British GT regular Damax is to make the step up to the FIA GT Championship's new GT3 category with a pair of 'works' Ascari GT3s, with backing from RF equipment supplier Gigawave.

The team has raced in the British championship for the past two seasons, but boss Robin Ward is delighted to be making the step up, having been eyeing the international scene for some time.

"We have been looking for a way into the FIA GT Championship for some time now, and this association with Ascari gives us the perfect opportunity," he explained, "We are all looking forward to working with Ascari and I am confident we can achieve great results with this car."

This European GT3 Championship will run as a stand-alone series supporting the FIA GT Championship, but has already attracted the support of Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Dodge, Corvette, Lotus and Maserati, all of whom expect to field cars run by privateer teams, as per the regulations. Ascari, which launched its first self-built supercar a couple of years ago, is the latest to join the auspicious list.

Leading the Damax driver line-up will be Nick Adams and Aaron Scott, while the team is already in talks with a number of other drivers interested in joining the series. The second pairing is expected to be confirmed after testing in the next few weeks.

The cars are expected to complete their first outing at the end of January, before moving onto the official FIA tests, where the performance of all machines entered into the category will be equalised to provide as close a competition as possible at the five double-header rounds at Silverstone, Oschersleben, Spa, Magny-Cours and Imola
