I almost regret posting this, as I don't like spamming (if I could delete all the posts I made as a junior member I would) and I don't like being called a spammer, but I really find it interesting.

another testament to the dumbing down of science and engineering in schools :(

Not your fault, blame the idiots who run school systems who haven't a clue about the depth of science !!

I'm sadder, I only "memorised" it to 3.14159 as being sufficiently accurate for anything I'd ever want to use it for :D Pragmatist :D

In math class, we had a wall of around 2.2 by 6 meters, which was covered by PI in the numbers of around 5mm high

According to the second link, Pi day is on the 14th of March at 1:59PM. Why?
Pi=3.14159
(3.) March is the third month of the year (14) 12th of March (159) the time. The date and time are taken from the first few digits of Pi!
Lol my friend figured that out. I showed them all, I'm so proud of how much Pi I have. :D
Yesterday I was doing a quiz for a friend, and I decided to answer with Pi. I decided 3.1415926 was too short so I went in search of a little more. I found 974 digits. :D Today I searched more and now I have 1,000,040 digits, as seen here.

i agree with matra that schools just teach what pi is not what it means.

It's easy with computers :)
Back in the 15 century a Persian scholar worked PI out to 15 decimal places. To do it he had to estimate by using a polygon with over 800 MILLION SIDES. Pretty impressive with no calculator and limited paper :D

The "record" used to be 51 BILLION digits by two japanese mathemeticians in the late 90s.

Some GREAT trivia :) ( sorry guys, I'm sure there was stupidiy in all our nations, but this is the only one I got sent :D )

In 1897 a state House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill setting pi equal to 16/(sqrt 3), which approximately equals 9.2376. In which state of the United States did this occur?

A. California
B. Indiana
C. Massachusetts
D. Florida
E. Canada

Besides, the number was KNOWN to be approximately 3.1-3.2 for roughly THREE AND HALF THOUSAND YEARS !!!!!

ours is covered with autographs and names of students and sometimes dates. the first autograph is from 1968 !!!! :) on spme of the older tables on our school, there still is stuff like Peace '76 and the peace sign :D I guess we need to modernize soon :p

edit:
at chemistry there are all results from FC Twente from 1987 on the wall :) Guess what he teacher is fan off :)

SuperPI (http://www.geocities.com/hjsmithh/Pi/Super_Pi.html) now you too can find Pi to 33Million decimal places :)
Intersting to note, the site says it takes ~3days for an old Pentium 90, a modern desktop can do it in 20 to 30 minutes. Thats progress :)
I remember reading a Usenet post where a guy was astonished at how fast modern systems can compute Pi, he used to have to set aside days on a supercomputer to get it to 1million decimal places. Last time I did it it took 45seconds

Though in my math book it states that pi was calculated to a million digits.

im a little fuzy on the details but my calc professor told us some guy (australian?) calculated Pi to a couple hundred thousand digits or so several hundred years ago and no one knew how to check if he was right or not until fairly recently and they figured out he set and did it all by hand because after like 100,000 digits he got off one and everything after that was wrong. that would just suck.

Matra et Alpine
12-09-2005, 01:41 PM
Yeah, William Shanks (he was English) had it to 800+ digits in the 1800s and then a guy uses a desktop calculator in 1940s to show he got it wrong from about 500 onwards !!

Is there a pattern that emerges or is it random?

Matra et Alpine
12-09-2005, 02:01 PM
PI is an "irrational number" and so there are no repeating patterns - which is why some people love doing it to large numbers of digits. If you found a "pattern" you'd be world famous :D
http://www.mcs.csuhayward.edu/~malek/Mathlinks/pi.gif

Somewhere there is a group of 5 or 6 9s IIRC :D

isnt it something like 3 1/7?
erm as an approximation that is less accurate than the value worked out 3000 years ago that's fine. .... "Mr Bush, sir, we have another candicdate for our intelligence service, sir, will I recruit him ? "

It wasn't personal.
you can't help it that the education system has devalued anything complicated and has dumbed it all down so that more people can go to college etc etc :(

3 1/7 = 3.142857 (repeating)
yeah we can all divide 7 into 1 :D
hence why it was pointed out how inaccurate it is relative to the currently known value.
As stated, it's fine as an approximation as was stated earlier by Torubillon.
( I'm hoping that 22/7 = 3 1/7 is known :D )

Pi is the circumfrance of a circle divided by the diameter. The ancient greeks were the first to figure it out I believe.
