I just read in the Eindhoven Daily, that DAF Trucks is stopping the production an development of Dakar engines. DAF gave as a reason that the future environment and fuel economy regulations already take a lot of time from the engine department. Developing and producing race engines isn't a primary goal for the company.
In recent years DAF supplied teams 'De Rooy' and 'Beckx' with engines. Both teams have entered a temporary registration for the 2008 Dakar rally. Team De Rooy stated they still want to race with two trucks, team Beckx probably only uses one of their two trucks.
