The Sullivan County Visitors Association and Rally New York, Ltd. have reached an agreement to pursue a bid for a future round of the World Rally Championship.

Rally New York is seeking approval to submit a bid to the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) to host a World Rally Championship here in the Sullivan County Catskills. The FIA is interested in expanding the World Rally series especially with a location in the United States. The observation year would be slated for early 2007 with the actual event held from 2008 on an annual basis.

Rally New York has already received approval from the Town Supervisors of the towns where the championship would be held and legislative approval from Sullivan County.

Sullivan County is to Manhattan like Kia is to Ferrari :) Regardless of the venue, having a WRC event in the states is really awesome.

Awesome, I've been there twice for SCCA Club Rally events, it's a nice venue. 4 of my father's friends raced last year, and I think his friend Walter won the Group N 'district'.:)

Only about 4 hrs from me IIRC.

Could this be the first ever oval stages on WRC events ? :D

Heads up now. There will be a public0bashign for anyone who complains about the sport and wants it changed for the US market, US spectators etc etc. We dont' care what the expectation is and no the sport should NOT change to accommodate. If a stage gets cancelled then suck it in and get on with life !!!!!!! oh and the FIA are in charge :D

They already tried this in eastern Tennessee, you can look up Cherokee Trails Rally. There was all this big talk about WRC scouts making an assessment of the course and surrounding infrastructure...it turned out to be a big failure moslty because spectators were so restricted in access to the course.

Hopefully this problem won't arise in New York....there is a lot of interest in the states in the sport but it's going to have to be open enough so you can go and see ample sections of the course without feeling like you are really not welcome.

NYC or NY State? I would kill to see an urban WRC in NY, but just imagine the havoc on traffic and re-adjusted routes.

Freakin' A!! That would be amazing! I could attend an F1 race and a WRC inside the US! Although I would still want to travel abroad to see each of those though.

You really should read through the topic before you ask about something that has already been answered.

i can't imagine any chance of a NYC related race. With recent first-hand experience driving from the northwest through PA and NY states to NYC, there's plenty of great rural/forested landscapes for a rally.

but enough about NYC, there's no chance of a race there. the logisitics of it all is insane.

I think it would increase the intrest of auto manufactures to participate. Which would keep the sport going.

And you heard this from where?

He has absolute knowledge of the American people, aerodynamics and many other things us mere mortals have no clue about. An explanation of his insights is rarely given.

If there was a WRC event in the US it would take about a year to gain popularity
