LAND ROVER ‘GOES BEYOND’ WITH NEW ADVENTURE WEBSITE THAT INCLUDES 24/7 BROADBAND TV CHANNEL

Gaydon, Warwickshire, 13 April 2006 –Land Rover is to launch a new website dedicated to the spirit of adventure and featuring high profile Land Rover drivers such as Maria Sharapova, sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, England Rugby International Lawrence Dallaglio and celebrity photographer Richard Young.
Content rich and fully interactive, Go Beyond is about lifestyle, not cars, and is one of the most ambitious online projects ever created. Incorporating the world's first broadband TV channel to be launched by a car company, Go Beyond launches at the New York International Auto Show on 12 April.
‘Go Beyond is about going beyond personal boundaries and experiencing adventure in its many forms,’ says Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover. ‘It amplifies the core brand promise of Land Rover. It will also enhance our dealer environments, and work in tandem with our landrover.co.uk website to drive sales and further improve customer loyalty.’
Mr Popham continues, ‘The aim is to suit everybody’s idea of going beyond. It is certainly not a motoring web site, although you can find out all about our Land Rover range of vehicles and many of the adventures will feature Land Rovers. For some, off-roading in Africa will be their idea of going beyond. For others, it may be as simple as trying a new wine or experimenting with new and exotic cuisine.’
The Go Beyond website and TV channel will focus on real people living lives much less ordinary and can be accessed on any computer with a broadband connection.
It will also be displayed at Land Rover dealerships and major motor shows and will be ultimately available for download to mobile phones or hand-held consoles like the Sony PSP or iPod. A Go Beyond link on www.landrover.co.uk (http://www.landrover.co.uk/) takes users to the new site.
Six unique channels of Go Beyond TV will cover all aspects of 21st century adventure from travel, to amazing Land Rover off-road journeys, food and wine, and people and places. The content will be premium, contemporary and adventurous – three of the cornerstones of the Land Rover brand.
Containing a blend of original content, material from the Discovery Channel, Land Rover’s award-winning One Life customer magazine and sponsored partners including Born Free, Biosphere Expeditions and the Royal Geographical Society, Go Beyond is a distinctive, premium, glossy, magazine style community of people who live the Land Rover brand.
‘The website will be inclusive and aspirational,’ says Steve Hobbs, editor of Go Beyond. ‘It will tell real-life stories of people who go beyond every day. Adventure means different things to different people and we intend to cover a wide range of extraordinary activities. It could include anything from climbing Mount Everest to simply taking the scenic route home from work. Preferably off road.
‘We aim to build a community of people who live the Go Beyond life, and communicate with each other through our website. Of course, they can just read about it on our website or watch it on our TV channel but we hope that most will actively participate.’
Go Beyond TV launches in New York with four hours material running on a rolling schedule, with four hours of new content added every month. In addition, there will be live telecasts (from, for example, motor shows) and updates from special events. This will include the Land Rover G4 Challenge, which begins in Thailand on 23 April.
The content can also be viewed on demand as part of a fully searchable video library.
More content will be added to the new Go Beyond website at the British International Motor Show in London in July.
Go Beyond can be accessed through the www.landrover.co.uk (http://www.landrover.co.uk/) website.

Caparo T1 prototype to debut at Monaco
The first ever Caparo T1, the world’s most exclusive prototype high performance road and track car, will premiere at the world’s most prestigious motoring event: the Top Marques show in Monaco. The dramatic 1,000bhp-per-tonne T1, which defines an entirely new breed of supercar that is lighter than a Caterham but with twice the power-to-weight ratio of a Bugatti Veyron, will be unveiled at the show by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II.
This exclusive preview of the first prototype T1 forms a significant centrepiece for the show, which is being held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte-Carlo in the heartland of one of the world's most glamorous locations and centres of motoring heritage. The presentation of the aerodynamically formed supercar will be witnessed by Angad Paul chief executive of Caparo plc together with Caparo Vehicle Technologies’ design director Ben Scott-Geddes and engineering director Graham Halstead, the two ex-McLaren engineers whose inspiration helped create the car.
The ultra lightweight T1, which weighs less than 500kg, is a British designed 2-seater which has been developed using aerospace and high formula racing technology. The compact Caparo V8 engine develops approximately 500bhp and the resultant 1,000bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio endows the T1 with an extraordinary 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds, 0-100mph time of 5 seconds and 0-100-0mph time of less than 10 seconds making it the world’s fastest accelerating and braking road car. It is also fast round corners with 3g braking and cornering ability equivalent to a Le Mans Prototype.
The T1’s high power-to-weight ratio delivers phenomenal performance on the track. Similarly, the same principles of lightweight design in a car one-third the weight of the average family saloon combined with a normal 15 gallon (70-litre) fuel tank means a range better than the average car of up to 500 miles (800km) on public highways. And that is sufficient to tackle seven hours of driving from London to Le Mans, a distance of 338 miles (544km), without refuelling, before putting in a blistering performance on the circuit.
Commenting on the mould-breaking Caparo T1 Angad Paul said: "This car is in a class of its own when it comes to overall performance; but it also addresses in the most dramatic way possible fundamental design issues facing the automotive industry today. The same approach to aerodynamics, choice of materials and efficient design, which have allowed us to achieve the world’s most reasonably priced supercar, can be applied in equal measure to create affordable, safe, yet lightweight, fuel-efficient family cars."
This will be the first time that Caparo Vehicle Technologies has exhibited at any event. The stunning T1 was created to demonstrate the company’s ability to design and manufacture the world’s first 1,000bhp-per-tonne road and track car, whose performance is close to that of a formula one racer. More than a concept, this ultra high performance car is designed for low volume production to underscore the company’s technical know-how and competence in whole vehicle design. With deposits already being taken the hand built car will be available to the first customers later this year.
Event director Robert Evans said: "We are delighted to welcome the Caparo T1 to the Top Marques show in Monaco where up to 10,000 high net worth collectors and enthusiasts, together with 120 journalists and television crews from around the world, will view an amazing mix of luxury cars and rare supercars at this prestigious motoring event. The T1 is a truly exceptional car and its groundbreaking approach will appeal not only to our VIP visitors but also mainstream automotive engineers facing the enormous challenge of how to stop cars from getting heavier and heavier with each new generation."

Caparo has confirmed that it will present the T1 prototype for the duration of the show, which runs from Thursday 20 April to Sunday 23 April 2006 in the week following Easter. Some of the most exclusive car brands in the world will feature at the show with manufacturers present from around the globe.
As well as opening the show and unveiling the Caparo T1, Prince Albert will officially bestow his high patronage by hosting a gala dinner for 450 wealthy, titled and influential VIPs where a substantial amount of the proceeds will be donated to some of the Prince’s charities.

Aston Martin Racing to contest Houston and Mid-Ohio

After recording a double podium finish in the opening round at Sebring in March, Aston Martin Racing will be returning to the United States to contest the second and third rounds of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Houston and Mid-Ohio.

"We are pleased to confirm our attendance of the next two American Le Mans Series races," said James Turner, Commercial Director of Aston Martin Racing. "At the moment, we are working extremely hard to secure the sponsorship to enable us to compete in the full series and we have some very exciting partnerships under discussion. As always, we are delighted to be back in the US where the fans give us a warm reception and the racing is well-promoted."

Starting at the Lone Star Grand Prix in Houston on Friday 12 May – the inaugural running of the street race in the ALMS calendar – Aston Martin Racing will field two DBR9s before moving on to Mid-Ohio, for the two-hour, 25 minute sprint race which takes place on Sunday 21 May.

The Lone Star Grand Prix will take place on a 9-turn, 1.7-mile temporary street circuit at Reliant Park and the race will see the two Aston Martin Racing DBR9s facing challenging hairpin turns and fast straights.

Aston Martin Racing Team Principal George Howard-Chappell said: "The next two races will be interesting as we have never been to either venue before. The street course at Houston will present its own challenges for the team.

"We have been working hard with our partner Pirelli to develop the tyres and the set up and IMSA has done an excellent job in equalising performance within the GT1 class. The two DBR9s have been given a performance break and will run 25kg lighter than at Sebring which should result in really close racing between Aston Martin Racing and our competitors.

The team’s two DBR9s, which will compete in both races, will be numbered 007 and 009. In car 007 (red highlights) Tomas Enge (Czech Republic) and Darren Turner (UK) will take the wheel with Pedro Lamy (Portugal) and Stephane Sarrazin (France) in car 009 (yellow highlights).

The Lone Star Grand Prix is scheduled to start at 8 pm CDT on May 12 in Houston. Qualifying is set for 6:15 pm CDT on May 11.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage voted best production car design

13 April, 2006 – Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage and DB9 have taken first and third places in a high profile poll of automotive design professionals. In their recent readership survey, readers of website Car Design News voted the Aston Martin V8 Vantage their favourite current production car design, with the Aston Martin DB9 in third place. The poll for Car Design News, a leading online source of information for the automotive design industry, brought over 1000 responses, the majority from working automotive designers and students of car design.

"It's a fantastic result for Aston Martin," said Nick Hull, Director of Car Design News. "Our readers have a high awareness of proportions and design details – there was a precise discernment in voting between V8 Vantage, Vanquish and DB9."

As well as being placed an impressive first and third place in the top ten, additional votes for the Aston Martin Vanquish meant that the total scores for the three Aston Martin models were higher than for any other brand, including BMW, Porsche, Mercedes and Lamborghini.

Every Aston Martin expresses the core values of power, beauty and soul, from the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, introduced in 2005, to the V12-engined DB9 and DB9 Volante and the flagship Vanquish S. Bodywork is taut and poised, with strong muscular surfaces that are instantly recognisable. "Our designers and modellers work with a sculptural language," said Aston Martin's Design Director Marek Reichman. "The play of light on the surface is incredibly important to us."

Aston Martin's design tradition is underpinned by the company's unique VH architecture, an extruded aluminium construction platform that provides exceptional manufacturing flexibility and forms the backbone of the current generation of Aston Martins. VH allows us "to keep the form language and soul of the product," says Reichman, "Aston Martin should always be about the proportions."

Aston Martins combine power and sporting ability with refinement, exceptionally beautiful yet also discrete. Car designers around the world clearly agree.

Ascari Tops List of Drivers’ Cars

Banbury based supercar manufacturer, Ascari, continues to rack up the accolades with the company’s 500bhp KZ1 claiming top spot in Evo magazine’s Fast Club 2006 shootout.

"Great to drive on the road – supple and responsive, vocal and very fast, and small scale wieldly too" were just some of the comments from Evo’s test team, with the KZ1 also picking up points for its track performance, not to mention the 180mph top speed at Millbrook’s high speed circuit – a full 10mph quicker than the second place car.

Bringing together 21 of the year’s best drivers’ cars, the annual showdown featured in this month’s issue of the magazine, saw the Ascari KZ1 go head to head with the likes of the reworked Lamborghini Gallardo, the 7-litre V8 Corvette Z06 and the Porsche 911 Carrera Sport, with each car put through their paces at Millbrook Proving Ground and Bedford Autodrome. As well as the high speed run at Millbrook, each car was fired through Bedford Autodrome’s West Circuit before facing the ultimate test of a car’s engine and braking performance – the 0-100-0mph test.

The quickest car to 100mph in 8.7 seconds, the KZ1 was also one of the three fastest cars around the West Circuit test track – lapping in an impressive 123.20seconds. With the car’s success at Millbrook’s high speed circuit, the KZ1 enjoyed front running performances in all disciplines.

Sales and Marketing Director for Ascari, Chris Burton, said, "This is a great result for the company and a real tribute to the work and effort put in by the whole team. Evo magazine is one of the biggest publications in the industry so to come out number one in their annual Fast Club feature is a real boost for Ascari and our clients. We look forward to building upon this success in the future."

ENERGY SAVINGS CHALLENGE 2006

13 April 2006, Goodwood

Since it opened in 2003 procedures have been put in place at the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars manufacturing plant and head office at Goodwood to continuously improve energy consumption. Employees are encouraged to make recommendations for savings in the workplace as part of an internal initiative. An Energy Group has now been set up to look at further opportunities for conservation.
For instance, by analysing production requirements, employees in the paint shop recommended energy production measures which resulted in a total saving of £80,000 per year.

Electricity consumption overall at the manufacturing plant dropped by 21.02% in 2005 on the previous year’s figures and gas reduced by 26.43% over the same period, resulting in a joint saving of 8465.71 MWh. This is the equivalent to a saving of 2358.97 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Other initiatives include the installation of a Waste Management Centre which has resulted in 54% of total waste in 2005 being recycled, generating over £26,059 in revenue. The target for 2006 is 70% recycling.

Ian Robertson, Chairman and Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said, "I am very proud that suggestions made by employees at Goodwood are contributing to our energy savings initiative. I believe the targets we have set ourselves for 2006 are achievable and possible through continued teamwork."

BMW 3 Series named World Car of the Year 2006

The new BMW 3 Series has been named ‘2006 World Car of the Year’ at a presentation during the New York International Auto Show. A jury of 46 international automotive journalists reviewed every new car available around the world and, in an exhaustive selection process, narrowed them down to three – the BMW 3 Series, Mazda MX-5 and Porsche Cayman S. At the ceremony, the 3 Series was awarded the prestigious World Car of the Year honour thanks to its balance of ride, handling, performance and interior space.

Graham Johnson, co-Chairman of the World Car of the Year steering committee said: "The new 3 Series delivers a balance of traits that only a few cars on the market offer. BMW’s compact executive doubles up as a family car during the week and a sports car at the weekends. This unique double-act, twinned with the 3 Series’ exceptional levels of refinement, meant the BMW was a clear winner."

The World Car of the Year accolade follows a number of UK awards bestowed upon BMW’s new 3 Series model range.

In January 2006, the BMW 320d ES was awarded the What Car? Car of the Year 2006 accolade as well as the Compact Executive category. At the awards, Steve Fowler, Group Editor of What Car?, commented: "The BMW 3 Series emerged as a clear winner. We’d expected BMW’s Compact Exec contender to be good, but we didn’t expect it to be this good. No other car is as great in so many ways as the 3 Series."

The What Car? Car of the Year award came at the same time as BMW scooped a clutch of top honours at the Fleet Excellence Awards – the voting of which is drawn from the 30,000 plus readers of Fleet Week and Fleet Management. Proving that BMW offers products that appeal to the business user as well as private buyers, the 3 Series won the coveted ‘User Chooser Car of the Year’ overall prize alongside its category win.

Tristan Young, Editor of Fleet Week, said of the winning car: "Available from under £20,000, the 3 Series range provides choice for any business and its drivers, offering seven different engines and four specification levels. A class-leading combination of fuel economy, emissions and performance irrespective of model, cements its appeal to the all important company car driver audience."

The top honours given to BMW by the World Car of the Year jurors, What Car? and Fleet News and Fleet Management come hot on the heels of a host of other awards. Since its launch in March 2005, both Auto Express and Test Drive magazines have awarded the 3 Series their Best Compact Executive car of 2005. Last year culminated in the 3 Series being awarded the coveted Scottish Car of the Year award – the first time BMW had ever won the principal ‘gong’ north of the border.

CATERHAM UNLEASHES ITS NEW SUPERLIGHT R400

British sportscar maker, Caterham, has revealed details of its latest racing-bred road car, the Superlight R400.

This keenly anticipated new model uses the Seven’s classic formula of motorsport technology and minimalism to deliver a car weighing just 525kg, capable of effortlessly sprinting out of the blocks to 60mph in 3.8 seconds.

The heart of the Seven is the new Cosworth-developed 2.0-litre powerplant that is mated, for the first time, to the legendary de Dion chassis.

Delivering an explosive 210bhp at 7600rpm – equivalent to a massive 400bhp per tonne - and 150lbft of torque at 6300 rpm, the engine embodies Cosworth’s vast expertise in performance engine development. With its near-telepathic steering, muscular power delivery, and epic cornering ability, the R400 is a superlative car for the keen driver.

Sitting purposefully on bespoke Avon CR500 tyres and 15" wheels, the new model is also fitted as standard with dry sump, limited slip differential, carbon fibre front wings, composite bucket race seats, four-point harness and a composite wind deflector in lieu of a windscreen.

The car is the first new model from Caterham following the introduction of state of the art chassis construction techniques, which have resulted in a substantial 14% increase in torsional rigidity. The increased stiffness translates to even greater real-world cornering performance and handling feel than before. This huge leap forward for Caterham has been unlocked through a switch to a new chassis supplier, Caged, who have invested heavily in sophisticated laser cutting and robot welding technology.

The new Superlight R400 is the successor to the hugely popular Rover K-Series engined R400, a car that not only enjoyed great success on the road, but also excelled on the circuit through Caterham’s R400 and Eurocup race series.

Derived from the C400 race car, which will be setting alight the Caterham Superlight Challenge grids in 2006, the new model continues Caterhams’ long admired tradition of developing "a race car for the road".

Such is the demand for the new R400 that Caterham has been taking orders for several months despite not having announced specification or pricing.

First in the queue to own the car is rock legend Chris Rea, a long standing Seven owner. "When I heard about plans to introduce a replacement for the old R400, I simply had to have one!" commented Rea. "The combination of Cosworth power and the Series 3 chassis delivers an adrenaline rush and a level of performance that I cannot resist."

Caterham is pleased to be able to offer the new 2006 car at a lower price than the outgoing R400, despite the gains in performance. This supercar-beating Seven available in component form, for those wishing to self-build, for £26,995 or fully built at the firm’s Dartford factory for £29,495.

Caterham is taking orders now. Production begins in July.

VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES PETROL REVOLUTION WITH TSI TECHNOLOGY

Following the success of its TDI and FSI engines, Volkswagen is launching the latest in a line of pioneering inventions with the introduction of TSI petrol technology.

FSI uses direct injection to improve combustion efficiency and hence reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Taking this further, TSI uses – for the first time ever –
an FSI engine which is then dual-charged through a combination of an engine driven supercharger and an exhaust gas turbocharger arranged in series.

The driving characteristics of the new TSI engine are improved over those of the current FSI unit. The belt-driven supercharger operates at lower engine speeds, with the turbocharger coming in as the engine speed increases. The result of this is excellent driveability and performance throughout the range with no turbo lag and high maximum torque.

The new TSI engine has a capacity of 1.4-litres (1390 cc) and produces either 140 or 170 PS. The 170 PS version has the same peak power as a conventional 2.3-litre petrol unit but with 20 per cent lower fuel consumption, returning 38.2 mpg on the combined cycle. It also produces impressive torque of 177 lbs ft (240 Nm) from 1,750 through to 4,500 rpm.

The combination of these technologies enables a small capacity engine with a high compression ratio to cruise at part load on high gearing to combine dramatic performance with exceptional fuel consumption for a petrol engine.

At the same time, the Golf line-up will be joined by a new 2.0-litre TDI engine producing 170 PS – the most potent diesel-powered unit ever produced for a Golf.
A development of the popular 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI engine, this new powerplant uses Piezo electric elements to control precisely the fuel injection, thus maximising power output but minimising consumption and emissions. Emissions are further reduced by a maintenance-free particulate filter.

Maximum torque of 258 lbs ft (350 Nm) is available from 1,750 rpm. A top speed of 137 mph and 0-62 mph in just 8.2 seconds mean strong performance, yet combined consumption of 46.3 mpg guarantees little time and money spent at the pumps.

These new petrol and diesel engines have prompted a revision in the Golf line-up. The existing GT trim will be altered to look more like the GTI, gaining a new front grille, GT badges, 17" ‘ClassiX’ alloy wheels, lowered suspension (by 15 mm) and twin exhaust pipes. Both the 2.0-litre 140 and 170 PS TDI engines as well as the 1.4-litre 170 PS TSI petrol will be offered in GT trim. Prices will start at £17,995 for the 140 PS TDI; £19,095 for the 170 PS TDI; and £18,095 for the 170 PS TSI. Further down the range, the Sport trim will now be available with the 1.4-litre TSI 140 PS (£15,995),
2.0-litre 105 PS TDI (£16,025) and 2.0-litre 140 PS TDI (£17,320) units.

The revised Golf range will be available to order from 21 April. Volkswagen Retailers can provide a service to customers interested in purchasing with finance through the financial services arm of the Volkswagen Group, Volkswagen Finance*. Around 80 per cent of new cars are now bought with some form of finance or borrowing. Volkswagen Finance supports the Retailer network with a range of finance and insurance products including its flexible personal contract plan, Solutions. Such plans could ensure that a customer gets more Volkswagen for their motoring budget.

CHRYSLER GROUP OFFERS UNRIVALLED VALUE FOR DODGE CALIBER

The new Dodge Caliber is due to arrive in the UK in July – and Chrysler Group has just revealed the stunning price of the first right hand drive Dodge car to come to the UK.

There are four models in the range – S, SE, SXT and SXT Sport – with a choice of two petrol and one diesel engine.

The range starts with the1.8-litre petrol Caliber S priced at £11,495 with a five speed manual gearbox. The Caliber S 2.0-litre diesel with a six speed manual gearbox is priced at £13,495.

Steve Gray, Marketing Director for Chrysler Group UK, said: "The new Dodge Caliber is a striking looking car and the Caliber’s looks and outstanding value for money will set the segment alight when it launches in July.

"All of our research says that drivers are bored with the bland offerings in this part of the market – they want a boldly styled, affordable car. The Caliber is between 10 – 25 per cent cheaper than the equivalent VW Golf when you look at specification but it isn’t your typical family hatchback. It combines eye-catching crossover styling with space-efficient packaging, loads of interior space, innovative features and a choice of great engines."

The entry-level S model features fabric seats, power windows, power steering, AM/FM radio with single CD, halogen headlights, heated and powered folding mirrors, driver and front passenger airbags, 60/40 split rear seats that fold flat, tachometer, tilt steering wheel, interior removeable/rechargeable lamp, Thatcham Category 1 security system and 17-inch steel wheels with five-spoke wheel covers as standard.

The 2.0-litre petrol, with a CVT auto at no extra cost, is available in SXT or SXT Sport spec priced from £13,790. The SXT model comes with leather upholstery as standard.

The front-wheel drive Dodge Caliber will be sold in all 88 Chrysler Group dealers in the UK. It is the first of a series of new Dodge products coming into the UK over the next three years. The Dodge Nitro is the brand’s first mid-size SUV and will be launched in the UK during 2007. The Nitro is a five-seater SUV that is designed to attract customers seeking a vehicle with distinctive styling, sporty performance and a very flexible interior.

PSA Peugeot Citroën announces intention to cease production at Ryton in 2007
Jean Martin Folz, Chief Executive Officer of PSA Peugeot Citroën, has today announced to staff and Trade Unions that it is the Group’s intention to cease activity at its Ryton manufacturing facility near Coventry in the West Midlands in 2007.

The proposal follows a detailed study during the first quarter of 2006 by the Group of its industrial cost effectiveness which has clearly confirmed the weaknesses for the Ryton plant - high production and logistical costs - which mean that the Group is unable to justify the investment needed for the production of future vehicles.

These internal factors, together with reduced demand and intense competition in Europe, have led the Group to come to this difficult conclusion, having already reduced production at a number of other European sites at the end of 2005.

The Group’s proposal is that production at Ryton is brought to a close in two phases; in the first instance the factory, which today operates two shifts, moves to a single shift in July 2006, with production not continuing beyond mid 2007. For the Group, 2300 jobs are affected.

Having presented the proposal to its staff at the plant, the Group will now enter into consultation with the Trade Unions. The Group remains committed to its social responsibilities and will work closely with Trade Unions and Government throughout the coming months to provide a comprehensive support package for its staff and to help as many as possible to find alternative employment

HONDA CIVIC HYBRID WINS ‘WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR’ AWARD

Honda’s new Civic Hybrid has been declared World Green Car for 2006. A jury of 46 international motoring journalists awarded the prestigious title to the environmentally-friendlier vehicle as part of the World Car of the Year Awards. The Civic Hybrid achieves a combined fuel economy of 61.4 miles per gallon and emits fewer carbon emissions than most cars on the road (109g/km).

"Honda continues to be a leader in producing environmentally responsible vehicles that set the standard for fuel economy and low emissions," said John Mendel, Senior Vice President, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The award-winning 2006 Civic Hybrid is the latest embodiment of Honda’s long-term commitment to the development of environmentally friendly technologies that are also fun to drive."

The Honda Civic Hybrid went on sale in the UK earlier this month. It’s still the cheapest hybrid car available in Britain, priced from just £16,300. It also has an insurance rating of seven (two groups lower than an equivalent petrol-engined car), and the residual value – according to new figures from Glass’s Guide – is 39 per cent after 3 years/60,000 miles. The Civic Hybrid still receives a 100 per cent discount from London’s Congestion Charge.

On-the-road prices from £31,890 (RX 350)

INTRODUCTION

Since launch in 2003, the RX 300 has proved a strong performer in the petrol-powered premium SUV segment, frequently topping the UK sales charts in its class. The introduction of the new RX 350 provides even stronger performance, with greater fuel economy and lower emissions, to further strengthen the model’s market position.

The key change is the introduction of a new 3.5-litre V6 engine that is not only the leader in its class in terms of power and acceleration, but which also outperforms its six-cylinder petrol-powered rivals in fuel consumption and emissions. Needless to say, the figures also mark significant advances on the previous 3.0-litre unit deployed in the RX 300.

The RX 350 shares the same class-leading specifications as the previous RX 300, with the addition of a new Lexus Multimedia and Navigation pack, which includes a more sophisticated 11-speaker Mark Levinson premium hi-fi.

NEW 3.5-LITRE V6 ENGINE

The new Lexus RX 350 offers greater driving pleasure with class-leading performance from its new, state-of-the-art 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine. The 24-valve aluminium block unit is the first in its segment to adopt Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent), an optimised low pressure loss, variable intake and exhaust valve-timing system.

The engine also benefits from hydraulic valve compensators for roller rocker valve operation, and an electrically-activated Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), which varies the level of air induction by automatically adjusting the length of the intake pipe according to engine speed.

The result is smooth operation and excellent efficiency, delivering high performance with low fuel consumption and emissions levels. The new V6 is the most powerful, yet also the most economical of all conventional V6 petrol engines in the premium SUV market. It develops 272bhp (276 DIN hp) at 6,200rpm and 342Nm of torque at 4,700rpm, giving nought to 62mph acceleration in 7.8 seconds – better than any other petrol six-cylinder model in its class. The top speed is electronically limited to 124mph.

These figures do not conceal a penalty in fuel consumption. On the combined cycle, the new RX 350 can achieve 25.2mpg, eight per cent better than the previous RX 300 and ahead of all its six-cylinder class rivals.

IMPROVED DRIVETRAIN

The new V6 engine is matched to the same five-speed automatic transmission as the previous RX 300, but performance and economy have been improved thanks to the adoption of new shift control logic. Moving the gear lever in S mode activates a manual five-speed sequential shift system that provides better engine braking, precise control and greater driver involvement.

The permanent four-wheel drive system has a new centre differential with a viscous coupling, giving a limited-slip capability. This aids smooth delivery of the extra power available (35 per cent greater than the RX 300) and, allied to the retuned Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC) systems, gives better traction and stability in all driving conditions.

SHARPER STEERING

The steering of the new Lexus RX 350 has also been reconfigured to give a more direct and positive feel. Additional assistance at low speeds makes parking manoeuvres easier, complementing the vehicle’s best-in-class 5.7m turning radius.

REDUCED NOISE AND VIBRATION

Particular attention has been paid to reducing noise and vibration levels, ensuring that, although the new RX 350 is substantially more powerful than its predecessor, it is quieter at all engine speeds.

Measures to achieve this include a new bonnet insulator, dashboard silencer, improvements to the exhaust system and a new acoustic windscreen, with a special inner film that reduces noise levels in the cabin by up to 3dB.

LEXUS MULTIMEDIA AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM

The new RX 350 offers owners a combined multimedia and satellite navigation package that delivers new high levels of technical innovation, flexibility and ease of use.

Fitted as standard to the RX 350 SE-L and offered as an extra-cost option on the RX 350 SE, it includes an improved 11-speaker Mark Levinson hi-fi system with a seven-channel 210 watt digital DSP amplifier. It will play CDs, audio and video DVDs and MP3 and WMA files stored on disc. Movies and music videos on DVDs can be enjoyed on the central Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display screen on the centre console.

The navigation system provides route calculation 65 per cent quicker than before and is equipped with a voice command system that can also be used to activate several navigation, audio, climate and telephone functions. Bluetooth connectivity is also included, for hands-free use of mobile telephones.

To complete the package, the Lexus Parking Assist Monitor makes reverse manoeuvres simple and safe, automatically providing a real-time colour image on the EMV screen of the area immediately behind the vehicle when reverse gear is selected. The images can also be overlaid with guidelines for extra help when easing into a parking space.

LEXUS RX 350 AND THE UK MARKET

In the UK, Lexus sold 4,538 RX models in 2005 of which 3,026 were the RX 300 and 1,512 were the hybrid power RX 400h, taking the cumulative total since 2000 to more than 16,000. For the remainder of 2006, it is aiming for around 1,000 RX 350 sales, with 1,800 targeted for 2007.

QUAIFE MSA BRITISH RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Perfect day for Doran

British Rallycross champion Pat Doran began the defence of his title in the best possible way by winning round one of the Quaife MSA British Rallycross Championship at Lydden on Monday (April 17).

"It’s the perfect start and it’s been a brilliant day," said Doran, "I had a little problem with the gearbox in the A final and again in the Superfinal but it didn’t make any difference in the end, I couldn’t have had a better start to the year."

Doran (Milstead) didn’t look back after setting fastest time in the first qualifying heat. Second fastest time in the second heat was enough to assure the champion of pole position for the Supercar A final on a day when none of his rivals had a trouble free run.

Former champion Dermot Carnegie (Dublin) was fastest in the third heat but had been lucky to post second fastest time in the first heat where he had lost the use of fourth gear. Only sixth fastest in the second heat, Carnegie pulled a much needed result out of the bag in the third heat where he set fastest time. Completing the front row starters was Christopher Evans (Wicklow). The Opel Astra driver suffered differential problems in practice and the first heat but struck back in the second heat where he set fastest time. Evans was then forced to retire from the third heat when exhaust fumes leaked into the car.

It was Evans who chased Doran in the opening laps of the A final, his pursuit of the champion only curtailed when rising engine temperatures forced him to ease up and John McCluskey (Dublin) moved ahead. McCluskey cut into Doran’s lead and, helped by the fact that Doran was struggling to select fourth gear, closed on the leader and was just 0.5s adrift at the race end.

Evans held on to third place ahead of Carnegie and Andrew Jordan (Sutton Coldfield) who earned his place in the record books as the youngest ever Supercar racer and did so with a highly accomplished performance.

Doran took pole for the Superfinal in which he was again chased by Evans. the faulty gearshift cost Doran time in the third lap and allowed Evans close enough to make a serious challenge. Evans worked Doran hard for a lap before soaring engine temperatures again forced him to ease up. Doran was off the hook and on his way to the win while Evans managed to contain Carnegie and keep hold of second.

Phil Collard (Thundersley) posted a personal best fourth place finish and was best of the two-wheel drive SuperModified cars after Dave Bellerby (Northallerton) was forced to retire his A final winning Lotus Elise with one lap to run.

Michael Boak (Newcastle upon Tyne) took fifth place in his Audi TT, Bellerby classified sixth ahead of Jordan who suffered a driveshaft failure at the start but nursed his Ford Focus through four laps to secure championship points. McCluskey retired after two laps after his Citroen Xsara sustained a puncture.

Bellerby completely dominated the SuperModified category, setting fastest times in all three heats and then running away from the pack to record a clear victory in the A final.

Behind Bellerby there was a mighty battle as Mike Howlin (Haverfordwest), Boak and Mike Turpin (Hereford) disputed second place. Turpin eventually managed to wrest the place from? Howlin who was then also passed by Boak. The race was not yet run and Howlin fought back, eventually retaking the place from Boak after contact between the two in the last lap. The incident was later investigated by event officials who excluded Howlin from the results, so Boak took third place ahead of Collard, Allan Tapscott (Umberleigh) and class debutant Simon White (Yateley).

Established front runners Julian Godfrey (Heathfield) and Rodney Green (Bromley) ruled the roost in the Yokohama Stock Hatch category where Godfrey took the win. Godfrey secured pole for the A final with fastest times in the first and second qualifying heats. Green topped the third heats and pipped Godfrey to fastest time in class by chipping 0.08s off his rival’s best time.

In the final it was Godfrey who led from the start, Green running second all the way and eventually finishing two seconds behind Godfrey’s winning Peugeot 205 GTi. Tony Lynch (Burnley) chased Godfrey and Green home in third place and was just ahead of Steve Heppenstall (Blackburn) and Simon Horton (Clitheroe).

Harry Sherrard took a personal best seventh place finish with his Ford Fiesta XR2 ahead of Phil Chicken (Leeds). Liam Doran (Milstead) ran as high as third before retiring in the third lap after his Citroen Saxo picked up a puncture.

Junior Rallycross with Bill Gwynne Rallyschool International

Kyle Orr (Dromore) started as clear favourite for the Junior title and underlined his status by setting the pace and winning the first round of the Bill Gwynne Rallyshool International championship.

Ben Rennison (Richmond) emerged from the pack to challenge Orr and set fastest time in the third qualifying heat, in which Orr had no need to race having already secured pole position for the A final.

Liam Harrison completed the front row starters and chased Orr and Rennison through the final. Orr led from start to finish but was worked hard all the way as Rennison refused to be left behind, several times threatened to take the lead and was just 0.51s behind Orr at the chequered flag.

Behind Harrison, Dave Weston (Aberdeen) fought back from a second lap slip that dropped him to last place and finished fourth ahead of Mathew Nesbitt (Armagh) and George Tracey Jnr (Dublin). Joe Cunningham’s (Northallerton) first championship event ended when a mechanical failure caused his car to spin and crash one lap from the end of the race.

BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship

The supporting BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship delivered class wins for Sean McAdden - who pipped Phil Collard to take the SuperModified honours - and Kyle Orr who repeated his success in the British Junior championship. Ben Rennison was again second, but this time third went to Ben Power (Welshpool), ahead of Tracey Jnr and Harrison.

The Stock Hatch category had 26 starters and was won by pole starter Steve Heppenstall (Blackburn). Second place was taken by Ryan Lawford (Canterbury) who enjoyed a successful debut event and rose from sixth on the grid to take second place in the A final.

CITROËN C4 – 2006 WORLD CAR DESIGN OF THE YEAR

Citroën’s popular C4 has been voted 2006 World Car Design of the Year, at the New York International Auto Show, in acknowledgement of the way it has helped to push the established boundaries of innovation and style.

From a shortlist of 27 vehicles, the judging panel of The World Car of the Year Awards in Manhattan gave the Citroën C4 top honours, ahead of the BMW 3-Series and the Honda Civic.

Key to its success was the innovation that Citroën has displayed in creating a design that enabled two distinct body styles, coupé and 5-door, to be built on the same platform. The model’s aerodynamics, which the Award’s organisers recognised as a traditional cornerstone of Citroën’s character, also played a role.

The C4’s interior also captured the imagination of the judging panel with the debut of Citroën’s innovative fixed hub steering wheel.

This major International Award complements a long list of accolades that the C4 has already received, including Best hatchback from both Top Gear and Diesel Car magazines as well as British Car of the Year from Auto Express readers. It has also won a brace of awards in the British Insurance Car Security Awards.

And this world-beating design is available today in the UK from just £9,695 for the C4 1.4i 16v VT Coupé, thanks to the Company’s current cashback offer, which also provides savings of up to £2,200.

PRESS INFORMATION

FROM BINZ (UK) LTD.

Date: 10.04.06 embargo: immediate

Good Things Come In Small Packages

Binz UK has now added a three door, two-seater hearse to its line of Mercedes-Benz based hearse and limousine range. Though designed primarily to meet the requirements of funeral directors in Ireland, where it is more usual for the family to wish to bear, the vehicle has also found favour with some of the smaller UK firms. Despite its lack of bearer seats in the back the new hearse is no poor relation to Binz’s existing extended-wheelbase five door hearse.

Present is the same optically-clear curved glass that was such an innovation when introduced on the original Binz E-Class based models. This gives added prominence to floral tributes and casket, which rest on a burr walnut finish deck, softly lit by halogen lighting set into the solid roof above. The casket deck itself has rollers fitted, together with a full complement of brightwork, and includes a set of extra-width coffin stops.

The entire assembly will slide out from the rear of the hearse by up to one metre, to ease the task of shouldering the deceased, and when unloading flowers. Beneath this deck, Binz have managed to include a roomy stowage compartment accessible from both sides for trestles, lowering tapes, a collapsible trolley or even umbrellas.

"This new vehicle combines many design features and our reputation for customer service that have drawn users to our existing Mercedes-Benz based hearse and limousine models, in a more compact package. Though we expect demand to come mainly from Ireland, there are still a number of smaller UK funeral homes who have traditionally favoured a two seat hearse – and who may see in our new vehicle an opportunity to upgrade their fleet with a more contemporary design", says Binz UK sales director Kevin Smith.

Mechanically, the three door hearse is based upon the E-280, and is supplied to Elegance specification complete with air conditioning, Palma grey leather trim and tyre pressure monitoring. As with all Binz vehicles, peace of mind comes in the form of full Mercedes-Benz warranty and franchised dealer service support, backed by extensive off-the-shelf stocks of all unique-to-Binz components maintained at Binz UK’s own Reading headquarters.

Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain
19 April 2006

Ireland’s Mondello Park next for Porsche Carrera Cup GB

After a fantastic start to the new Porsche Carrera Cup GB season at Brands Hatch, the challenging Mondello Park circuit in Ireland is the next stop for the teams and drivers over the weekend of 22/23 April.

A fabulous line up for the Carrera Cup GB will make a fantastic spectacle in Ireland for rounds three and four, with 19 of the stunning new 997-model 911GT3 Cup cars expected to compete in a pair of races at the Irish track.

The new ‘Type 997’ version of the 911 GT3 Cup racer has drawn universal praise from the drivers, with more power, a sequential gearbox and enhanced aerodynamics, and the Carrera Cup lap record at Mondello is set to tumble by as much as two seconds a lap if conditions are good.

Also new for 2006 is the Pro-Am category, aimed at giving non-professional racers their own points and prize money rewards to chase. The move has proved very popular indeed, and a host of quick racers will be contesting this category within the overall race results.

2004 champion Richard Westbrook (Ipswich), racing for Cleveland’s Red Line Racing, grabbed the early championship lead with a fine double win at Brands Hatch. However, the opening races proved that Co Donegal's Damien Faulkner (driving for Leicestershire squad Team Parker Racing with SAS) and Witney’s Tim Harvey (in a car prepared by Motorbase Performance of Tonbridge) are right on Westbrook's pace - and this trio dominated the overall podium at Brands. Faulkner sees Mondello as very much 'his' track, so he will be determined to win again on home ground; he's already won five of the seven Carrera Cup races run at Mondello Park in the past.

Westbrook will miss the Mondello races while competing in the Porsche Supercup race supporting the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy, so his place will be taken by former F3 winner Danny Watts from Buckingham. Having raced in Carrera Cup Asia last year and tested the new ‘Type 997’ car through the winter, Watts is a first-class substitute for Westbrook.

Aiming to rival the big three will be Nottingham driver Jason Templeman (Team Parker Racing), Newmarket’s Michael Caine (Motorbase Performance), Mark Cole of Newbury (racing for Team RPM of Worcester), Londoner Richard Williams (who had an amazing Carrera Cup debut at Brands Hatch for IN2RACING, from Stratford upon Avon) and Mark Sumpter (Paragon) who takes over the car raced by Andy Purdie at Brands, as Purdie concentrates on university exams.

The Pro-Am category provided impressive racing at Brands as Nigel Rice from Beverley, East Yorkshire, and Jason Young (Oakham, Leicestershire) took the early victories for Red Line Racing. However, a gaggle of other drivers are all aiming for their slice of the pro-am points and prize money, including Manchester’s Mike Richards (IN2RACING), Phil Quaife of Tunbridge Wells (Motorbase Performance) and David Ashburn (Trackspeed), from London. Mike Richards will be new to the Mondello Park circuit, but showed at Brands that he is rapidly coming to terms with the 170mph Porsche!

So, the stage is set for some great racing as the 2006 Carrera Cup GB moves to Ireland. Faulkner is the local hero, but Harvey, Templeman, Caine, Watts and Cole will be among those aiming to give him a tough time!

Three years after its launch, a new, enhanced 2007 model Volvo XC90 will make its UK debut at the British International Motor Show in July, when it is also expected to arrive in Volvo showrooms.

Thanks to its great design with flexible, seven-seat interior and car-like driving characteristics, Volvo revolutionised the SUV market when the XC90 went on sale in 2003. It was an instant success and has rapidly become Volvo's best-selling model globally. Now, to enhance the XC90’s appeal further Volvo is introducing a new XC90 with more refinement, desirability and performance.

"We have elevated the sensation of luxury car comforts and are deliberately moving the XC90 upmarket in the premium segment with the new Volvo XC90," says Frederik Arp, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation. "We have listened closely to our customers and refined the XC90 to boost our competitiveness. We already have a winning design, but have introduced more sophisticated lines and materials and a better driving experience – but without compromising safety," continues Arp.

NEW ENGINES: V8 AND 3.2 SIX-CYLINDER

Following a high level of customer and media interest when Volvo announced its new V8 engine was available for the XC90 in other countries (with LHD), Volvo is delighted to confirm that the V8 will now be one of the new, premium range of engines available in the new Volvo XC90 in the UK (with RHD) together with Volvo’s new 3.2-litre straight-six engine recently launched in the all-new Volvo S80 saloon.

"With the new state-of-the-art six and eight-cylinder engines, the new Volvo XC90 will appeal to a far broader segment of customers and meet the increased demand for more performance and refinement," says Hans Wikman, Vice President Vehicle Line Large Cars, at Volvo Car Corporation.

The new V8 and in-line 3.2-litre six-cylinder engines offer 315PS with 440Nm of torque and 238PS with 320Nm of torque, respectively. The engine line-up for the new XC90 is completed with Volvo’s popular, five-cylinder D5 (185PS) turbodiesel that will continue to be available. The previous six-cylinder T6 (272PS) and five-cylinder 2.5T (210PS) engines are discontinued.

V8: 315PS and 440Nm of torque

This is Volvo’s first V8 engine. It is extremely refined with compact dimensions to enable it to be fitted transversely in the XC90 – like all Volvos – to help maintain good front crumple zones and leave more space for the passenger compartment.

Its compact design was achieved by positioning the cylinders at 60 degrees with a counter-rotating balancer shaft, rather than the conventional 90 degrees. In addition, all the ancillaries, such as the alternator, are fitted directly onto the engine itself without any space-stealing brackets. The starter motor is fitted above the transmission to save space, similarly, the exhaust camshafts are driven by secondary chains running off the inlet camshafts. The result is a V8 engine that is just 754mm long and 635mm wide which weighs just 190kg thanks to the block and cylinder head being cast in aluminium.

It is also one of the cleanest V8 engines on the market and meets the American ULEV II (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle, stage II) standard, which has been possible with the help of:

Four catalytic converters. Two of these are of close coupled catalyst type and fitted to one exhaust manifold each. The other two are installed under the car floor.

Lean air/fuel mixture for lower emissions at cold start.

Higher idling speed at cold start (about 1,250rpm), and optimised ignition for faster warming of the engine and catalytic converters.

The result is extremely low emissions before the catalytic converters are activated – which takes place just 15-20 seconds after the engine is started.

"It is during these 15-20 seconds that the majority of the emissions of harmful substances take place," says Jögen Sbensson, Volvo’s chief programme engineer.

No less than 370Nm of the torque is at the driver’s disposal from 2,000 rpm, with the total of 440Nm available at 3,900 rpm. This provides acceleration from 0-62mph in about seven seconds.

The sound of a V8 engine is also important to customers and is something Volvo has paid special attention to during the development of the engine. The resulting off-beat V8 ‘burble’ speaks for itself.

3.2-litre: 238PS and 320Nm of torque

The new 3.2-litre unit, built at Bridgend in Wales, is a modern unit, mostly made of aluminium with an efficient design that is more compact than Volvo’s five-cylinder engines as its ancillary components (such as power steering pump and air conditioning compressor) are neatly positioned behind the engine in the space above the transmission.

It achieves high performance with good fuel economy thanks to its valve train with both Variable Cam Timing (VCT) and Cam Profile Switching (CPS) on the intake side. With CPS, the intake valves can be lifted to different heights depending on engine revs and load – a lower lift for economical driving and a higher one for more power, almost creating two engines in one.

Both the V8 and 3.2-litre engines are only available with Volvo’s six-speed Geartronic transmission as standard (optional for the D5) and the latest All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system with Instant Traction.

EXTERIOR ELEGANCE

The new, more elegant exterior for the new XC90 has been achieved with a number of enhancements. These are most noticeable at the rear where there are redesigned lights which now emphasise the curves of the XC90’s shoulders, plus a wide, chrome detailing above the number plate, full-width rear scuff-plate and new bumper with more body colouring.

At the front there’s a new grille with more chrome and larger Volvo iron mark badge, plus bumpers with a greater degree of colour-coding. The new XC90 is also distinguished by new 18in alloy wheels and colour-coded side mouldings and door handles.

In addition, larger door mirrors become co-ordinated with the car’s colour and now incorporate the side indicator. There is also the added choice of a new pearl finish paint available – Shadow Blue – and two new Inscription colours, Electric Silver and White Pearl. Brushed aluminium roof rails are also available on higher trim levels.

INTERIOR LUXURY

"The changes we have made to the new Volvo XC90 can be regarded as precision tuning designed to increase the car’s appeal still further," says Hans Wikman. "Volvo wants to give the discerning XC90 customers a more luxurious, premium experience," he continued.

To achieve a higher quality feel, Volvo has introduced new materials and upholsteries, including Sovereign Hide soft leather with contrasting seam stitching and panels in perforated leather.

The centre console has been upgraded with a new display and aluminium-effect trim with a new choice of Sapele Wood also introduced, while for extra convenience when overtaking, a quick push of the indicator stalk automatically flashes the indicator three times.

Added convenience is also offered for the new XC90 by the new RTI (Road and Traffic information) satellite navigation system which now works from a hard-disk based system (instead of DVD) which more quickly calculates routes, is easier to use and provides additional information.

The standard High Performance audio system will now play CDs with music in MP3 and WMA formats and is equipped with an aux input to connect extra equipment, such as i-Pods and other MP3 players. The optional Premium Sound audio system is now one of the most advanced available and includes a digital class D amplifier from Alpine with ICE Power technology from Bang & Olufsen Powerhouse, plus Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound and loudspeakers from Dynaudio – producers of some of the world’s finest speakers.

New, ‘Active Bi-xenon’ headlights improve the driver’s view of the road ahead on dark twisty roads by moving by 15 degrees in either direction to follow the curves of the road. A microprocessor measures and analyses a number of parameters and optimises the light pattern to suit, and the system is automatically disabled when it is not needed during daylight hours.

Volvo will introduce the option of a Park Assist Camera to aid parking and give an improved view of the area behind when reversing as well as showing ‘help lines’ of the car’s planned path or track – which could also be especially useful for any customers reversing to hitch up a trailer. The wide-angled camera is designed to avoid excessive distortion and previews a large area via the car’s RTI navigation screen on the dashboard.

JAGUAR XJ TRAVELS MORE THAN 1,000 MILES ON ONE TANK OF FUEL

A Jaguar XJ saloon has travelled the length of the UK on just one tank of fuel – and then went on to top 1,000 miles in total.

The luxury XJ TDVi completed the trip from John O'Groat’s to Land’s End – a distance of 840 miles – with average fuel consumption of 53.5mpg*. Having reached Land’s End, the driver headed back to Jaguar's Midlands HQ without refuelling and reached a total of 1000.2 miles before the tank ran dry.

The outstanding achievement is testament to the XJ's inherent technological strengths, which include advanced aluminium body construction and a state-of-the-art, twin-turbocharged V6 diesel engine.

The XJ TDVi was standard and was even complete with satellite-navigation, CD auto-changer, Premium Sound and rear DVD screens.

The XJ TDVi Diesel boasts an average fuel consumption figure of 35mpg (8.1l/100km) combined cycle, 26.0mpg (10.8l/100km) Urban and 43.7mpg (6.5l/100km) Extra Urban and produces just 214g/km CO2, which is outstanding for a car offering the space, comfort and performance of the award-winning XJ. This also equals 29% in the Benefit In Kind tax category which means the XJ 2.7 TDVi has the lowest company car tax bill of any car in the luxury sector.

The XJ 2.7 TDVi has an insurance group of 15E, giving it a best-in-class rating ahead of the 18E rated Mercedes S 320 CDi and a two group improvement over the BMW and Audi equivalent models.

Geoff Cousins, UK MD, said: "We were always optimistic that the XJ Diesel could do this, but the figures we achieved were beyond our best expectations and show that the XJ 2.7 TDVi is a truly economical luxury car. Following the recent questions about the UK Government offering its ministers the choice of a Jaguar XJ Diesel, this proves how the XJ really is one of the most environmentally friendly cars in its class."

The XJ 2.7 TDVi costs from £43,995 on-the-road – petrol engines are also available.
