I know more or less all of you worship the ford mustang because its one of the greatest cars ever made. My favourite Mustangs are the 1960-70 versions such as the Shelby Mustang GT500, possibly the best mustang but not the most well known. Check out the photos , add your own if you wish, and tell us what you think.

The GT500 is one of the cars that pop into my head when I think 'muscle car'. Alongside the Dodge Charger and Chevvy Corvette of course :)

Looks awesome, sounds amazing, and goes like a bat outta Hell!

Best Mustang IMHO is the '65 Shelby GT350 ... it would out-accelerate, out-handle and looks much better (I know its subjective :) ) the GT500.

Mind if I add it to your poll?

There are far too many great mustangs. One of my faves is the 69 KR-1 I think it was called, unless I am mistaken it had a 428 CJ and was bad in black...

You gotta watch where you step though, the Gt500 in the movie is hardly a real GT500...they used something like 14 cars for the movie, and none had the proper engine. In fact, every car you see is a 67 Fastback with a body kit. The real shelby's just played the engine note. Fantastic car nontheless.

That black stang is gorgeous and exactly the one i had in mind, but I think it's a 69 (the 68 had a fastback with air scoops on the c pillar) and I thought it was a 428 cobrajet rather than a hemi...is that true or am i wrong?

That particular one must be a hemi then, b/c unless I'm mistaken(I don't proffess to be a Mustang Historian by any means) that model was the 429 Cobra Jet. It was an OHC engine that they introduced to help with emissions standards.

My appologies, that one was a 428 not 429, my bad.

im with you there on that thought. the 306hp 289 wouldve been a real gem and i believe the 65/66 GT350 was a fair bit lighter than the 67/68 GT500, as well as the better weight balance

The OHC was the cammer engine which was a race engine that found its way into a lot of models which im sure was based on the fe series of blocks (332,352,390,427,428scj) but shared little in relation with the 427 it shared displacement with....it was a race engine not ment to give a dman about emissions...as for the hemi remark the cobra jet models had a semi hemi design much like the clevland and much the same as chryslers wedge engine design...more compact then a hemi and got better emissions....
On the cammer information my father went to bed so my info on that is not complete...

yeah the 427 cammer was part of the FE engine family. i think they were pretty similar to the big blocks but i dont know where the differences came, whether they were better suited to racing as i believe the 428 and 429 were big blocks whilst the 427 was an FE.......either way im not 100% sure, i suppose because of how much manufacturers didnt tell us during the american muscle car period we'll never know

I think its got the GT500 in looks too.

Years ago I almost bought a '64 ½ Mustang ('64 first yr stateside, '64 ½ in Canada), problem was when I had a friend of the family (a mechanic) took a look at it and found barely any frame left ... not the best car for an aspiring 18 yr old to buy. Thinking back it was kinda cool ... (oxidized) red exterior, (ripped and worn) black vinyl interior - buckets and console, key in the dash not on the column and I remember it was a straight six ... 200 CID I think. could have been a sweet ride .... where are these deals now? :(

i think the extra weight in the 67 model came from making the body, specifically the front end, big enough to support the big block motor. the 66 model wasnt wide enough through the strut towers but ive seen 1200kg for the 66 and 1700kg for the 67 so thats a fairly big difference if what ive seen is the truth

well around here, not specifically mustangs, but you can get 60's model Falcon's in fairly good condition for around about the right price, and they can be turned into pretty good cars. if you want any proff just look in the users ride section at Falcon500's car
