Oi !

I scored a cool new job. I am hired to drive a Nissan van 8 hours a day since Saturday. Botlek stores is the name of the company, it is a store with stuff for sea men. We pick up the men from their ships and drive them to the shop and back. In doing so we drive through the refineries at walking speed, put up our cool orange helmets and enter the ships (sometimes really nice ones :)), head for the bridge and gather the men. Officially the ships themselves are considered abroad.

I am absolutely dead now, after 9 hours and 700 km. Loving it though, usually nice guys and some nice conversations.. The smelly drunk Russian fella's were less pleasant though, especially when they started singing some Queen song on the radio out loud.. Thank god the windows could be opened against the worst smell.

Ah well. I am off to bed !

careful... sea men have a tendency to stain your pants.

(in some serious, you should call them sailors to prevent the sillyness that has ensued.)

So you're a white van man now, Drakkie? thats scary.

Hope it works out for you - 8 hours sitting down doing nothing but driving can be a pain in the ass. so can working with all those seamen.

To be precise a colour formerly known as white with orange stickers :p It is pretty heavy I noticed, especially since the clutch and everything goes a little heavier on these things.. Thankfully you get the chance to walk onto a ship at times (= free exercise climbing all kinds of ladders).

sea-men is what you mean hopefully :p As I notcied some are annoying, like the drunk Ukranian guys. Some French from the Ardour,Marseille were only saying one word, Merde.. Merde this, merde that.. damn..

Inside the store we have a system of paying first, then we put it away for the customs guy and when we get the ok-phonecall they can have it, with everybody of the ship at the same time. Some don't seem to understand they have to wait. Every 2 minutes another guy from the same ship comes to beg for a cigarette or their wodka.. :o

What is the job you do exactly ? I assume in the tiny Amsterdam port ?

Working in one of the world's largest ports really does not make you any more special as you are. Yes you are special, special like Corky in Life Goes On.

Studying in the Netherlands is crap. Shortage on teachers; so if one teacher is ill, half you schoolweek will drop out.

Plus most of the time teachers don't know crap, and all they seem to do the entire day is sending e-mails to each other.

That's why I am trying to get an internship outside the Netherlands.

Same here. The only difference is our teachers are actually skilled. This semester I have 12 hours of lessons, of which 2 are utterly useless. Self-study counts for all the other hours, I do it in half the time suggested. Last year I had 32 hours + same self study. Basically I have Monday, Wednesday and Friday free. To fill the time I am now making a new website for the study (paid in extra points) and organise excursions across Europe with two others. Nedcar in december, Paris and surroundings february, April Munich and VDT in between them. And now the job, makes a very full week which is rather enjoyable and financially great too.

My internship is hopefully also somewhere else. I have been spamming and networking for a good month now. It's actually quite hard to get into a big company. Porsche had an interesting offer (assistant-project manager of the Panamera) but it was nowhere near financially possible :o I'll see where I end up. A company from Eindhoven also offered me a job, but I prefer abroad.

To be honest, i detest the current way my country is, in many ways and I don't feel at home at all ! In Germany for example, I feel at home and welcome. I like the attitude much more and have got quite some friends there.
