View Full Version : Subaru Impreza STi MY 2008

lightweight
02-08-2007, 12:03 PM
New images of the upcoming Subaru STi have surfaced online, revealing the car’s new styling ahead of its debut at the New York Auto Show in April. Key changes for the new model are the introduction of the hatch body-style, and the new front-end styling that forgoes the unpopular airplane inspired grille treatment. All Impreza models, including the STi, will be roughly 130mm shorter than the current sedan, but will be 50mm wider overall.

The new STi will carry over the familiar 2.0L turbocharged boxer engine in most markets, however, the US will likely get a 2.5L version. An all-new 2.5L engine is currently being developed, which will deliver substantially more juice than the 300hp that’s expected from the 2.0L mill. Instead of increasing the top-end power, engineers have focused on improving the power delivery characteristics of the new range. Expect a much flatter torque curve and more oomph lower in the rev range.

Other mechanical changes include some major revisions so the symmetrical AWD system, including a modified Driver’s Control Centre Differential. The new Impreza is also expected to receive a new rear multi-link suspension set-up that should improve both the car’s handling and stability.

Considering it's a hatchback, the rear big wing makes it look stupid. Personally, I'm much more interested in the mainstream versions.

i don't think the front on this photoshop is accurate. The twin radiator intakes are not on the test cars and the upper grille is also different.

its nice to see that the Evo X will get DSG but its a shame that it will still only be available as a sedan, it would be nice to have that in the STi instead. For the STi, its nice to see a hatch, but its a shame to no longer have the proper wagon (or WRX at all for that matter).

I think the chopper threw it in just for good measure. How would a wing as big as that actually help aerodynamically?

The wing doesnt look much bigger than the wing on the STi now. Many of the hatch-back style WRC cars have similar high mounted multi plane wings.

The Skoda's wing would work nicely on a hatchback Evo STi. I personally love those big rally car wings.

Sure, but it looks like it was chopped directly from a current STI. I doubt the hatch STI will have such an ungainly wing, although I could be wrong.

I'd like to have a better look at this one. Looks like a boisterous version of the Legacy. Would make for a good family resemblance.

In terms of sales, especially in Europe and concerning the mainstream versions this is true. The Lancer Evo might be very well known but I doubt the regular Lancer saloon sells at all in Europe...

You are correct there (that Andreas Zapatinas worked for Alfa before coming to Subaru). The Tribeca snout is basically a flipped and slightly widened version of the trademark Alfa Romeo snout (and it makes it much uglier).

And I thought it was going to be a hard choice between EVO X and new STi. Subaru just made my decision a whole lot easier.

I don't mind that first pic, the headlight/grille/chrome bits work really well together. But good the rest sucks badly. I can understand the need for a proper 5dr hatch, but it's no good if it's hideous.

god damn that is an ugly pile of trash. They've slowly ruined the design from its incarnation back in 94(aus). I thought the bugeye and the existing model were fugly but this just takes it to another level. I really hope the evo destroys it in sales and subi go back to a more aggresive design.

Awww come on you guys are overeacting itsw the current trend in all auto motive desings to err towards conservative designs better off being innofensive rather then agressive and off putting to the mainstream.

While not the best looking vehicle I was thinking of buying a new subaru and id defintly own one (especially if it mainatians its udner au 40k price tag). The car has gone bland to try and to appeal to more of the market but i do agree there is a large number of changes on the car i dont like eg wagon only (excluding american market who will get the sedan) and haveing an actoual frame around the window is werid for subaru its a feature i like on my liberty.

Also they are getting a new rear suspension a twin wish bone set up this time and apprently they have removed the front sub frame (apprently an improvment but i some how doubt it) and also according to the info i got the new wrx is getting the quicker stearing ratio of the current sti also its going to start of life with a 5 speed man or 4 speed auto (still)

And in other bad new its going to be some 23 kilos heavier then a current wagon wrx also all the engine are getting minor changes and most are seeing similar peak torque and hp figures at lower rpms.

Is the wrx a winner probably not is the base model a winner could be cheap conservative and copying alot of currently succsesfull cars well have to wait and see on this one.

yeah I mentioned that earlier and its a triat i really liked about my libery :( its a shame to see it go but it reduces alot of wind noise that develops over the years (mines a 97 and traveling fast gets pretty noisy even with all the windows up) and its apprently more ridgid and safer.

Some of the chops I've seen point to the next-gen STi having the same sense of blunt purpose as the Renault Clio V6. If they can go in that direction, they can't go wrong.

The chops showing a Focus WRC-style wing poking out of the rear hatch along with a rooftop spoiler are clearly the product of someone without even a schoolboy's understanding of aerodymamics.

THEN, They brought the propeller nosed versions which, guess what. I love, but, I'm impartial to the MY05 and Propeller nose. I've found no reason to trade my angry-looking 2004 STi for a new one. They just smack of the increasing, newfangled trend towards the 'shit! It's been two years and sales aren't meeting expectations! FACELIFT!' school of automotive design.

The Peter Stevens-penned facelift for 2004 with the subtle hint of Ferrari 166 mustache remains a high point, ITQHO, in Subaru design (see attached pictures. The dirty black one is mine, and that's me making the stupid face).

Ugly? Yes, imo it's part of Subaru's plan to make these little hooligans a little less immediately recognizable. Having replaced the Civic as the most ticketable import, this new generic looking profile will help the new scooby blend... then again, maybe they just screwed up.

Their stats are worth while and so is the news but they winge and moan about the most mundane things like falcons rear seat apparently being small? Ive been in plenty the rear seats are not small.

I just don't think their opinons are valid most of the time their a motoring mag that reviews cars they are supposed to bitch but i don't care if the cup holders wont hold a McDonald's cup i can figure that pout myself i want to know how it handles and how much its costs as opposed to paragraphs writing about useless crap. thats all :)

also the fact that they dont like the arial on the VE commedores because when you go over 220km/h (or whatever the rediculous amount was....cant remember sorry) it hits the back window!! its nice to know that happens but still i dont need half a page of it.....:p

I was hoping Subaru would at least try to make the WRX radical looking but, looks do not really matter, Performance is the most important. Well for me at least. The battle between the EVO and the WRX as been one of my favourite battles in the whole Auto Industry. I can not wait to see them face each other. I favour the EVO.

Subaru had such a nice thing going with what I thought was their established trademark grill.http://img.drive.com.au/drive_images/Editorial/2005/10/18/18sub_leadimage.jpg

The first thing this new car reminded me of was something cheap, like a hyundai.

Yeah, I figured that Subaru would stick with the new trademark grille, but I guess they think a lot of people thought it was copying off of Alfa Romeo or not very well liked?

The problem is, people saw the Tribeca and were scared off Subaru's showrooms...

That's really too bad because that vehicle was supposed to generate a lot more sales, wasn't it?

yeah. the problem is that it looked like over-sculpted ass.

The best design, IMHO, is simple shapes, done beautifully.

it just looked garish. if you look at the facelift model of the Tribeca they've normaled it up.

Also, who's genius idea was it to leave the B9 in before Tribeca in the first place? I'm glad they finally changed it to just Tribeca.

Well they seem to be a distant third to Ford a Citroen, so it isn't surprising that a top driver might consider switching teams.

What is up with the Japanese teams? Subaru is underperforming and Mitsubishi picked up and left and just recently announced they are done for good. :(

My uneducated guess is that probably Subaru's budget is significantly lower that tha of Citroen and lower than that of Ford.

With virtually no opposition on rallyes that last for about 10 minutes which let you restart if you crash into a tree?

Maybe...

It was an exageration for the shortening of rallies that has taken over the years and the stupid superally system (which I don't know if they use anymore). He is a good driver, but then it's difficult to compare to the all time greats like Vatanen, Kankkunen, Sainz, Blomqvist, Mikkola, Rohrl and the likes when the conditions are so different.
