Hi there, lfb666;

Nice pictures of an old favourite of mine.
Some additional info; the figure (120) you quoted for bhp may have been correct for your country, in Europe the 914-6 was advertised with 110bhp. Same as the 911T, from which model it took its engine. Also, the 914 was called "VW-Porsche" over here. The best of the bunch, and very exotic was the 916; a fixed-roof version with a wider body and the 2,4litre 190bhp 'S'-engine. And then of course, there were the far-less desirable but underrated 914-4 models with 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0litre fourcylinder VW-engines (output between 80 - 100bhp). Of the 918 model (basically a 916 with an 8-cylinder racing engine) only one model existed; especially built as a birthday gift for dr. Porsche himself. I remember 914's being used as patrol cars by the Dutch national trafficpolice. A sight to remember.
Boy, I must be getting old....

World's greatest car. Ever. ;) Seriously though, if you guys want any specific information on 914s, I've got books, an owner's manual and a Haynes manual. Just in case anyone cares :)

Hansv, one small correction... there were 2 factory 914-8s made, one silver, and one red. Ferdinand Piech received the red one, and the silver one went to the company. Ferdinand's red one was sent to the museum after 10,000kms.

They both used a de-tuned version of the 908 race car's engine. The silver one was carburated and produced around 260hp. Dr.Piech's red one was fuel injected and it made around 300hp.

Pictures are of the two factory 914-8s.

I saw one today. Red with black roof, looked as good as new.

Very nice car :)

Hi there, Egg Nog;

Thanx for the info. Reading your post brought back the whole story and seeing the pictures explained the slip-up; the silver '918' having the innocent looks of a 914-6 (or even a 914-4) probably made me forget the little gem....

Doesn't the Fiat Bertone X 1/9 looks a bit alike the Porsche 914? It was introduced in the late 70's early 80's (not sure when).

The 914 doesn't really look like a X1/9, the X1/9 i think is the prettier car, but is also built like cardboard. 914's are all good, but i wouldn't go out and buy one tommorrow given the money, no offence to Egg nog, but there not my cup of tea.....

Not looking at the taillights I find them pretty similar. The shape is almost the same and both have pop up lights.

the X1/9 looks like a wedge from the front, while the 914 looks rounded and more soft, i fail to see the resemblence.....other than them both being targa tops.

Hi there, Niko FX;

I'd like to put it like this; the X1/9 is the prettier design, the 914 has more character (ugly is such a nasty word). I would go for character if i had the choice between these two.
By the way; the X1/9 was introduced in the early 1970's; that makes its desgin even more remarkable, I think.

Has everyone gone mad? :eek:

Peronally, I find the 914 to be the ugliest Porsche (if you can say that a Porsche is ugly) ever.

The best Porsches would definetly be like the 1956 Spider or the Beatle

The Beetle wasn't technically a Porsche, although Ferdinand Porsche designed a prototype of the Beetle.

Personally I think the 914 is quite a handsome car, looks very cool in black. I have a highly tuned 914/4 2.0 in Need For Speed - Porsche 2000 and is has put many a 911 to shame :D

Sure, it's not exactly sleek, but it's cool in a very different way from most other Porsches...

Just because I owned one doesn't mean that they look good :)

They look "unique", I'll leave it at that :)

Porsche 914 1969-1976

Introduced in 1969, the 914 was the result of a joint project between Porsche and Volkswagen. At Porsche, the 6-cylinder model served as the entry-level replacement for the 912 (http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame.php?file=car.php&carnum=1373). At Volkswagen, the 4-cylinder model served as a range-topping replacement for the Karmann Ghia (http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18605), and was badged as a Volkswagen-Porsche. During development, however, it was decided that both models would be sold as Porsches in America. The 914/6 was only marginally less expensive than the 911T, and sold poorly. The 914/4, however, was Porsche’s best-selling model throughout its production run.

The Porsche 914 was awarded Motor Trend’s 1970 Import Car of the Year.

A variety of engines were offered through the years. Top engine was a 2.0-liter flat-6 taken directly from the contemporary 911T, which put out 110 horsepower. It was offered in the 914/6 from the start but discontinued after 1972. From 1969 through 1973, a 1.7-liter flat-4 was offered with 80 horsepower. This engine was replaced by a 1.8-liter flat-4 with 76 horsepower in 1974. When the 914/6 was discontinued, a new 2.0-liter flat-4 with 95 horsepower was offered as a replacement. All 4-cylinders offered were based on Volkswagen engines.

The easiest way to identify the model year of a 914 is to examine the bumpers, although this method fails if the bumpers have been replaced. From 1969 to 1972, both bumpers were flat and could be had in chrome or painted metal. For 1973, the front bumper received a pair of horn-like black rubber bumper stops, and bumper stops were added to the rear bumper in 1974. In 1975 and 1976, both bumpers were rubber.

Total production was 3,351 for the 914/6, and more than 115,000 for all variants of the 4-cylinder model. Production ceased in 1976, and its place in the Porsche lineup was taken over by the 924 shortly thereafter (in the USA, this hole was very briefly filled by the 912E – a 911 body with the 2.0-liter flat-4 from the 914).

Pictured are two different 914's I saw recently in Charlottesville. The orange one is a Porsche 914 1.7 (likely a 1973 model based on the bumpers) that appears to have been in an accident in the past. The silver one is a Porsche 914 2.0 (likely a 1974, once again based on the bumpers) that is in much better shape.

I agree with Valli's opinion. I have looked at the pictures of it for a while and I still think the Porsche 914 is extremely ugly. That is only my opinion though.

The 914 has grown on me over the years. I used to think it was such an unusual design and not particularly attractive. More recently I find it functional and kind of cool, definitely different. As for the Fiat X1/9, it has to be the top car on my list of cars that I would love to own and drive if no one knew I owned or drove them!

Here's a 914 that kills me everytime at the autocross events. My cars the white one, so you can see why I get killed, but the 914 is still pretty quick. 5-speed, too.

i honestly don't really care about the looks, it's a lightwieght mid engined targa top coupe that costs much less than a lotus elan...

But Lotus Elan looks a lot better and it's lighter too. I'd personally prefer to buy an Elan, even if more expensive, than a 914.

yes, i would too, but the elan is worth a lot more on the classic market, to the point where it's not really worth getting one, imo. On the other hand a 914 is cheap, and you can do whatever you want with it because it's not a classic.

I do think it is a classic, and I'm sure the 914/6 (the worthy 914s in my opinion) aren't that cheap.
