Anyway, making long story short:
They started in 1947 with cars based on pre-war BMWs (326, 327, 328). Later started using Chrysler V8 engines. Bristol cars were always conservative, even outdated, and somewhat odd in styling, but very luxurious. It was the kind of car you'd buy so that other people didn't notice that you were wealthy. The newest model - Fighter - is still luxurious and somewhat odd, but no more conservative IMO.
Bristol cars have lately been named after classic fighter planes produced by its predecessor Bristol Aeroplane Company(Brigand, Beaufort, Beaufighter, Britannia, Blenheim)

Edit: To give you a hint on the luxury level we're talking about - Bristol Fighter's price in UK is 230,000 GBP and it's S version 257,000 GBP.

Back when I was at school a friend used to make me green with envy when he rolled up in an equally green Bristol 403, a beautiful machine lent to him by his Dad on a regular basis! The 403 was almost thirty years old at that point but still looked like an absolute spaceship compared to the brand new local cars which were around then
