colours; Interior and Materials; Equipment and Travel.

New for 2006 are the HGTS and HGTC sports equipment packages which offer customers the option of specially designed modular wheels, a tuned sports exhaust system and revised suspension and gearbox settings, with the HGTC package also including Carbon Ceramic Brakes.

Specifically, the two packages include:

HGTS Package: Sports Exhausts, Modular Wheel Rims 19" with Sport Tyres, Coloured Brake Callipers, Specific Suspension Control ECU, Revised F1 Gearbox Software with Shorter Gear Shift times.

HGTC Package: Carbon-Ceramic Brake Discs, CCM System Monoblock Brake Callipers, Sports Exhaust, Ball-polished Modular Wheel Rims 19" with Sport Tyres, Colour Brake Callipers, Specific Suspension Control ECU and Revised F1 Gearbox Software with Shorter Gear Shift times.

With Exterior and Colours, for instance, clients can choose a body paint that is not in the range or a colour matching a sample. They can also put ‘Scuderia Ferrari’ shields on the fenders or have red, yellow or aluminium grey brake callipers. Other options include 19’’ modular five spoke rims wheel with titanium screws (designed by Pininfarina) or a version polished using an exclusive system to enhance its shape and volumes.

There is a plethora of personalisation options for the cabin too. Clients can choose, amongst other things, the colours of the area above the dash or those lower down in the interior, order heated front seats, special finishes or Daytona-style upholstery as featured on the Ferrari berlinetta cars of the past.

The Travel section offers a radio-satellite navigation system that includes a radio, a CD player and navigator in a single unit, integrated phone devices including Bluetooth technology (the cell phone and stereo unit can talk to each other cordlessly). Parking sensors are also available.

A special repair and wheel inflation kit comes with the 612 Scaglietti as standard. Upon request 19" spare and ‘run flat’ tyres are available. The latter, which can travel 120 km at zero pressure at speeds of up to 80 km/h, have a reinforced section that stops the structure and profile collapsing.

Also available to make life aboard even more luxurious is the exclusive six-piece Ferrari luggage set specially designed by Pininfarina for the luggage compartment.

Ferrari's 60th Anniversary

Marathon round the world celebratory relay officially started in Abu Dhabi by Piero Ferrari after announcement of 60th Anniversary car.

Maranello (Italy), January 29th 2007 - The marathon relay celebrating Ferrari's 60th anniversary started this morning from the Italian Embassy in Abu Dhabi at 10 a.m. local time. The relay will involve over 10,000 Ferrari owners and their cars of all ages. These will act as symbolic "bearers" of a specially commissioned relay baton adorned with 60 badges symbolising the most extraordinary events in the Marque's 60-year history.

Abu Dhabi was chosen as the start point for the relay - which after the Middle East makes its way across China, Japan, Australia, South Africa, America and the whole of Europe - as a result of plans to build a major Ferrari theme park plus a motor racing circuit on the island of Yas in the most rapidly developing area of the Emirates' capital.

Having left Abu Dhabi, the protagonists of the first leg of the relay headed for Dubai from where they will drive on to Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait. The marathon relay will end at Maranello on June 23rd. The participants in the tour will be received at the various Italian embassies in the countries they pass through en route to Maranello. Also on June 16th, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will host a special ceremony at the Palazzo della Farnesina in Rome during which there will be a charity auction by Ferrari, the proceeds of which will be donated to needy children.

The relay was officially started by Piero Ferrari, Vice President of Ferrari and son of founder Enzo Ferrari. In his speech, Ferrari spoke about his father and his brilliant intuition in creating a Marque that has become a symbol of Italian talent and exclusivity across the world. He also praised Luca di Montezemolo who has, over the last 15 years, returned Ferrari to the very pinnacle of the sporting and commercial worlds.

The launch of a special celebratory anniversary series of cars was also announced at the start of the relay. The series will consist of just 60 unique cars, each one linked to one of the 60 most important events in the Prancing Horse's history, from the World titles won by Ascari and Schumacher to the launch of epoch-making models such as the GTO, the F40 and the Enzo, and also the people who have headed the company to the present day.

Ferrari embarks upon this 12 months of celebrations having just ended an exceptionally brilliant financial year that saw the Company post revenues of ¿1,447 million (+12.3% on 2005's takings) resulting in a trading profit of ¿183 million (+17%) and 5,650 deliveries to its worldwide dealership network, a new record.

The Relay Baton

The relay baton was designed and created to symbolise Ferrari's history and is topped by a dazzling platinum and diamond Prancing Horse made by Damiani. It also features 60 enamel symbols designed by the Intesta e D'Adda, Lorenzini, Vigorelli and BBDO advertising agencies, and by creative talents Alessandro Migliorini of Area Creativa, Marco Morosini, Enzo Naso of the eponymous studio and Wolfgang Seidl of Seidldesign.

Ferrari Theme Park

Scheduled to open in 2009, the new Ferrari Theme Park will cover a massive 250,000 sqm and will feature 24 themed attractions for all the family, including a 70-metre-high G-Force Tower and a twin rollercoaster ride that for the first time allows to race against each other. Moreover, go-karting, rally driving and dune buggy tracks, and a vast array of food and beverage outlets.

In addition to the Ferrari Park, however, the 2,500-hectare Yas Island will also host a motor racing circuit, signature hotels, apartments, villas, a wide selection of restaurants, a retail area of about 300,000 sqm, golf courses, a water park, a tourist marina, a hotel overlooking the lagoon and numerous food and beverage outlets that will create a unique international tourist destination.

The Ferrari Theme Park project and construction, as well as the whole Yas Island development is by Aldar Properties, and the total investment for the Park is of around US$600 million.

60 unique Ferraris

As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, Ferrari will build a series of 60 truly unique cars. These will be based on the 612 Scaglietti, the Prancing Horse's range-topping Granturismo which combines blistering performance and superb handling with superior comfort, sumptuous handcrafted trim, state-of-the-art accessories and meticulous attention to detail.

The cars will be offered with a two-tone livery in a combination of classic Ferrari colours as used on some of the Prancing Horse's most memorable models. The interior appointments will feature sophisticated colour combinations and a stunning new-generation electrochromic glass roof, itself a major innovation. The degree of opacity of the roof, in fact, can be adjusted to suit the occupants' requirements.
To underline the exclusivity of this series of one-offs, each example will also boast an enamelled symbol set on the central tunnel representing one of the 60 historic events chosen to celebrate the Marque's anniversary.
The result is a true collector's car aimed at Ferrari's most dedicated clients.

Why the hell had Maserati to ditch the gorgeous boomerang tailights?American legislation.
Really is a shame as those lights look absolutely amazing. Whenever I see a 3200 I always hope to see boomerang lights, but I'm nearly always disappointed :(

It really is a shame since the newer tailights look nowhere near as good as the originals, and certainly deprive the car of it's most distinctive feature. I hope that when the Coupe/Spyder are replaced Maserati will be allowed to be original again.

IIRC it was american opinions, not legislation, that put an end to the boomerangs...

It in fact has a twin turbo V8, IIRC this engine was first unveiled in the 1989 Shamal and powere a number of Maseratis, including the Quattroporte Ottocilindri, before being replaced by the current 4.2-litre normally apsirated V8 in the Coupe and the Spyder.
