Yeah. It sucks.

For some reason, I find that video extremely entertaining.

Spoken like a true Scot... ACH!

Matra, you ever see the video of the WRC car hit the sheep? I saw it once years ago while my old man was watching some rallying and I have looked for it since - any idea where I can catch it?

Don't remember sheep ... will think about it and see if I do tomorrow ( I usually dream about sheep anyway :) )

Oh man, poor cow, but I had to laugh. That is too funny. The one with the sheep was too key. The car stopped DEAD in it's tracks and the sheep went airborne a short while. Man I remember it cracking the hell out of me seeing it again in slow mo!

Well, my math teacher said that it isn't worth stopping for small animals (i.e. dogs, cats, squirrels, the occasional chicken :p), because it isn't worth swerving onto oncoming traffic or the car next to you or pedestrians. And I think it's a very fair idea. However, he also said that there's a limit to that rule- for anything with four legs higher than your windshield, try your best to avoid (i.e. a cow, moose, deer, etc). :D

What was the damage to the car afterwards? Are there any pictures circulating?

When my dad had his last Vectra, we were travelling on an A-class road doing about 80mph when we saw a bird fly out of the trees at the side of the road and land in the middle of our lane not far in front of us. Dad braked and managed to hit it doing 50mph. Luckily there was no damage to the car (we expected some from the sound it made), but I think the bird was decapitated by the front splitter.

How fast were you going when you hit the chicken? An RX-8's lower than a Vectra, and a chicken bigger than whatever it was we hit so I'd expect the potential for damage to be greater.

We had this with a rabbit once. He ran onto the motorway and kept still, gazing around... My dad speeded up and after we hit it, put it in a plastic bag in the back. We had some plastic bent and broken, but nothing serious... I must say it tasted good ! :)

Animals really are stupid... I nearly ran over a squirrel the other day that saw me, stopped dead, and decided to stay where it was... it's not like I was speeding, 5mph in a car park isn't hard to escape from! So I moved my wheels and just drove over the top of it. A shame the person behind me wasn't so humane.

Could have been a lot worse, good thing it wasn't something bigger like an elephant. An elephant now that would suck.

something like that happened to my brother. He was driving and hit a bird somehow and the bird got stuck inside the front dumper somewhere in the G35. WHen we put it in the garage, it smelled like something rotting. had to clean it out good.

I'd hate to see the damage there! Someone crawl YouTube for a video of some dude bouncing off an elephant :p

And coolieman- similar thing happened to my best mate. He was driving down a nice, windy B-road here, and something that appeared to be a loaf of bread struck the windscreen and bounced off. As there wasn't a baker around for about 6 miles, we stopped and had a look. Some idiot seagull managed not only to slam into his car, but slammed into a tree straight afterwards. We left it at that.

Yes, an elephant would suck, although a large camel or a moose is almost as bad.

My "worst" animal hit was a cat on a motorway.
Doing 90 at night, saw it coming. Braked, moved as much as I dared at that speed but still clipped it.
Then heard a thump.......thump........thump........thump......
Thought soemthing was broke, so pulled over to the side to inspect.
The sound was the cats head hitting the bulkhead as it was being spun aroudn having wrapped itself round the driveshaft :(
Thankfully had a plastic bag in the car to get it off with. yuk.

IIRC 1997 Rally New Zealand, Carlos Sainz hit a sheep in his works Escort WRC in one of the last stages. As result he lost the lead and Kenneth Eriksson won instead in an Impreza WRC.

Dad hit a badger once at 80, at night, about a half mile from home......only damage was that the plastic mesh in the lower grille un-clipped itself.....:p

Sorry to hear about the accident :p

My grandad hit a deer once in a Saab 900 and it totally smashed up the front of his car, so badly, it would no longer move and hat to be towed away.
and last summer, Mum & I went out for a blast accross GoodWood in teh Mazda, car in front hit a big birdie, detached its head and we got all the feathers in through the sunroof...

Did the crash happen at around 5 minutes? I didn't really notice the sheep, but I saw that he turned his wipers on at that point. There really was no way to avoid the sheep anyway.

Well it was just over a crest so he didn't see it until it was too late. Later in the video he says that he was going 180-185km/h, and that they were lucky to not have a much worse crash.

A crow hit my car
must of been drunk or something
flew to the middle of the road
I slowed down
Then it flew at me, hit my windshield and dropped dead behind
No damage except the need to clean up a bunch red stuff and feathers

Cov, you are a master. I dream of electronic sheep running on blades, what do you dream about?

Matra, I was so psyched that this was the sheep contact that I had seen before, but it unfotunately was not. The sheep Accident I saw was after a sharp turn through trees, them BAM! Right on the hood of the car - car dead - sheep dead / airborne.
