you live in cali and you needed someone to tell you that? :D

if you didnt know thats what it was, what did you mean by "the big one"?

I meant that my friend felt it too and his call confirmed it.

I donno if it is foreshadowing the big one.

Where are you in California? I'm south of the LA fault-line but with the big one I don't think it'll matter. :(

oh.

smaller quakes release the pressure built up by the plates sliding against each other. no expert, but it seems like many small ones are a good thing.

Know your seismic facts. Living in that 'vulnerable' an area, you should at least know a bit. I don't know why you didn't immeaditely think it to be an earthquake.

San Francisco isn't due for another 'Big One' for another 60 or 70 years. You should know better than I that San Francisco get minour trembles every so often, not big enough to do damage, just enough to be felt or knock stuff from the walls. You probably felt a 3.0 or so. The seismic measurements, according to the richter scale, increase exponentially. Thus, a 7.0 is 10x stronger than a 6. '89 was a 7.8, I believe.

If, by referring to 'the Big One,' you mean the one that will send California uner the sea, it's a bunch of bollocks. The Pacific Plate moves North and the N. American plate stays (relatively) in place. California will NOT tumble into the sea. Earthquakes are means of relieving the pressure built up in the faults, in 1906 the Pacific plate moved about 3 ft. North. I thinki in '89 it was 1 foot or so...

Pets as good natural disaster detectors is just a wive's tale.

So long as you live in a fairly modern house built up to codes following the '89 quake, you should be in good condition.

There is only a very small chance that the quake you felt is a foreshock to a larger quake.

But there's still a chance.

It depends on what part of San Francisco. The last large quake on the Hayward fault was an estimated 6.8 magnitude in 1868. That would be in the Oakland/Berkeley area. The last large quake adjacent to San Francisco was the 1906 quake (7.8 on the updated moment magnitude/8.2 on the Richter scale); the 1989 quake 7.0 quake was quite some distance from S.F.

Yeah, ridiculous that California will "fall into the sea" when 86% of the coastline is rising.
The maximum horizontal movement in the 1906 quake was 20 feet near Point Reyes.

You could ask someone who lives in San Francisco.

Yes, there are occasional shocks, but nothing major. However, certain parts of the city are screwed, such as the Marina, which was literally built on landfill.

Fleet 500
12-23-2006, 12:47 AM
Yeah, always a lot of damage in the Marina District in a big quake.

We had a small earthquake in my area two weeks back. It happened around 3am, and I didn't notice it because I was sleeping like a rock. My folks said that it shook them up pretty good though.

Alameda would be even worse than Marina in this case......

Guess what? Hollywood be at Alaska in a million years!!! :D

Do you have earthquake insurance on that $500,000 compy of yours?

IBrake4Rainbows

Pets have been shown, through studies, to have a sensory perception of imminent disaster - thats why Birds leave areas, for example, before inclement weather.

Hopefully the earthquakes are just small releases of pressure - it's better to have a few small ones than one big one :)

What are you talking about? My PC costs less than yours. It's not my fault that you paid twice as much as my Opteron for your X2 4200+.

That was the 3500+ over a year ago and it was one of the most bang for the buck CPUs at the time!! Oh well at least my $150 Opteron 165 makes your $300 X2 4200+ cry. :D

If you added in all the hours you spend overclocking and monkeying around with it, the labor added would make your compy cost $8,000.:D

Actually, that will take around 50 million years. It will take Hollywood about 15 million years to reach San Francisco (or what's left of San Francisco).
