there are actually quite a few good entries this week if you apply the civic rule

I am having some problems with Johnnynumfy's pic. Not that it is not a good one, but I am just wondering whether colours have not been manipulated beyond the rules to get the period effect. The Chaparral is of course white but the Maserati in reality looks like this.

Ver difficult. Racingmaniac has pulled off a very difficult shot, as well as henk. I think I'll go henk-it's a photo style that I've never seen before.

Henk, did you plan the shot with the car and riders, or do you regularly stand in the ditch on the side of the road with your camera out?

I stood there for about 1.5 hours in the burning sun.

because i took the pic while on assignment for UCP, and it may be used in the UCP database in the future, so it's copyrighted UCP.

I would have to say that henk is getting very lucky this comp...In my personal opinion, your picture is terrbile, nothing special about it at all. No offense, I've liked your picture's before, but this one is not good at all.

Yes it was. I guess he was betrayed by his equipment. With a decent camera that would be a perfect shot. At list it demands more skills than shooting a standing F430.

I see you voted for a standing Viper on a pic that in my opinion would be much better without any car at all. Obviously tastes differ:)

Judging from your vote it's a matter of taste then. It looks like the Civic rule is not applied by you.

when im vote for best pic, i consider colors, cars, angle's, everything same as you. What i don't like about your picture is how far away the car is ( cant really see it)...and how all the attention is focused on some random bike rider

no need for anyone else to defend him, i am not attacking him, its called contructive criticism;)

and as far as standing vs moving pics go, you cant say all moving pics are better than standing, or that standing takes no talent at all. I would go as far as saying taking a picture takes no "talent" at all. Almost every signle person in this world has the ability to see a car, point and shoot.

It's an excellent photo, and I probably would've voted for it if it didn't break the rules (it was taken too long ago to be an entry). Sorry Rob :)

Not all people can take a good picture of cars in movement. Almost everyone with a decent camera can take a gorgeous pic of a standing car.

Pieter pic has a special significance. Read the story about how that event got to be named Tour Auto. ;)

The only thing I think it's worth of criticism is the focus. But that was camera's fault...:(

correct me if i'm wrong, but i seem to remember reading about this special competition allowing any photo from 2005, hence Henk's shot as well.

edit: i just noticed that Henk's shot didn't have his date listed. it was actually taken April 30, 2005 (Tour Auto) as per the photo properties

I like the B&W pic, IMO if that were a film camera shot it would not have been seen as any violation at all....it looks almost like a peek to the past...

my shot imo is too dark...white color car messes with my camera's metering...

The urgency in RacingManiac's pic makes you feel if you blink the car will be gone. Great picture!!

Henk's is also super nice. If I'd been waiting for a hour+ standing in a ditch and a cyclist came in the frame, I'd be pretty miffed. But he used the cyclists to compose very nicely.

Saturn pic is nice, if only it wasn't a Saturn.

OK, well, my shot can be blamed on the slowness of the Sony camera that I used. I had been standing in that ditch for an hour to take all participants in the final stage of the Tour Auto, because I thought it was a vantage point, getting the snow covered mountains in the background. The road went steeply up, I think about 10% at that point, and cars were really having trouble there to keep the cooling water at bay. In the background you can see a small parking place, where more than one car had to stop.

When I saw Jose Albuquerques Ferrari coming up I noted that two bikers came straight from behind me and I assumed that they might spoil the picture. I let the first one pass and engaged the shutter, assuming that it would respond immediately. I hoped to have been able to take a shot of car with second biker not visible. When I then finally saw the picture again there he was. So there was no intended composition and it was sheer luck. Nevertheless not taking into account all its imperfections, (it is difficult to get the bike in focus even when you try, as it was passing me at two meters distance, doing about 60 kph) I think it is one of the best shots I ever took, certainly taking into account the Tour de France/Tour Auto history, and also knowing that this particular mountain is a regular part of the annual bike tour. There is a story to be told with this picture, and for that purpose it is OK.

For those who want to see a bigger shot of the Ferrari, here it is, and that surely would not have been a winning shot.

Im a bit disappointed that I wasnt able to enter the week 50 event. I was stuck on a small island away from my hd. and without internet access to enter but I have to say that amoungst the flock on entries 2 stood out. the Saturn and the Racingmaniac shot. I believe that Henks picture wouldnt of passed the civic rule. The Saturn wouldve won if it was anything close to an exotic or an antique. Racingmaniacs shot like stated before gives a feeling of urgency like itll be gone if you blink. I wouldve entered this shot if I had the chance because its got a story to tell imohttp://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=142308&d=1130114273

Yeah I was praying for a Civic and then this bloody Ferrari entered into view. Howeveer as there were about 20 GTBs participating in the Tour Auto, it could be considered as the Civic of this year's event. :D

Which exactly IS this civic rule that everyone goes on about?

too many pics are being valued on the car itself. Look for instance at the Pantera in this competition. If that would have been a Civic, nobody would have taken notice. Actually I think that the picture that RoX would have submitted, (but could not) is a perfect case of the civic rule. If the Edwardian car in the picture would be replaced by a Civic, nobody would pay attention, because it is just another intersection.

I agree that I wouldnt of passed the civic rule, but Imo just as yours with the GTB tells a story this one does too. The only thing that stopped me from liking yours was the blurriness but its still well composed. Ill just have to wait till I get back into the flow of things to show you how my technique has changed, (hopefully for the better).

btw I believe Im one of the reasons why the civic rule was introduced. Before the days of my canon my 3.2mp powershot killed alot of the pictures i took.

As explained in post 33 here, the picture really was a fluke, so nothing about deliberate composition, but I am still proud of the result:)
