Love the Bowell Nagari, one of the best muscle cars from the 70's IMHO, pity thay are so expensive and rare now:(

Well I must say it was a pleasure to meet up with these two fellow members :cool:

In a related highlight of the day, your dauntless UCP correspondents also ventured onto an ancient (1930s?) Sydney double-decker bus for a Hot Lap around the Eastern Creek race circuit. So there we were up in the top deck of this old AEC bus that was packed to capacity, and boy did it list alarmingly around the hairpins:eek: which obliged all of the upstairs passengers to lean right in through the corners, just like a motorcyclist, in an attempt of pure self-preservation

This bus ride included a truly 'believe it or not' moment wherein we overtook a string of Falcon GTs up the inside of Turn 4! :D



Unfortunately I arrived quite late after getting lost deep in the sticks of west Sydney, so only a few pics from me .. starting with this rare & pretty Jensen-bodied Austin A40 (import)

Continuing the ute theme is the befinned Chrysler Royal Wayfarer, this one an AP3 dating from 1960

The 'AP' designation stood for 'Australian Production' with this obviously being the 3rd and final model in its AU-only series. AP Chryslers debuted in 1957 and were a loose evolution of the old pre-1955 Canadian P-25 'Plodge' designs. Mopar lovers may recognise the mishmash of various bits and pieces adapted from later US models, including the grafted front clip and rear quarters that were an attempt to keep the styling ahem 'contemporary' as it struggled right through into 1962

For even higher levels of fin elevation, the earlier AP2 model famously carried an additional towering set of fibreglass fins atop the original steel units ..

[EDIT] note the beautiful and once-common 'Bug Deflector' aftermarket bonnet mascot with its translucent wings that supposedly swept aside insects from splotching onto your windscreen :lovit:

Btw I once owned a black AP3 V8 sedan (313cid polysphere) with the pushbutton auto :cool: they were an exceedingly tough and durable car and perfectly suited to the Ute application seen here

And for a curio this ratty 1968 'VE' Chrysler Valiant Regal with the 160hp Slant Six. Regals were a mid-range model and the VE series featured similar but not identical tail lights to 2nd gen Plymouth Barracudas

Look out :eek: it's our national automotive icon the redoubtable Goggomobile Dart (yes it's THE Dart!) with the 2 Stroke whirring away busily & blowing a customary plume of smoke. Not shown is a large and angry swarm of vintage scooters (Vespas & Lambrettas) which in 2 Stroke sympathy escorted the Goggo as it tootled by :D

Then a well presented Lloyd (Alexander?) wagon, and rear aspect of the tiny but utterly gorgeous Riley Imp

Next up is an immaculate 'HD' Holden Premier with the 3 litre I-6, their topline car from 1965. After Holden's wildly popular EH, the HD model initially sold well but was later deeply spurned by the public, who joked that HD stood for Highly Dangerous .. due to its narrow track-width and rolly polly handling. Further ridicule was provided by the HD's scalloped mudguard projections around the headlights, a style feature that offered little in the way of pedestrian safety - indeed these razor-sharp metal arcs were skeptically nicknamed as 'pedestrian slashers' and 'kidney scoops'

Also shown a green HT Holden Brougham of 1969. Again their most expensive model of the day and debuting Holden's rorty locally-designed 308cid V8 which replaced the lethargic Chev 307. Wheels magazine tested this new 308 Brougham (equipped with the standard Powerglide auto transmission) and reported they were now capable of an impressive 80 mph .. in first gear!

Last Holden shown is an orange second-gen LX-model Torana SS Hatchback. Again motivated by Holden's 5-Litre V8 (metric rename of 308cid) but riding on dinky 13" wheels, the Torana SS was a cheapish, compact & light car of Cortina size that dominated local motorsport and offered scintillating performance value in 1975

Now some Fords, opening with two 1965 Ford 'XP' Hardtops in Falcon, and Falcon Futura (luxury) trim. Quite distinct from early Falcons of the US or Argentina, including its bodywork with those Mercury Comet-sourced front panels and unique high-mounted tail lights - as exhibited by the baby-blue XP sedan visible behind in pic #1

This 1968 'XT' Falcon GT in 'Zircon Green' lacks only the original Lucas Flamethrower driving lights to be fully stock. Like the Torana previously posted, these Falcon XT GTs garnered respect in race and rally - almost winning the Bathurst 500 and best known for coming 3rd, 5th and 8th in the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon

Finally for me .. what else but the quintessential Aussie Disaster, that being the 1973 Leyland P-76 :rolleyes:

A very sympathetically restored and now super rare example of the hideous baseline Deluxe model with the great 4.4 litre all-alloy V8 (square bore/stroke) and h/d 4 speed manual, shown in 'Country Cream'. A torquey 192hp via a mundane 2-barrel carby might not sound too impressive, yet for perspective this large & clever V8 sedan weighs a mere 1206kg - which btw is lighter than many 4-cyl tiddlers made today, including any Ford Focus or VW Golf eg

Well I once owned a new SS in Commodore VK Group A form :p along with a very tidy second-hand LC Torana GTR XU-1 ..

But I'm sure you're enquiring about the Torana SS of which I admittedly have little experience - except by coincidence of having the use of a near-new LX SS manual Hatchback (an almost identical Mango unit but with 8" Hotwire mags instead of the aftermarket 7" Hotwires pictured) as a personal car-yard 'gopher' get-around for about 6 weeks in late 1975, when I worked for Dustings the now-defunct Holden dealer in Melbourne. Dustings are remembered as campaigning the L34 Torana which had that HUGE accident on Conrod Straight at Bathurst back in 1974

I've also been for a few terror-laden rides in 2nd-gen Torana V8s, including a repowered Chev 383 @ over 110 mph in a 35 zone ..

But yes the 5-Litre SS's were & still are light, brutally torquey and probably way overpowered, requiring finesse and concentration, lacking the easily accessible precision of earlier-gen XU-1s .. and yes despite this or more probably because of it, the good ones are an absolute gas to drive

IIRC the stock Torana SS wore 205x13 on tiddly 6" steel rims :eek:

Those old Holden V8 engines sounded magnificent with their really distinctive & barky exhaust note

When I was an apprentice diesel mechanic many years ago, one of the older mechanics has a genuine A9X white hatchback complete with drop tank and 14X10rear and 14X8 front Aunger Hotwires. It was truley sex on wheels. it also has the 2.6:1 moonshot diff. As our gogomobile mate says "it would be worth a pretty penny" now.

I am the proud owner of the SS Hatchback pictured. It's certainly torquey, and great fun to drive (except in the wet!). The steering's a bit heavy though, but I'm told that replacing the steering box with one from a UC is the way to go.

I'm glad that someone thought to photograph it and put it onto this site.

Huge power and rear wheel drive is never fun in the wet, unless you're a masochist... ;)

Some of the Sierra Cosworths pictured had the same problems, causing some very nasty surprises for would-be ram-raiders nicking the cars and trying to be rally drivers.

Welcome to the site, that's one clean muscle car :) just watched Mad Max, I'm very jealous of some of the muscle cars you have out there... Chris, please can you send me a Mustang in RHD? :(

I am the proud owner of the SS Hatchback pictured. It's certainly torquey, and great fun to drive (except in the wet!). The steering's a bit heavy though, but I'm told that replacing the steering box with one from a UC is the way to go.

I'm glad that someone thought to photograph it and put it onto this site.

Hi Davo, welcome to UCP and glad you didn't mind my photo of your beastie :cool: And that you might agree with my drive-sentiments?

From memory your car looked to be a tidy & well-loved unit, congratulations & btw I envy you. Even 30 years later I still recall how heavy the tiller was on that dealer-car I had use of. Parking it was OMG, so to paraphrase Maggie Thatcher: 'this car's not for turning'

Power steering was a rare factory option on certain Toranas and could be the way to go imho, even if you had to adapt it from a Commodore

I remember 'my' LX SS (the Mango dealer car mentioned) was one of the transitional-model LXs and unusually equipped with a stalk-mounted headlight flasher, but not the HX/UC multi-function wiper stalk as it still had the usual wiper-switch on the dash. I also remember doing a right-hand turn in that SS from one busy divided hwy onto another (Burwood rd to North rd, Melbourne) and flooring the throttle from a mere rolling-idle, with clutch already engaged. This instantly resulted in major LSD wheelspin and screaming 180+ spinout, virtually within a cars length & blocking the intersection, then being stared down by a bevy of frowning motorists :D

Gee those cars have balls, and BIG ones. I was literally doing under 10mph at the time :o No one can dislike a car that'll do that!

I purchased the vehicle just last Easter, from the original owner. It had always been garaged, so was in excellent nick.

And it does have one of the transitional dipper switch/headlight flasher stalks on the steering column.
