Porsche 906 Carerra 6 was the very first purpose-built GT racing car developed and produced by Porsche company. Some may deny this statement so as Porsche 904 was the first Porsche GT car used for racing. On the the other hand 904 Porsche was approved for use on usual roads, on the contrary 906 was pure racing car.
It appeared in 1966 and the series of 50 was produced. In addition 13 more prototypes with different engines was completed later.
Porsche 906 Carrera 6 became a common view on raing tracks all over Europe and it appeared in the U.S.A., too, with many private pilots behind the steering wheel.

Two seater, the frame made of steel tubes, fibreglass body
Weight - 600 kg
Engine - Flat boxer, 6-cylinder with 1991 ccm displacement in mid position, driving rear wheels, bore x stroke - 80 x 66 mm
Trasmission - Four-speed, manual
Engine output - 220 HP / 8000 rpm
Top speed - 280 km/hour
Dunlop disk brakes

The images attached were taken during touring cars 6-hour race in Brno, 1967. It was driven by Swiss pilots Spoerry and Steinmann to win the race.

Very nice stuff, just a comment on the claim that this is the first racing porsche: Could be true for the two seaters, but certainly not for the Formula 1 raced in the fifties and the beginning of the sixties:)

What always strikes me at historics is how slow the 906s are compared to the Chevrons or the Ginettas. Probably the ones that are being campaigned are still in the state of 40 years ago, while the british cars are continuosly fitted with the latest stuff...

I'll put in some contemporary pictures.

To Henk4 - You are just on spot. I´ve missed to type two most important letters in the very first statetment - "GT" - they are there now.

Here is an example of a number that raced in the 2004 Tour Auto, which started in downtown Paris.

OK, you´re right.

They were pretty easy in those days and even Matra prototypes like the MS650 were given plates to run in events like the Tour de France or the Targa Florio.
