The Geneva droptop rush shows no sign of abating. Yesterday Alfa Romeo released the first official images of its Spider, to be launched at the Swiss show. Today it’s Opel’s turn, for these are the first proper shots of the GT, its two-seater model.

Based on the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, the new car will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing around 260bhp. Opel is promising 0-62mph in ‘less than six seconds’ and a top speed of over 140mph.

The GT will be built in GM’s Delaware plant in the USA (alongside the Sky and Solstice) but there’s no word yet on whether Vauxhall will be importing its own version. If it does decide to bring the stylish GT to the UK, expect it to be left-hand drive only.

It's not a bad car but it's not faithful to the heritage of the Opel GT. They should have named it something else.

At first glance its got too much in common with the Speedster IMO. Same basic looks, same performance so i dont know if it'll have enough appeal.

i like the look of these, and what's better, this might force or hurry mazda along in making a new MX-5 Turbo/MPS/SE

Solstice is 2850 lbs
MX-5 is 2400 lbs
Speedster is 2100lbs

Unless they do some SERIOUS weight reduction on the Solstice platform it wont' be anythign special. Nice badge :D

Building a "GT" off of the bulki Solstice platform is insane.
The original GT was a light(ish) perfromance sports car.

Those lookign for sportscars will still likely go for the lighter MX-5 with better handling and dynamics.

Shame US legislation wouldnt' let a proper GT be built on the Speedster platform :D

I like the opel eco speedster alot. I wish it was available in the US to buy, as opposed to a concept car here, and reality in Germany and Europe.

Wow, more platform engineering. *Yawn* GM just doesn't get it... No one will need 3 versions of the same damn car with different badges so why build them?!?! No wonder why they have no business.

Good point the original GT was a hard top !!
Take the different Speedster chassis and make their own hardtop version - just like the exige.
Best idea :D

its not that bad an idea, this Opel one will be sold in Europe, and from what i gather, the Solstice is positioned below the Sky in the market

Aren't they making another one for Saab as well? That's 4 cars off the same platform. They're also planning one with a V-6 for Chevrolet and a V-8 musclecar .

Exactly why call this car an Opel "GT"?? Call it anything; Opel Wango, Tango, Stingray, Sky, but not GT.

Opel GT...
