A mate of mine from college has a series 4 RX7. I got my first ride in it tonight, and there was a little badge on the dash above the glove box. It read: "RX7 Sports" and in small type below said "No. 11", kind've like it might've been a special model. Does anyone have any knowledge/info/production numbers concerning any SP model RX7 Series 4's, because I believe that one would be worth a lot more than my mate paid, considering it's stock and in damn good nick.

Series 4 was the beginning of the Fc rx-7's.
1st gen - series 1,2 & 3
2nd gen - series 4 & 5
3rd gen - series 6

atleast i think thats it

Edit: yeah, i found a site. http://www.nzrotaries.com/info/catalog/index.htm look at the bottom.

And that actually shows what the sport model is too if you look closely:

"RX7 FC 1031 Sports & Limited Coupe Feb 1986 - June 1986
Engine 13B Rotary six-port 2 X 654cc (1308cc) EGI, 110Kw. 5 speed manual (std.) 4 speed ECAT (opt.).
15" alloy wheels, four wheel disc brakes with 4 piston front calipers.
Limited: power windows, elec. mirrors, auto adjust suspension, electric sunroof and cruise control. "

the SP's are still worth like 50-60k, only 25 road going cars were made iirc. they're also next to imposible to differentiate from a spirit R :)

i'm not sure :) the SP's RX-7's were last gen (FD) RX-7's taken by Mazda and prepared to race at bathurst, with roadgoing versions made :) the difference is in the wheels, suspension, spoiler and a power boost.
edit: vaigra has some proper info on them i think.

So then yes it is a series 6.

IIRC one of the most important mods to the SP was intercooler, as stock RX7s suffered from bad heat soak after only a few laps and quickly lost their performance edge

I think that must be it. It was actually the first time I'd been a rotary car, let alone a turbo one, and he gave it some stick and it's just such a smooth power delivery, not big turbo spike and it revved smoothly straight out to 7 grand

What the hell is the point of an rx7 with an ls1? You buy a rotary cos its a rotary.
