View Full Version : Best sounding car?

What is the best sounding car that you have ever heard? I would have to say the Panoz LMP race car. The Panoz is the loudest thing on earth!

Either a 2003 Corvette Lingenfelter Stage 4, or a 1967 Corvette 427. Both the same day, last year at Corvettes at Carlisle. The 67 could be heard across the fairgrounds, which are probably a half to 3/4 mile wide...

Useless fact of the day: An Alfa Romeo engine when at high revs sounds much unlike a Ferrari when it screams.

Hate to be rude, but it's an electric "motor" ;)

No such thing as an electric engine. An engine is defined as a device for changing fuel energy into mechanical energy.

The only real decent cars you ever hear in New Zealand are just Falcon XR8's and Commodore SS's, unless you live in Auckland or Wellington. Personally, I love the sound of the old Windsor v8 they used to have in the Falcons, although I've heard an old Pontiac Trans Am start up and that is an incredible sound. Also a person I know has a very old (1970's era) Ford Capri with a V8. It happens to pick someone up from my school and you can hear waay before you can see it which is quite funny..

fpv_gtho

ive heard AU windsors (my dad owns one) XR6T's and BAXR8's and can safely say the BA 8 sound the best. the BOSS engine retains the bellowing at idle the windsor has but doesnt get raspy higher in the rev range like the buick V6 in the commodore does.....

Ferrari 250 and 330-series V12 engines are super-sweet sounding. E46 M3's, Tadek Marek-designed Aston straight sixes, and the Maserati 3500 are also great. I also really enjoy the pounding of an American big block six. Aside from that, the old 200ci Ford flathead fours (yes, the ones in model T's and B's) can be made to have a neat-o sound, and of course I love a Ford Flathead V8. Lastly, I think that most VW 4-cylinders are not bad sounding at all.

Oh, and I almost forgot. There's a video on YouTube of a guy running a supercharged Packard inline 8 in his hot rod. Great sounding car.

An American big-block six? Did you mean to say an American big-block V-8? I've never heard am American 6-cylinder that sounds as good as a Mopar 426-Hemi or 427 Ford or Chevy.

jcp123

Yeah, the big block sixes...Chevy 292 and Ford 300. GMC had a nice 302ci inliner in the 50s, nearly impossible to find now. Chrysler had some hemi-headed slant sixes in Australia too, IIRC in displacements up to 265ci. Horsepower hung around 1/ci as well on those, and the blokes down under have, of course, put out some further speed goodies for the Hemi /6's.

Just watched some more videos featuring the Colombo V12s. Definitely beautiful sounding motors. To my mind the automotive equivalent of an Omega Speedmaster. FAR better than anything the modern sportscar guys are putting out. And they were still 7k rpm motors.

Excellent choice! Staying on this theme, a beglasspacked Flathead is among my favorite noises.

Back to your video, though. I remember seeing this somewhere on the net a while back; it's good to see someone in the hotrod community doing something different. While the current low and ratty trend is much more visually appealing than the horrible dayglo Chip-Foose awfulness of the '90s, I feel like the scene is stagnating. It's becoming formulaic, and really, no one's impressed by a small block Chev in a deuce. Also, I don't like airbags (the suspension), which are becoming a lot more popular. If you want to customize a car, why do the exact same thing as everyone else? That said, I like flatties because they have period charm that most more-modern engines do not.

I think it'd have been cool if rather than switching to a V8 in '55, Packard had made an OHV inliner.

I agree. One reason I love a good straight six or straight 8 in one. Even a Ford flattie 8, good as it sounds, is almost as run out as an SBC. I fantasize about one of the Aussie hemi Mopar sixes or a Ferrari Colombo v12 (a combo I have seen at Steve Moal's shop in California before) also for this reason. The old school rods should be a vessel for personalization, not another mainstream to join.

Hell, be a little bit original and at least run a y-block v8 or one of those great running Lincoln 430" units...unique would be one of the GM 215ci V8s they sold to Rover. Aw I could go all day on the subject. Many more motors and transmissions have bounced around in my head. But you already know what I mean.

I've seen everything from lincoln v12s, a couple ferrari v12s (Hot Rod published one in the 60s!), rover v8s, sixes of all kinds, four bangers are so old they predate the title hot rod. I've yet to see a five banger in a rod. I've seen viper swaps. I have seen FWD hot rods which were basically an Olds Toronado front end. I've seen Rear engined rods with tornado front ends inverted. I could go on and on. the engines themselves are only one part of the customization. You could have some engine right out of butt**** nowhere in your rod, but what makes a rod truly unique is dozens upon dozens of customizations...

I just sort of got around to it, but that Indian looks really primitive! It even has pedals. Still sounds nice though. But the way the flames shoot out reminds me of that Brutus thing. I don't even think that Indian bike has a gearbox- the Indians I've seen all have a hand shift gear knob thing.

The Harley I didn't expect at all. Sounds real good.

The Brutus!

Boardtrack racers were among the first racing bikes. They were simply the pacing bikes with the biggest v twins of the time. The racing was crazy. They had no brakes, you stopped by either killing the ignition or retarding it. The throttle was set for WOT at all times.

No. There was a famous one, I think an American company did it. It was white.

While, as an owner, I love the sound of my Ford GT with it's Ford Racing Rear Exit Headers, I must confess that my first experiences in the 1950s listening to the various cars at the road races set two cars above all - and still do today.

For high pitch beauty, I still thrill to the Ferrari Colombo engine in the 250 Testa Rossa (circa 1957-1961).

And, for low frequency guttural levels (a la the Cobra 427), I would choose the Maserati 450S, powered by Alberto Bellentani and Guido Taddeucci's 4-cam 4.5 liter V8.

Colombo V12s are also a go-to for me when I need some sonic sex. It's honestly pretty hard to top. But, I do like the flat rumble of a small block Chevy...an engine I'd never own just because it's so cliche. Flathead V8s are good too. And for an oddball choice...Detroit Diesel 2-stroke heavy duty engines.

Any large Ford V8 sounds good, but the 351 Cleveland pushing through headers and the short mufflers on a De Tomaso Pantera is still to this day one of the best, meanest sounding engines I've ever heard. Although I think an argument could be made for the Jaguar F-type R or SVR, truly incredible sound.
