What car would you buy for $20 000. You can't spend money on tuning it up.
Just buying the original model.

If I had $20,000, I'll get myself a Dodge SRT-4 Turbo (2.4 liter Turbo Charged Engine, 230 h.p., 250 lb.-ft. of torque, and 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds!!) :D

I also agree with Byron, I would definitely get the Dodge SRT-4, especially since it now has an LSD.

$20,000 Aus is £8,200
So you can't get anything new.

Hmmm. Second hand then.
I saw a rather nice stock R32 GTR for £8000.
Renault Clio Williams 3 £4000
A 350i Wedge (TVR) ~£6000

My personal choice would be a TVR S3 or, pushing the budget a bit, V8S. :D

For £20,000 though, the world is your oyster. (excluding running costs and insurance)

Most probably a used BMW, but I could also buy something cheaper and simply save the money for another time.

If I had $20,000 USD, I'd buy this 914 and a Mk2 Toyota MR2 Turbo. MR2 for the daily driver, and the 914-8 to annihilate basically anything else on four wheels :). On weekends. ;)

These are both from a local classifieds magazine:

1972 PORSCHE 914, all alum hi-perf V8, 5 spd, stainless headers, 916 body panels, Carrol Shelby Mini Europa 15" rims, VR50 Yokohamas, Performance suspension & brks, runs & handles awesome! Black on black. $13,500.

91 TOYOTA MR2 Turbo, 135,000 kms, 5 spd, blk, lthr, a/c, new brks & tires, well maint, no accidents, perf body & cond $12,900 obo.

So.... $13,500 + $12,900 = $26,400 CAD.... factor in the current exchange rate and it comes up as $19 886.94 USD. Perfect!

Hm well let me think........you can get a new Mojo 2 (first pic) for £6,000 or a new AMG WLR (second pic) for £8,000.

Hard to pass up on the SRT-4, but my money would probably go toward a Cooper S.

Used, it'd have to be a mint E30 M3 or M6 or 3.0CS or E34 M5 or 2002 Turbo. Maybe an early '80s 911 SC.

I'd probably drop it on the Turbo.

My knowlege of all the little kit/ locost cars around is quite limited.
I did think of the Mojo, but I thought it would have been more than that.

I'll still stick with the TreVoR though.

To be accurate a Locost would only cost you 250 pounds. ( well it would need to be adjusted for inflation now )

Ron Champion published his book on building the LoCost and it included building the chassis AND suspension arms using 1" square tubing. Dead cheap.

When you say the "locost market", it's more accurate to say the Lotus 7 replica market as many of them provide ready-bulit chassis - Hood, Tiger et al.

Yeah i have that book! There are a lot of kits now that have fresh new styling that are cheap, not many but it is growing!
