Mercedes SLR McLaren Due for a Major Update?
Date posted: 04-18-2006

STUTTGART — The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport says an update to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren may be coming as early as September. The publication says upgrades will include a power increase for its supercharged V8 from 626 to 650 hp DIN (German horsepower numbers), an updated interior, 19-inch wheels, a firmer suspension, a new braking system and increased weight savings. As a result of the modifications, the new SLR's 0-to-60-mph time is expected to improve from 3.8 to 3.6 seconds.

Rob Moran, a U.S. spokesman for Mercedes-Benz, would not confirm the Auto Motor und Sport report. "We'll reveal [it] when it's ready to go," he told Inside Line. "Drivetrain and powertrain are TBD." Moran said the company sold about 200 SLRs in the U.S. in 2005 and is "running about the same this year."

The 2006 SLR includes new trim options and exterior colors, including a blue model with a tan interior that made the rounds of the Los Angeles auto show, the Barrett-Jackson auction and the Chicago auto show. Moran reports that the blue SLR that had been on display at those events was "snapped up by a wealthy publisher" who remains unnamed and who spent about $460,000 on the vehicle.

What this means to you: Naturally, it's time to readjust our supercar dreams up one more notch.

Even though im not going to own one and the people that own them have probably less sense than money for sure, having a manual would just mean more of them in ditches.....

But agreed they should have a limited stint of stripped out versions i dont see the rich comfy looking types buying them :p

Well, I heard about it before from Autocar (http://www.autocarmagazine.com/News_Article.asp?NA_ID=219694)

Autocar

"Mercedes and McLaren haven’t stopped work on the SLR – as these spy shots show, they are aiming to unveil a more powerful version for the Paris show in September.

The new version will have an extra 24bhp from the supercharged 5.4-litre V8. Together with the improvements to the SLR’s transmission, the dash to 60mph will now apparently take 3.6sec, a reduction of 0.2sec, and 0-124mph will now take 10.2sec instead of 10.6sec.

That makes the hotter SLR faster than both the Porsche Carrera GT and the Lamborghini Murciélago.

The exterior has received styling tweaks designed to improve high-speed stability and smooth airflow under the car’s long body. Inside, the SLR has had a dose of extra carbonfibre as part of a weight-saving programme, which has reportedly saved 40kg.

Sources have told Autocar that just 150 hotter SLRs will be built before attention is turned to an open-top version of the McLaren-built car, scheduled for launch at next year’s Geneva show."

Heres an improved SLR ...

just kidding :D

Always thought the SLR was a bit poofy for a McLaren endorsed product ... too soft around the edges.

I believe it would be a lot better if they used the new full amg developed 6.3l v8 instead of the 5.4. that together with the new 7 speed auto and/or manual. As much wight savings as they can do, and of course a bettre interior, especially one that stands more out of the traditional mercedes theme!
that would make a serious contester to the brilliant 599 gtb!!

Give it more wood and leather, plastic doesn't fit. :)

And name it SLAMGR. :D :D

They should make a mid engined, shorter nosed version of the SLR.

Agreed, after the McLaren F1 the SLR seems seems a bit like oh, I dunno, Lotus making an MPV :D

At the very least they should make two versions... like an SLR AMG and and SLR Clubsport or summat. The AMG as a Mercedes with sat-nav, leather, inertia reels and so-forth with the Clubsport having carbon buckets, harnesses, maybe plastic windows - that kind of thing. It really needs to lose 150+ kilos.
