that looks a bit questionable whether it's been 'shopped. how did you create the black shades in the corners?

One too many filters? I've gotten that when I screw in two filters and don't zoom beyond the filter housing in the corners. Also, possibly cropped top left of a larger pic.

no problem. it was a great shot nonetheless, and the shading looks great, but we're trying to keep the contest to untouched photographic abilities alone, except for cropping of course. We have a Photoshop forum over here http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=27 if you're interested.

Welcome to UCP by the way.

i can recall a a few comps ago (when drakkie still ran this comp) there was a guy who entered a pic of an F430, i asked Drakkie if this was ok and guess what his anwer was.... he sad that its okay since the rules doesnt state anything about not allowing pics of cars.

I'll let Cotterik be judge. I know it's not good enough to win the comp anyway. I just thought i'd enter.

true,

i find that a GENERAL photography competition can have all sorts of pictues, as long as they are not of "adult" material. Therefor i have no problem with it.You are likely to get less votes though.... I will let Cotterik decide on this, but this is just what I think is right.

Well seeing as I run both the general and the automotive photo comps. I'd say that I run each competition separately because theres a distinct difference between what each competition usually requires as an entry. I.E the automotive comp consists of cars, obviously. The general photo competition is usually a step aside of that and usually consists of everything and anything other than automotive material. Although the rules do not specifically say that automotive material is not allowed, I think its fair to say that car photography should stay loyal to the automotive competition. Just becase its alot more practical that way. Otherwise we might end up with two very similar competitions.

Frogfish are from the Anglerfish family, they wait for unsuspecting prey to stumble by and whack! These fish aren't fast enough to chase prey or to run away from predators so they just try to blend.

In my case, I photographed an exhibit that's recreating the deep coral reefs. There were no light sources outside just a glow in the tank. So I shot the Frogfish without flash while being very still for about 3 seconds.

I'm looking at the same one, black body with 18-55 lens, since it's the cheapest. It's a bit more than the one you linked to but I can't buy from the intenet... maybe I'll get lucky in the Jan sales. :) The next thing I'll get is probably a better lens for it.

ah yes I'm considering the jessops deal too as It saves having to get it from the net, and as you said if i wait until january sales when my birthday is, i may be able to get it a bit cheaper. Soon afterwards ill save up for the 18-200 lens adapter. Although i think the 18-55 will do me pretty good for the time being. I plan to start spending all my money on my 350D once its mine heh.

You have the Sony DSC-S90 right? It's increasingly hard to find suppliers for lens adapters for that range. However i recommend searching your way through the world of google, and see if you can find yourself a VAD-PEB Lens Adapter. This lets you use a few upgrades to your lens including the VCL-DH2630 Telephoto Converter which I'd recommend the most. The only down side is that they dont come cheap. A quick search gave me this price list: http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/sony_dsc_s90.htm and an individual price: http://www.electronics-online.co.uk/acatalog/Sony_VCL_DH2630_Lens.html But anyway as i was saying I'd recommend the VCL-DH2630 as the best upgrade for your camera. I'm not too experienced with the Sony camera range myself but thats what I would do if i were in your position.

Lol, my bday is in January too. Jacobs is generally either cheaper than Jessops, or they have some type of special offer on, so keep your eye on them as well. I'm not sure what lens I'll go after but I'm thinking along the lines of 75-300 for track shots, or a good macro lens. Too early to make up my mint right now. But yeah, once I have it all my money is going into the camera too. ;)

Hey, I'm 17 days older than you :p How ironic it is that we currently both own the same camera, are the same age, and are looking to buy the exact same camera once again at the exact same time  good luck to us both then! be sure to tell me how it goes.

I think the 20D is worth the extra money. I'll see, if it means waiting an extra month or so I might just go for it.

I had a go with a D50 but I didn't really like the feel of the camera. And the guy I spoke to said the only reason he would go for it is if he wanted to save money. And I'm Canon biased. :p

RacingManiac
11-28-2005, 11:06 AM
Meh, IMO the only reason to be biased is if you have already some lenses that'll work on the camera, and you can save money that way. But for someone starting from scratch as I was, I'd just pick the one that I feel will do the most for me. The difference in this class is so small that whichever one will be excellent....provided that you get decent lens for them. And all kit-lens are usually crap compare to what you will endup buying....I bought my Minolta 5D 3 months ago and I've already got 3 other lenses now that I stopped using my kit-lens...(and from what I've heard 350D's kit lens is worse)....

Why double up? Why not apply a little logic, broaden your perspective (Or narrow it, as the case may be :)) and get the 75-300? You'll quickly appreciate the extra length just as much as you'll appreciate just how wide 18mm is (Until you try an 18mm on a film SLR or a 1:1 DSLR).

And just 'lens' is fine. Nobody's impressed with the redundant 'adaptor'. Just a heads up. :)

Pinin
11-28-2005, 11:48 AM
Well I tried four cameras today. I didn't like the D50 at all, it felt weird and I wasn't comfortable with it. The other one (forgot name), wasn't very good either. I didn't like the position of the controls on it. The 350D was very good but it is a little light, though that's not a big problem for me. So that leaves the 20D, the weight, feel and size of it were perfect. It has some better features than the 350D which I liked too. The lens kit isn't great but I could still use it and get some good photos while I save up for a better lens. It isn't THAT bad..

I asked about a 200mm lens too, the guy found me one for £3000.

EF series L lens eh....f2?

Its probably white too....

Any factory lens thats white(Minolta/Nikon) or cream white(Canon) is gonna cost pretty penny...

No idea, he mentioned it was a Prima lens, or something. Are the white ones worth the money they cost?

a few insignificant remarks from my experience:

honestly i was biased with Canon seeing as Wouter was already using Canon, but he's proven to us all that it gives great results. I've only popped a couple shots with other brands, so i can't truely compare on brands. one item of advice that i've learned and will pass on is the importance of lens quality. the Canon USM 70-200 F2.8 L lens i just started using is a very powerful lens and can be compared several ways with others. the brand will make a difference in outcome as well as price but there's also apertures to consider. i could get the 70-200 F4 for half the price of this F2.8, but those few F-stops make a huge difference.

I was originally considering to buy a Rebel and start building up my lens collection, since they seemed more expensive than the bodies, and i knew i could use the lenses on a 20D or even the new 5D now. then my brother-in-law (who's a pro-photographer) bought a 20D to have in his bag for mobile stuff, and after a few weeks decided it wasn't enough for him. that then presented a great opportunity to buy it from him. so that's what brought me to own a 20D with 17-85mm IS lens, and added the 200mm recently.

so hey, buy a Rebel, and some good lenses, then upgrade the body later.

the 20D also supports IS (image stabilization,) so when looking at long lenses some will be with or without IS. I suspect the 200mm lens he quoted was a F2.8 with IS.

I am weighing my option to see if I want to get my first "white" lens in the next 12 month. I am looking to buy a Minolta 300mm f4 APO lens and the price comparatively is decent at ~ $1000 USD. This will be my primary outdoor lens for shooting racing stuff, with the crop factor it'll give me about 450mm reach, compare to my current 305mm from my 210mm lens. One thing I like about the APS-C sized DSLR is the extra reach as I do very little wide angle stuff. If I can find $2000 laying around somewhere I'd want to get the 70-200mm f2.8 lens, which is Minolta' equivelent to the Canon you've mentioned....as the 2 main KM DSLR came with Image Stablization built-in, I don't need to spend the extra for a IS lens...which is a plus I guess...it is quite useful in low light...

Canon certainly has its perks, as you are more likely to find someone who you can go and borrow your lens from...

I too have decided to upgrade my plans to purchase a canon 350D to a 20D also. For sheer build and to aid my plunge into the world of semi-professional photography i Feel its always better to go for the camera you would realy want. Plus, for anyone looking at buying one. Canon are giving £100 cashback on anyone who buys one before the 31st January 2006. There the deal with the body + the 18-55 lens would only be £800. Quite a bargain i think. That is, if i dont purchase it second hand off my dads friend.

BTW 20D is a camera that would've been high up on my list if I had the money....but I certainly don't regret getting the Minolta at the end. Rebel XT really turned me off with the built and the lack of heft...

No idea, he mentioned it was a Prima lens, or something. Are the white ones worth the money they cost? That would be a prime lens. That just means it's not a zoom lens. I'm not sure where the prime bit comes from. I'd have thought that 'fixed length' or something similar would be a bit more obvious.

I have a friend that has the Nikon equivalent that Canon lens AAA-mod mentioned, the 80-200 F2.8, he lets me borrow it from time to time, it's a stunning bit of kit. Just a bit too heavy for using for long periods of time! :(

31st January? I was sure that offer ended on the 31st of December this year, are you sure?
