My best guess would be an artists impression of what the PS3 might look like, way before release...Notice the UMD drive? Hints that it might be what people wanted in the PS3 before official pics were released.

It's not the PS4, it's an old mock-up of the PS3.

That first picture is actually very old, IIRC a little before PSP was launched (hence the umd drive). And as TIK mentioned, it is what someone thought PS3 might look like.

If I remember right, there were quite a few various mockups

kind of a silly moup though, other mock ups featured a less volumetric frame

VERY old guess at what the PS3 was going to look like. Some believed it was the PS3.

UMD discs were for the PSP. I'm guessing that they suspected that the PS3 might be able to play UMD discs also (ie being compatable with all of Sony's products).

That's a really good idea. Apparently Sony are making a UMD converter for normal TVs...

Yeah, it sounds stupid. CD's are compatable with many devices, why would they make UMD discs just for PSP's? Since it's so popular anyway, I'm guessing we'll be seeing more devices that can play UMD's also.

No, UMDs will die with the PSP. Movie distributers have already stopped supporting UMD movies and Sony (in their infinate wisdom) haven't announced any plans for a unit to play UMDs straight into your TV, so they will be just the realm of the PSP for the forseeable future. Sony want people to go to Blu-Ray to replace their DVD players, so that's what they're concentrating on.

You're right, it's an obscure format. At least Memory Stick, however inconvenient (compared to SD cards etc.), can be used elsewhere- cameras, PSP, and the PS3 in the future. But the UMD's stay with the PSP and unless they get something out fast that integrates it into something else it'll go like you said.
