I can't believe they'll dare to produce it
check this out :

I don't think this kind of cars is made to have a convertible version

Well Bentley haven't done badly with the Arnage Convertible (sp?). Some people like wind in their hair ... it's a great car and I think people will actually lap it up, even if it's not your typical car for taking the top off of.

Makes about as much sense as the CLS

how far back does that guy have his seat?

Why wouldn't they make the CL into a convertible? Seeing as it's essentially a coupe version of the S class, it'd make so much more sense. And I can't imagine that thing having very good body rigidity

About as far back as I have mine.

Isn't the SL meant to cover this area of the market?

Does the SL have 4 doors and 4 seats? :p

You're two seats short. Actually, the CL is supposed to do that, a four seater with cabriolet roof.

What next? A convertible E500 Estate?

ADDED: Or is that E550 these days?

Look closer and you'll see the illustrated convertible has four doors. So essentially it's a decapitated S-class sedan, and not from the CL two-door

Mercedes hasn't offered that bodystyle in a long time - IIRC their last drop-top sedan was the big 600 Laundelet (spl?)

The attached Bob Jane Landaulet in the 2nd link is a local car, now owned by Lindsay Fox. When near new it was on the cover & mini-tested by Modern Motor magazine. Check the quality of the interior woodwork on these cars, its just spectacular!

Hope they come out with a CLS coupe and convertible too. And a wagon for sure.

There was never such a car :D If you meant the Arnage Drophead Coupe, than it was only a prototype of the Azure, which is a 2-door, so no reason to compare it to ans S-class convertible.

A few pics that may be of interest here:

Well Bentley is comming with their Flying Spur Convertible next year so this could be a good competitor. Now wait for BMW to come with a 7-series Convertible :p

You've not seen the GTC? It might only be the 2-door version... but it's nice.

And by the way- with those '65 AMG wheels and no roof, that Maybach looks awesome!! A shame it would literally cost the Earth to buy...

The CLS is the most beautiful Mercedes of the last decade.

Even over the SL? Hmmm... opinion, I guess :)

However, it is also the most pointless... worked for Mercedes though.

Absolutely. I find the SL a too extravagant design. The previous generation of the SL was more classy and timeless. But this are only personal opinions. Though mine is worth much more than yours, obviously! :D

Waitwaitwait.

You find the SL, a delicate piece of beautiful design, preferable to some jumped-up E-Class which looks like a banana split + chrome?

I knew you Portuguese were odd... but... dude :D

I want to say right now that I totally don't agree with that trend :p

People who eat tea at 5 are generally little Englanders. I can say right now that I don't- 8:30-10:00 are my normal dining hours!

As for the bacon... well... mine isn't greasy, it's just amazing ;)

Also a pity that they used a crappy photochop for their "proffesional" picture, where the idiot left THE TOP OF THE ORIGINAL ROOF IN THE PICTURE. I can't believe they use pictures of such low standards...

Hmm no that's not the reason why I got this new avatar, which is not horrible at all. the pink S-Class had arabic plates, btw. Don't think french people are that tasteless. :p (Yeah, I know, my avatar....)
