View Full Version : Best Driver in Your Nation, and your Favourite Driver

This is just a thread I created thinking about drivers from different nations - I hope it stirs some debate and discussion. Select who you think is the best driver(s) from your nation, and include your favourite driver regardless of nation as well.

My nation being Canada, I'd have to say that Gilles Villeneuve is probably the best driver this country has ever seen and is my favourite driver. Gilles tenacity, aggressive driving nature, and results in a car that wasn't as good as the competition are what make him a personal favourite.

His son Jacques gets honourable mention for actually managing to win an F1 WDC, winning the Indianapolis 500, and winning a Cart championship.

Little known Canadian racing fact: John Duff (originally born in China) won the 1924 24 Hours of Le Mans (the second running of the race) In a Bentley 3-Litre Sport. He raced the Bentley after personally appealing to W.O. Bentley in 1923 to run a Bentley at Le Mans. In fact, Duff was the first entrant in the first Le Mans in 1923, but he only managed 4th place in that race. Cool story though!

My favourite current driver is Kimi Raikonnen.

Now what do you guys have to say?

At the moment, couldn't tell u, but
All Time - Peter Brock (RIP)
Rally - Chris Atkinson
A1 - Will Power
Nascar - Marcos Ambrose ( i think)

and current is Gronholm

Hmm ... too difficult to pick :(
Innes Ireland, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, McNish, Franchitti, Dumfries, Coulthard (just squeezing in)
Jimmy McRae, COLIN McRae, Louse-Aitken Walker
Bob McIntyre - first ever 100mph lap of the IoM TT course

DIfficult. I'm tied on Jim and Jackie in racing as they each faced adversity, were tenacious and astoundingly natural racers across multiple disciplines.
Colin HAS to have it in rallying

Current driver ...
Controversially Dario Franchitti, didn't hit the pinnacle he deserved perhaps but shown himself a capable driver in US race disciplines. Mainly coz looking forward to seeing how he does in NASCAR. He'll be at home "rubbing" having driven aroudn our streets :)

Dario did a great this season in Indy Car and I'm surprised that he is leaving for NASCAR. Do you happen to know why he decided to do that? Is there more money in it or something? Got any ideas?

Well, he's always said he raced for the challenge. I did read an article while he was thinking of the move him say that NASCAR would be different for him.
But - he's a Scot - he was on annual contracts and NASCAR was offering a multi-year deal. he's "getting on" so ... yeah I think it's money :)

The best portugese driver must be Pedro Lamy. He had a brif stint in Formula 1 during the nineties starting over 30 grandprix. Since then he moved to Fia GT where he has won a few races and class wins at Le Mans. He is currently one of the drivers of the peogeot 908 in the european le mans series.

My Favorite driver at the moment must be... raikonen. im just so happy he finally clinched an F1 title after so many years of frustration at McLren.

Ron Fellows could also be considered the best Canadian driver, did lots of great work for the Corvettes at Le Mans.

Im not sure of my favourite drvier now but if I had to pick one it'd be Mcnish.

i expected villenueve to be posted by i guy who has him in his avatar :p

the best driver will be undoubtly robert kubica, probably of all times, maybe sobieslaw zasada achieved somewhat similar prestige

sadly, i don't like any drivers from my country - zasada's old and grumpy, kubica's just a machine that doesn't talk logically (like more human stig), and rally drivers like kosciuszko, holowczyc or kulig are just average but treat themself as kind of legends and stuff, and that's enough not to like them. from all the drivers - that'll be raikkonen as for now

Oh, he talks very logically. That's the problem. It's 100% logic and reason, 0% emotions or feelings. Which of course supports your point that he's like a machine. Let's only hope it's a winning machine :)

Touring cars, I'd suggest Lowndes, Brock was the peoples champ and noone who saw it will ever forget him drifting the Commodore across the top of the hill at bathurst in the rain at 170 k's with his arm on the window sill as if he was off for a blat down to the local shops for some milk... I think Lowndesy is well on his way to being the current generations Brocky. All, time greatest aus driver? Id say Brock... His ability to win in just about any machine you care to mention, or on any track was something special, from rallycross to around australia trials he was on his game right from the start. I guess the only other aussie driver even close to being as good as PB, didnt come from aus at all. If brock wasnt the best australian driver, then I'd have to say Jim Richards, and he's a kiwi... Cant help bad luck I suppose. All time greatest driver? Either Jim Clark or M. Schumacher but heres hoping one day that short list will include M. Webber.

Since I'm from New Zealand, I'll talk about NZ rather than the country I currently live in.
Best all time driver - its between Denis Hulme (1967 World Formula One Champion), Bruce McLaren (founder of the McLaren team, 1966 Le Mans winner and held the record as the youngest driver ever to win a grand prix until Alonso took it a few years ago), Chris Amon (1966 Le Mans winner and ex Ferrari F1 driver) and Jim Richards (7 times Bathurst 1000 winner, 4 times Australian Touring Car champion and many other championships in various classes).
I'll nominate Hulme as NZ's best ever despite the quality of all the guys above.
Richards is the best touring car driver from NZ.
Of the current drivers, Scott Dixon - 2003 IRL champion is the standout driver. However Johnny Reid (making a name for himself in A1 Grand Prix) and Matt Halliday (a front runner in Champ Car earlier this year) are excellent drivers. And from V8 Supercars, we have current stars Greg Murphy and Jason Richards and past star Paul Radisich (who is also a former World Touring Car Champion).

For a small country (population 4.2 million), New Zealand has an outstanding record of producing great racing drivers.

My current favourite drivers (now that Jim Richards has retired), for what its worth are actually Aussie drivers - Mark Webber, Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander.

This is a tough one... Peter perfect is definatly the best touring car driver around... but thats cos he always had the best bit of kit under him, dont get me wrong was a fantastic strearer but he also had some help... as to his rallying attempts, i am not so convinced. i have had a fair bit to do with the outback rally here in Aus and to put it basically... he was a car breaker.

Rally home grown would be Possum Bourne and all time is Carlos Sainz

F1 is Mark Whebber.... home grown and favourite

i would also like to add in there "Gentleman" Jim Richards and his son Steven (yes Kiwi's but we will claim them :p)

'Best Russian driver' sounds almost like a joke nowadays. Think it's gonna be...eeerrr... 1911 Targa Florio 3rd place - Vasiliy Soldatenkov (was registered in race protocols as Basilio Soldatenkoff). Ahem... was so long ago... Also 1907 1st place in Verona Sprint (Brasier 100 CV) at 5km and 1km distances.
And last years I think Roman Rusinov was not so bad in FIA GT and Mikhail Aleshin in GP2...though not so good either.

And I don't know who's my favorite driver :p in F1 it's Kimi...:D

^ now that you said it, i recall we (Poles) had some really good drivers back in Grand Prix days... i remember there was one woman starting in female races and she had really good time at Lvov GP (then Poland) - one of the most difficult races in motorworld, attracting all worldwide known stars. she won it in her class in her very own bugatti, one of seven that was in poland before the war - aahh, those were the times... continuing that story, there was only one bugatti after the WWII - T57 voll & ruhrbeck, which you can read good story about on ucp database. unfortunately it was sold in 60's, or maybe it's a good thing cause not that long time ago one guy who now lives on the other side of the street where once the garage with tabencki's cars was, said that it's now owned by his son and it is said he's a bit... mad? anyways since this spring we've got one bugatti back :D brand new veyron in wroclaw, gossip tells another one being order in warsaw. now that was a bit of off topic, sorry :D

EDIT: Remembered more successful Russian driver - Igor Trubetskoi.
In May, 1948 Trubetskoi with Biondetti won Targa Florio in Ferrari 166 Spider Corsa, which in fact belonged to Igor. It was Ferrari's first-ever attempt in major international competitions. 600 miles were done in 12h 12m. Later this month Trubetskoi started in Monaco GP in Ferrari, but retired after lap 58. But actually he left Russia after 1917 and went in France, so he wasn't 100% Russian driver.
BTW, Ferrari's first victory abroad was committed in Igor's car. In 1948 Clemente Biondetti won Stockholm GP driving it.

Your nation has one of the richest racing histories in the world! So what if most of it is domestic - some of those guys in NASCAR or Indy would probably have been about as good in F1 if they took it up instead of racing in the States. As for Americans on the world stage, look at Mario Andretti! He was stellar!

As for favorite driver, I'd like to see Kovalainen do well. Also Kubica and Nico Rosberg rank high in my books.

Best of all?

- Walter Röhrl -

Won the Monte Carlo Rallye, in an Opel Commodore, without brakes.
Took an 8min lead in the Portugal Rallye, at one stage, in foggy conditions.
After he retired from Rallye, he went to US, to drive the Audi 200 IMSA-GTO. First time ever, in american race history, that one driver, took a ful lap advantage, of the second placed driver in a race.
Stormed in record time Pikes Peak.

I've read a little story in one forum, a short while ago.
Röhrl is 60 years old, was testing for Porsche, on the old Nürburgring, an Ferrari 599 Fiorano. While driving round the Ring, he saw another 599 in black, with dark windows, at high speed. He put his food down and closed up, passed the other and finished the lap. In the Paddock, the other guy, put the window down, yelling "are you crazy".
Michael Schumacher was all the time a bad looser.
Sounds nice

I grew up as an Andretti fan.

But I'd like to bring up the talents of Paul Newman, far from the best but he may be the best actor/driver combo. And he drove a Z. I'd take his talents over say those of Steve McQueen.

Coming from Australia... it is very hard to say because many different drivers win our touring car races... but I might go for an older driver in terms of Jack Brabham, Peter Brock, Alan Jones and Vern Schuppan.

Brabham: of course, he won a couple of world championships in F1...
Jones: He, of course won the F1 championship in 1980
Brock: He won the Bathurst 1000 (a track climbing a mountain (Mount Panorama) and going down again for those who don't know) an amazing 9 times!
Schuppan: Unexpected winner of the 1983 Le Mans 24 hours...

And Monty Burns, we need to talk about why Murph is a "dickhead"...

I have to disagree with a vast majority of australians on this one brock is well known for winning one race 9 times there are many more who have won the majority of races in a year more then his 3 times.

Many years ago I said the best touring car driver ever had was a kiwi (jim richards) and I still stand by that but on the australian front the lines are blurred and very hard to define with many worthwhile champions Bowe,Skaife,Seton,Johnson, Lowndes, Ambrose, Bond and so on and so forth and nowdays even moffat can qualify on a technicality.

Out of that impressive list I dont think many can match the metoric rise of lowndes and wel also cant forget lowndes has a likely almost 20 years left to fill his cv up. As far as raw tallent goes and what may well be a suprise to most I will say coling bond is worth mentoning he could drive anything anywhere and spent a large portion of his career either on drity (rally) of in ailing machineary (alfas and early attempts in the caltex serierrs that was guestimated some 60 hp down on johnson/bowes). Part of the reason why I cite these 2 is because there are no 2 drivers in our domestic catigory I have the big guns say had so much tallent and raw ability and it shows when these 2 have the equipment they can top nearly anyone.

Another tough call would have to be our f1 entrants, admitadly not being a huge fan of f1 its makes it hard but id say jones while he had less sucsess im thinking that in all liklyhood his time was more difficult.

Ambrose is the most sucsessful driver we have had in NASCAR as most of our other aussies didnt stay in long enough and some wore out their welcome (dick Johnson) even if unintentionly. And last but not least we have had more then one Brabbahm in world catigorys and while many didnt emulate jacks sucsess in f1 many have found comfterble positions in many other catigorys particarly 24 hour racing and sportscar events.

i would also like to add in there "Gentleman" Jim Richards and his son Steven (yes Kiwi's but we will claim them :p)

Richos son much like garth tander and rick kelly previously have been prone to fits of bad luck often caused by poor decisions and lack of common sense (particarly rick when in 03 he earned the name crash bandicoot) with a large smattering of bad luck helping the rest of their woes along.

Also particarly evident in both richo and garth are fits of rage which cause them to punt off other drivers and ill quote john bowe in 04 i beleive "Gaths a good bloke untill you get him in a car then he becomes a D**khead!" although granted they asked the queastion very prematurly. There was also and incident when richo was trailing ingall and he precieved (the evidence ont he timers said a diffrent story) that he was being held up when eventually he screamed "I cant F**kingtake this anymore!" and proceded to drill ingall in the dieing laps spinning him with less then 5 laps to go and was dubbed a racing incident because of it happening in the last 5 laps. Good thing is these 2 seem to have grown out of it....rick im not so sure of.

His tallent was never in queastion he has the personlity of a light switch either its on or its off. Although I will comment there are many better ways of saying it.

And you should know that current paul morris is as popular as hemmaroids nowdays with us (too many stuff ups as a back marker with front running car tyvm) which is a shame considering his supertouring days.

Smith, Norman Leslie (1890 - 1958) (http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A110677b.htm)

I cant see why you wouldent Jum Ruchards was defintly one of the best if not the best to grace our tracks and he also mentored the like of skaife and seton so he has some kind of tallent. And murph when the limelights on him its usually for the wrong reasons and involves a chicked object and alot of nasty words, Richo jr on the other hand is so boring his goal was to come 5th every race and intended on winning the series that way and was dubbed the accumulater. The idea had merit it could of well won him the championship if it wasnt for some badluck but how boring could you get?

Well that first line is also very similar to somthing Dick Johnson said "i dont know what the currant drivers are complaining about back in my day we never had power stearing or even fuel injection and our cars where hardly as safe as they are now" -DJ talking about paul radasichs air filtering system in 01
