On some countries, Vento and Bora models are still called Jetta.
On some countries, Vento and Bora models are still called Jetta. Yes, like the United States, that's why I didn't go that far in years, if I do I'll just make separate thread Vento/Bora/Jetta.:)

And do you know why theykep0t the Jetta name over there? Because their market was not spoiled by the smokey diesel Jettas that were as bad as Morris Marinas. They only bought the petrol versions so they didn't realise how bad were some Jettas. ;)

I would not say that it's too popular here, most people look at it as a cheap BMW 3 series.

No, I'm pretty sure it's fairly popular. I read somewhere that the Jetta is Volkswagen's best-seller in the United States, as opposed to the Golf, which is the best-seller everywhere else.

The rear seats got very uncomfortable after sitting in them for more than one hour at a time. Much like economy-class airline seats...
Five people in the 105hp (?) base model... That was painstakingly slow.
Okay now that I think about it, the one I rode in wasn't a model anywhere between 1980 and 1992.

I like the Coupe version in post #11. In the U.S. the Jetta is kind of a cheap 3-series alternative but they aren't that cheap. If you have any sense you'd buck up and spend the extra to get the 3.
*Bora? Wasn't there a Maserati named Bora? Isn't that against some copyright reg?

You are correct. It was a coupe and spider in the late 60's-early 70's. Since Maserati did not renew their trademark rights, VW was free to use it.
If you have any sense you'd buck up and spend the extra to get the 3.

And most people do. I'm referring to the crowd bent on buying European. If you buy Euro, buy what they do best and not their interpretation of what the Japanese do best.
Actually VW has some interesting models, like the Golf TDi. But VW pricing is just a little off. Not expensive but never as affordable as their main competition. That explains their slow sales, atleast in the US.
First one is MK1 US spec.
