Is the DVD-ROM on the same cable as your hard drive?

If it is on the same cable you may have the jumpers incorrectly set on your hard drive and it's trying to boot from your dvd-rom drive.

If you tell me more I can probably help. Is it an external or internal dvd drive?

Maybe you set up the new DVD-rom as a slave drive, and perhaps setting it as the master may do the trick. 90% sure it's a wiring problem here, or, you have a floppy in your computer that you should remove.

Is it serial or "classic" ATA connection ?
If parallel (classic) then make sure the pin 1 marker on the cable ( usually the edge marked with red line ) is next to the power connector on the drive. "Cheap" cables seldom have the key to prevent cabling them the wrong way round.
Check the Master/Slave jumper is in the correct places. Either in the Cable Select position for both, or one in Master the other in Slave. There will be label on the drive or punched on the rear panel of the drive where the jumper should go.

If its connected to the same cable as the HD, try attatching them to seperate cables. This will also make the HD transfer data faster in some cases.

If thats not the problem, Matra's post.

IF all the jumpers are OK, then it might JUST be the PSU, what rating is it and have you checked that the sum of all the parts doesnt' exceed it ?

THEN, you are into troubleshooting :)
First, remove the OLD drive and leave the new one in and reboot.
That will (hopfeully) prove the new drive is not broke !!

Then try the old drive on it's own on the OTHER connecter of the cable. That way you've removed the chance of a cable fault.

If still not working then, remove the Nero software if you have it - there used to be issues with Nero.

If that didnt' make a difference then, remove ALL the CD/DVD drivers and reboot. Let it re-install drivers as required and make SURE you use drivers supplied with the components if any.

If none of those and still stuck then you are now in Windows lah-lah land and time to re-isntall Windos from scratch :( BEFORE you do that though TRIPLE check the jumpers, cables and drivers :D
