Front wheel drive cars
rear wheel drive cars
four wheel drive cars

I'm a rear-drive guy myself. AWD is nice in the snowbelt, but seeing as how people drove for years in snowy climates with RWD, I don't see why I couldn't.

RWD>AWD>FWD
4WD is a class of its own.

Hmm...I would go in this order of preference: (keep in mind I also drive a truck)

4x4 (since it is basically AWD and RWD combined into one)
AWD
RWD
FWD

AWD - Fastest in the real world
RWD - Fastest on a Track / Racing
FWD - Weak

I think it's very inconvenient to reverse and slide/drift, so RWD > FWD imo.
4x4 is great too. Help is just the push off a butten away after an off.

We've got a lot of snow in Norway ;)

100hp, 1200kg

FWD owns AWD and RWD.

With those stats AWD is out of the question, but please explain why FWD is better that RWD...

It's true that an Integra Type R definitely can handle well, but FWD is inherently bad for a racing car. It doesn't make sense- the same wheels that steer the car power it as well.

Mid engine RWD is probably the best setup for a racing car, so in this thread's terms, RWD is best, followed by 4WD.

I have a question,

I was reading about the Audi Quatro system, And i could not figure it out. Is it 4wd or AWD? and how does it work. I just couldn't understand it and where it saves the weight as compared to other 4wd or AWD, whichever it is.

I think it's AWD because it shifts power to the wheels that need it, although I'm not completely sure myself.

Yup.

Sure the GTI and the Mini are great fun, but anyone who's driven all three with tell you that the 130i (RWD) is on a new level.

a whole new level of shit... original mini cooper > 130i in every concievable way.

I think he's refering to the new 'mini' as opposed to the awesome original.

AWD= all 4 wheels driven all the time.
4WD= you can switch between 2 or 4 wheel drive

I havent driven any decent rwd cars yet but lots of fwd and a few awd cars.
I also think in the real world awd is faster.
So my choice will be:

AWD
RWD
FWD

In a good practical car I'd take AWD. But for a car meant for any kind of fun.......RWD, hands down. I've never seen anything appealing about FWD, even when I owned one.

FWD is great if your car aint too heavy, aint too powerful. it's safe as well.

For those that hadn't had a great drive in a FWD, go try a civic type r.

All in all, it's not about which wheel drives the car determines everything, and may i say, if weren't at the limits, the wheels that drives the cars had actually minimal impact on driving pleasure, many other stuffs contributes towards the handling and balancing and performance of the cars.

I think maybe i would want rwd for my second fun weekend car, but for everyday stability and security i quite like the gip of my quattro. I do sort of agree that the advanatge isnt always evident but it becomes more useful in winter.

RWD by far

cmcpokey

i think they both have their merits. i love the fwd on my mini, but it has to be an exceptionally set up fwd to truly be engaging. rwd is great as well, but you also have to be a tad more careful in the wet. awd it great for traction, but i havent driven one that i enjoy the dynamics of.

so i guess i would echo jediali's sentiments. fwd for the week, and rwd for the weekend.

Yeah. I like this statement.

FWD = Weekdays
RWD = Weekends

BMW is getting there asses handed over to them in WTCC this year... by fwd cars and some of them Diesel... and they are ~300bhp cars.

so in certain racing conditions it is better to have fwd.

But oi get your point, If i could buy a car now, it would be a rwd though, balanced, front wheels stear and back wheels push.

Errm, if BMW are "getting there[sic] asses handed over to them" in the WTCC then how do you explain the fact that Andy Priaulx has just secured his third consecutive WTCC title for BMW in Macau at the weekend, sealing the constructor's title for BMW in the process?

I dunno about that, I heard the newest Civic Type R (JDM, not the English made one) is pretty darn good.

RWD Best all-rounder best fun easiest to dial in for all occasions and has great driver feedback you can't beat it.
If you have under steer you can use the rear to overcome it. I love going into long winding corners and drifting wide with under steer then giving the throttle a kick and gripping in hard with the rear and steering the car around it with the rear and feeling the rear stepping every so slightly it feels amazing.

I haven't driven a AWD i have 4wd's but have seen and herd many storys about AWD.

I have driven many FWD cars in my opinion your never going to have that fun or seat of your pants feel in one, Overpower it and good by handling and hello torque steer.
