My older brother has just ordered for his wife a Focus XR5, cant find too much about them on the Ford webiste in Aust, The UK website spec say it has a 166kw. He wanted to get the XR6 Turbo, but the wifey wanted a smaller car so has to compromise. Cant wait to take it for a fang.;)

Apparently theyre coming in at $35,990, cheaper than the ST170 by about a grand which is pretty good considering the stiffer new chassis and more powerful Volvo engine.

Im pretty sure the ST/XR5T's out of Europe as opposed to South Africa where the rest of our range comes from.

I think its May they go on sale, so Ford should be updating everything pretty soon coinciding with the Melbourne Motor Show

Yeah, he gets it in May sometime, havent found out about 1\4 mile or 0-100 times, but with 166kw it certainly wont be slow.

So is this the same as the european Focus ST?

Is it really called XR5 in oz? That would be so much cooler than ST.

Though my nostalgia bone is telling me it really should be called XR3. :)

Shouldn't it be the XR5 = 5 dr and the XR3 is the 3 dr? That's that way it is over here at least, we have a 3 and a 5 door name for each individual car. Anyway, I like the new focus and I really hope we do get a n Rs version this year, it would be great competition for Scoob and Mitsu considering how well Ford is doing in wrc right now ( GO BOSSE!!!).

The 5 stands for 5 cylinders don't it?

It was all based on position in teh Ford model range originally.

SO
the Fiesta version was the XR2
the Escort version was the XR3
and teh Sierra version was the XR4

yeah the Ford Fiesta XR2 was a two cylinder engine and the Escort XR3 was a three cylinder engine ------- NOT.

Ser post above explaining the original naming.

IIRC it was the South Africans and Austrlians who screwed the numbering and then made an XR6 and an XR8 for a 6 and 8 engine respectively. They don't rule the world ( only the spam and kelly :D )

you mean Holden factory, or HSV? It isn't really a true HSV rival because of the price and power difference, though, if Holden does release a factory turbo astra, then yes, it would be the natural competitor.

the SRi turbo is coming soon, its been on the Holden site for a while, but i don't know any specs for it, though I imagine the focus will be better

Probably, but its closer to the Golf GTi than anything i think

Here it does, and if we decide to take the Fiesta ST they'll probably call that an XR4. As long as we've got the XR6, XR6T and XR8, thats the best way to ensure the cars success. The issue seems to be split amongst the UK members :p

WHat's going to be fun is if you guys get the Fiesta AND the Focus ST.
Do they BOTH get called XR4 ? Or do they never offer the 4-potter Focus ST :)
As you say XR5 makes sense for the nomenclature you guys used and no doubt will be used worldwide. Ford would be crazy NOT to sell that car in teh UK :D

PS: Side note did you guys ever get the Fiesta XR2 and Escort XR3 ????

Doesnt everyone get the car with the Volvo engine? The Mk1 ST was the ST170 with the Duratec engine, and it was criticized locally for being too expensive ($AUD37K) and underpowered for its handling. Now the new one theyve called it the XR5T because of its turbo 5 cylinder, subsequently it has 39kw more and is $AUD1010 cheaper.

We never got the old Fiesta's and our better Escort's were the RS1800's and RS2000's.

The Fiesta is still a relative newbie in australian parts, and unless Ford wants to go head to head with the VW Polo GTi Down under, we won't really be seeing a performance version anytime shortly.

We had the Old-model focus ST170 around for a while, but the XR5 name just keeps it in line with current Ford Australia Performance badging. XR6, XR6 Turbo and XR8 are the others.....

And if theres a Mk2 RS that FPV can get at an affordable price, whats the bet they'll rename it with F5 at the start, following the F6 Typhoon and F6 Tornado

We have to keep things simple down Oz way. When your in the Northern parts of Australia, you order the beers by the colour, not the brand.:p

Had Focus for just a few years (slow seller) and only recently got Fiesta, also disappointing sales

The final UK passenger Ford here was 1980-ish Cortina, plus still-sold Transit (both were once re-powered by Falcon 4.1 6cyl btw) and the last Escort we got was the old MkII

Escort was replaced by Mazda 323-cloned Ford Laser with sporty TX3 (3door hatch) including TX3 AWD Turbo, a great unit. Also 626-clone the 5door Ford TX5 Turbo :)

The later TX3 with the Mazda BP18T are fantastic cars and real sleepers. You can liberate some serious HP from them. We have guys who race RX3 who have changed from the 12a turbo's to the BP18T and get close to 400hp on the engine dyno with the 36mill restrictor in the turbo. Only prob is they tend to throw rods out the side at 7ooorpm, that is easily fixed by going to aftermarket rods like carillo. All in all a ball buster of an engine.:D The Hp are real wheels is in grandma mode, its runs about 24psi of boost.

Yeah that sums them up, fantastic yet forgotten - funny that, isn't it? Must be because they lack the all-important bonnet scoop

A friend bought an almost new (KF?) TX3 AWD and he absolutely loved it. Before WRX, 4cyl performance cars didn't register with the V8 buying public so he got it cheap too. IIRC Mazda had a similar thing, the 323 SS?

Most will have forgotten how well TX3 AWDs did in Production racing, they got an amazing 2nd OUTRIGHT in the 1991 Bathurst 12-Hour enduro (against Supra Turbo, V8 Holden etc)

TX3 came very, very close to winning the '92 12-Hour (against final-gen Mazda RX7 turbo, BMW M5, Holden VN Group A etc) it was unlucky to do a CV joint in the last hour whilst again in 2nd, and closing

Once again you're right fpv. I was going from memory, didn't check

The one I was thinking of was the 1st-gen 323 SS, it was twin carbies n/a fwd. Because they weren't sold here I'm less familiar with Familia GT-R, aka GTX

I have doubts if there was a TX5 Turbo AWD, but after my SS bloop I'm not game to say!

There is a TX5 Turbo, they're the turbo model of the Telstar, bloke at my work has one. I don't think there was ever an AWD one, but he's a mad Telstar nut so I'll ask him

My Aunt and Uncle owned a Telstar TX5 Ghia back over in NZ, they never made an AWD version.

There was a Paul Radisich special edition that floated around Wellington though.

Biggest additions to the car - 16's. ROH specials, but still 16's. and a better exhaust.

They weren't bad looking cars actually, i sort of hoped to own a 626 V6 or a Telstar TX5 one day. Reliable and vaguely cool.
