Any of the early Ferraries, perhaps the 250 GTO or the 275 GTB/4...

I would have to say either the Audi R8, Porsche 956, Porsche 917, or Aston Martin DBR9

Porsche 917.

The Porsche 917 was "acclaimed as the greatest racing car of all time in an expert poll conducted by Motor Sport Magazine in 1997"

See its history (http://home.earthlink.net/~chrisbnelson/nature/cars/917/porsche917.htm)

Sauber Mercedes C9 or the above.

Audi Quattro
Ford GT40
Ferrari F12001-04
Porsche 917 Can-Am
Big Bertha

There's five truly great race cars.

The DBR9 was faster than the C6R but it didn't have the reliability. There is a pretty good chance that a DBR9 will win GT1 class this year :D

Uh, no....it wasn't so good and it wasn't banned.....It did have reliability which is why it won, but it certainly was not the fast car that year...

917K (look at its record)
Ford GT40 (same again)
Audi R8 (saw it win twice at le mans[might see the R10 do it this year])
Mini Cooper (tin top and rally)
Audi Quattro (set the blueprint for modern wrc cars)
Ferrari 250 GTO (just look at it for a start)
MG Metro 6R4 (the sheer audacity of it)
Porsche 956/956B (four le mans wins on the trot to go with the other 12 wins)
Alfa Romeo 8C-2300 (same reason 4 le mans wins on the trot)
Jaguar D-Type (innovative for its time)

Its actually to hard to call. You could say so many like:
Lotus 78
Brabham Fan Car (so good it was banned lol)
Brabham BT52 (1000BHP per litre...and it handled too!)
Lotus 25 (first monocoque)
Lotus 33 (Using engine as fully stressed)
Porsche 917 (record)
Ford GT40 (as above)
Audi R8 (as above)
Audi R10 (IF its successful) (for the desil engine)
Mini Cooper S (so simple yet so good)
Audi Quattro (set new standards in rallying)
Toyota GT-One (inovative use of Vortex Lift)
Renault R25 (Speed & Reliability)
Ferrari F2002
Ferrari F2003-GA
Mclaren MP4/4

but which one do you choose...I guess it would have to be the one that would win a race between the lot of them. So..which 1 is it?

I rekon...hummmm...Renault R25...maybe...yes.

such a long list and still forgetting the Bugatti 35? The most winning car ever?

As everyone one else has said, the Audi R8 for its awesome reliability
LC/J Torana GTR XU-1 - for proving that bigger isn't always better
Torana A9X - Cause you can race it, one arm out the window, and set a lap record on the last lap
Holden VT/X V8 Supercars - just because they were so dominant until the introduction of the BA Falcon

for the best oldie I would have to say the Mazda 787B it is the only japanese car to win at Le Mans and it did it with the coolest engine. A four rotor Wankel!!!

for the new racing cars I would have to say the NISMO tuned Skylines that won everything and were the reason that JGTC was started in 1993!
