Do you mean just the engine?

is it turbocharged or supercharged? One picture has a super, and another has a turbo.

Just the engine is American, nothing else. Most Ultimas use Chevy V8s ... doesn't make them American. My favourite Ultima is the Lexus V8 powered endurance racer built by some crazy Swede's. They scrapped the Chevy V8 because it is completley inefficient with the more tame Lexus V8. Turbocharged to around 1000bhp ... crazy stuff. I'll try and find the site.

The cars basically a mut it has an american engine, german axle, and I think its built in the uk. The one is a magnacharged LS2 and the other is a twin turbo chevy base engine that is suppose to push out 1000hp thats gonna go into the ultima. http://www.schwartzperformance.com/alien.htm

The block doesn't make the car mainly american. Around 25% American, but I just felt that was an exaggeration. :)

Yes ... what is wrong with that? It is a brutal engine but you can't exactly say it is frugal by any means. Compared with the Lexus block, the Chevy was useless for endurance.

Funny, last I checked the Lexus V8 was bigger, and heavier. And by no means is a SBC unreliable.

That's why Corvettes have been winning so many edurance races. :)

Who cares, this particular case is force fed and the Lexus will give far better valve area.

What is more important: valve area, or power/weight?

Well you tell me, the Ultima being mid engined has significantly less balance issues from the engine, and considering the engines pumping 3x its stock power, its going to want to flow as much fuel/air as possible.

Power to weight means very little here because it doesn't really make the engine more efficient. You can get more miles per gallon out of a Lexus V8 than you can a Chevy V8. This is proven fact by people who have actually tried it. I'm still trying to find their website. They compete in the more challenging version of Gumball but I can't remember the name.

@Nobleman - We're talking road cars here, not race cars.

By the way out of curiosity what is the Power/weight ratio because If it has around 1000Bhp and it probably weighs under a tonne it must be amazingly high:p

I'm not entirely sure. I'll find out when I remember the name of that "illegal" race that rivals Gumball :) Lets just say that an Ultima GTR 640 with a 640bhp Chevy V8 managed 0-60 in 2.6 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 230mph. I believe you can download the 232mph video from the internet but I saw it on a compilation DVD.

Theres no doubting that the Lexus V8 used in the endurance car is heavier than the small block Chevy V8 because the Chevy V8 is normally aspirated, where as the Lexus V8 has turbos fitted. I remember them saying themselves that they don't actually use the turbos until they really need them as with any forced induction, the amount of fuel used increases. However, top end power is essential in a road race of that sort because it is mainly over open highways. It means that they need not worry as much about handling and can concentrate more on full out power while keeping the fuel consumption to a minimum ... which is fair enough :)

The race you are talking about is Ultimate Rally. It has been pushed back a year to 2007 to ensure it is legal.

Aha - that's the one ... now lemme find that site :)

Edit: Seems I can't find the forum posts where they spoke of the Lexus V8. However, here is their current line-up. One of them has a Lexus V8 ... can anyone tell me which with the information provided? :D

I was confused as you said it was a race; I was thinking like a real race, not like Gumball. :)

depends on what chevy v8 engine you are using...for example the new LS1 with 400hp gets 30mpg;)

idno about lexus v8's...if they get more than 30 ill be surprised

Ahh the LS2 has 400HP the LS1 is like 300-350HP.

Ahh the Callaway-converted C4B LS1 delivered 400hp - as OE-fitted to GM's HSV GTS from 2000-2005, btw notably before 400hp Corvette appeared

I wonder .. if Lexus V8 was similarly equipped with moonshot overdrive gearing (like 6speed LS1/Tremec) would it also achieve 30 USmpg?

I thought the ultima had the LS6, which was much better then the ls1, and is as good as or better than the LS2.- so far, though the LS6 is not as potent as the LS2

Never even knew that engine was around....I though you meant stock HP.
