I'm going to put this up for a poll in a few weeks . . . but what should I include and why.

For your info my three favourite engines are;

 YZF R1 (Motorbike, no it won't be included); See it rev, hear the noise!!!
 LS6 from the new corvette; Lightweight compact + powerful
:D RB26DETT from the skyline; The Playstation generation know why !!!

I know what I might expect, prove me wrong . . . .

Well Ferrari's F130 installed in the 333 SP. It is the best, cleanest sounding racing engine I have ever heard. Not one cough or bad sound in it, pure joy to listen to!

It is the V12, 627 hp, of McLaren F1 made by BMW M-Power...

In the photo is the F1 LM's engine...

im not a fan of beemers, but the straight six in the m3 has got to be one of the best in the world, the only engine i can think of to rival it is the boxer six in the new gt3 or maybe the 360 ferrari V8

no doubt the BRM 1,5 V16 from the early fifties, you will never forget that one.

Next could be the the V10's by Ferrari and McLaren.

Henk, your sun raised you well ! :D

I personally LOVE the BRM sound 2.
For people who don't know what sound this car produced:

I'll pass on the compliment, although he selected the 333SP. (I could not help it). The sound captions of the V16 are also available on a CD that was given free to Motorsport readers. Nick Mason (owner of a V16) talks with Simon Taylor about his cars and a few other nice sound are available (250GTO, 512S). Title of the CD is Sounds of Goodwood.

thanks for the link Thadon, I had never heard this sound before, but it's just brilliant. I think my neighbours now also know what a BRM V16 sounds like :D

An other engine (sound) that I love is the Porsche 12 cilinder from the 917K, if you've seen the movie LeMans you probably know what I mean. lovely sound

on this site: http://www.racecar.co.uk/goodwoodpressday2000/
are some more sound files from passing racing classics like the 917K, the 250 GTO and the Batmobile, there are also lots of pictures of them.

From the mass produced engines, the one I like the most is the VWAG 4cyl 1.8 turbo. It's powerfull, economical and reliable.

From the supercars and exotics, the engine I like the most is the V12 6.2 of the Murciélago. With loads of torque and hp, it can make any car amazingly fast.

The sound of the '60s and '70s big-block V8 muscle-cars I like the most. A 7-litre V8 I would like top have in the poll :)

I guess a rolling start of CANAM cars (the current Supersport Series) might be your ultimate pleasure. Try to visit one at Spa or the Nurburgring

Jaguar 4.2 XK-engine (it's quite reliable and it's been put in many sports cars)
Coventry Climax (could race it while still cold)
Ford 289 cu.in. V8
Ferrari 312
and of course the greatest sounding ever: British Racing Monster V16 !!!!!!!

We have a car museum 160k's from the city that has a flat 16 (Indy I think) racing car, two flat 8's on top of each other! Didn't run cool and was hard to tune with half the intakes upsidedown. I'll try and get a photo - it's not a joke.

The 4.2 was a great engine - had a friend in the 70's with an 'S' type Jag (actually his Dad owned it and we would pinch it when he was out of town :D) - it would smoke the tyres all the way thru 1st gear - loved it.

The modified car is parked outside IKEA . . . from my parts the common opinion is that IKEA takes great designs, then modifies them for mass production ruining the design in the process.

Someone has taken a great jag . . .

Maybe it's just me :D

Anyway there are some great engine choices in here; am going to start the poll June 2nd, so there's some time yet . . .

I notice there are no environmentally friendly engines here

henk4
05-22-2003, 05:17 AM
An environmentally accepted engine will make neither noise nor smoke. I could propose the Peugeot/Citroen HDI with smoke filter, it runs great, consumes little and does not pollute.

Kudosdude
05-22-2003, 05:42 AM
Don't get me wrong - I was just making a point about the fact that car enthusiasts don't seem to find environmental engines exciting as some of the other options available. . .

henk4
05-22-2003, 05:55 AM
I did not get you wrong, just look at the Peugeot Spades concept (the red one). I have 2 litre version, slightly tweaked and still giving an incredible mileage (always over 1000 km with a 65 litre tank), but not yet with the filter. Anyway with the predominance of USA visitors to this site, I am afraid that the word environment is not spelled in capitals (if correctly spelled at all).

The V8´s sound is amazing, even more when it´s a stock car V8...
and the Porsche´s flat six is also music to my ears....

Seeing as I said "on the front", it's quite likely that I saw one on the front. Of course, there's actually no lotus badge, it just looks like one in the picture.

Unfortunately, like many of us, I missed the deep reference to Ikea :)

EDIT: Ozi, I didn't say that I saw a Lotus Badge in the Jag picture! :) I was referring to what looked like one on the picture of the Koenig 8-series...

As usual Henke you are in this forum to prove your lack of experience in the automotive world and it is borne out in your inexhaustible defence of the diesel engine. Your claims of being the only environmentally educated member here, are disproved by your knowledge of only one subject - diesel engines. Some facts - just for you - diesel engine emissions pose a greater health risk to people than petrol/gasoline emissions, a health risk 6 to 7 times greater!. An 'Ames' mutagenicity test to determine the genotoxic effects of petrol/gasoline verses diesel emissions results in revertants (changed/mutated cells) 6 to 7 times greater for diesel emissions than petrol/gasoline per 1,000 miles. As a father of an asthmatic car-fanatic I can only shake my head in disgust at the thousands of (late model 4 to 8 years old) diesels vehicles (Mercs, Toyota 4WD's etc) polluting the atmosphere belching black smoke and crap from their exhausts. My only course of action is to pass these death traps as quickly as possible, which of course is very easy as I drive a manual PETROL ENGINED Wrangler.:p

OZExige - You may be correct in your opinion of diesel (even environmentalists can't agree so lets leave it at this) . . .
but please don't slam other members opinions - NOT IN THIS THREAD

Anyway - back to the thread - one week till I post the poll . . .

thanks to all that have commented thus far.

It was not a 'SLAM' as you described, nor was it an opinion, it is the facts regarding the dangers of diesel emissions because of the large quantities of particulate matter that is exhausted.

henk4
05-27-2003, 11:56 PM
If OZexige had read my post carefully, and knew what is going on, then he might have grasped that I was talking about the HDI engine with FAP (Filtre Anti Particles). Currently Peugeot is the only diesel engine maker producing this filter, and I have seen convincing (German) tests where a road use of about 50,000 km's was simulated, for a conventional Mercedes E class and the then new Peugeot 607. The Mercedes produced about three litre bottles of particles. while the Peugeot managed to fill just the bottom of one bottle. You may still consider that to be too much but I think the reduction is certainly in the same order of magnitude as the 6-7 factor OZ is mentioning that was found in the Australian test.
In other posts I noticed that he is fond of Audi's. It may have escaped him that Audi just released the latest diesel version of the A8, of which the specs are really impressive.
I will stick to my opinion that in every day use a modern diesel engine is much more preferable over a petrol engined car.

I like pushrod V8's in general, the Chevy 350 or Ford 302/351W in particular. Damn near unbrakeable, infinitely modifiable, ridiculously easy to work on, almost every mehcanic has had experience with them, cheap to find and build, and they sound and perform great.

Mine is the Honda RA167-E, used in 1987 by the Williams F1 team. 1.5 Liter V6 twin turbocharged and making somewhere in the area of 900-1000 hp. The Tag-Porsche engines of that same here were cool too, used by McLaren. In fact the turbo era of F1 was just awesome.
