in my lotus elise and R-X8.... i have modded the engines/everything else that the car and engine has become too fast for the gearbox...i'll achive past redline revv's in top gear..... should i fiddle with the gear ratios? bigger or smaller

It says it right on the screen, top speed - acceleration.

Making the ratio numerically higher, it will make it accelerate faster and go through the gears quicker, aka, a close ratio gear box.

Making the ratio numerically lower, it will make top speed greater and it will go through the gears slower, aka a long gear box.

So you would want to lower your gear ratios.

You have the problem with many low-end cars modded up, take johnnynumfiv advice, it's the best idea..

You could just lengthen the last gear

lenghtening the last gear would make the car shift down to a very low rpm. And speed would never be reached, not fast anyway. Tune the car to the track you are racing. Either for speed, or accel. Depending on turns, straights, etc. Take johnnys advice. As he explains it the best.
