I'm going to school to get my Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license, in Aircraft Maintenance Technology. I'll probably get my avionics degree after that as well.

I have a BA in criminal justice. I would like to steer my career into being a specialist for the government. I was thinking about school saftey and disaster planning management. I have sat on the board during a few schools crisis planning, though, only as a volunteer.

Good to see people with directions :). I see such apathy today in school leavers around here, its ashame if there isnt something to keep some people interested and motivated to achieve the best they can and do a job they enjoy. (im a mechanical engineer)

I'm doing a safety major myself. One of our projects involved disaster management for school buildings. Very interesting since you have to look at laws, practical problems and of course costs. We constanlty faced the same problem: the school board kept saying: "but who is going to pay for all this? We never had an emergency situation so we don't need all the fancy alarm systems". That's one of the tricky parts of the job, but also what is makes it so much fun.

But at the moment I'm doing this safety study and I also am planning to become a voluntary fire-fighter. This way I can get my basic degree fire fighting and do my own study. This could clear my way to the fire department academy.

After highschool I went to college majoring in Technology Education(computer/woodshop/autoshop teacher). I went for one semester and decided it wasn't for me. I dropped out and started working at an autobody shop, restoration shop, machine shop and a race track. Within 10 years I hope to have my own restoration shop and/or be the manager of the local drag track.

i had no idea what i wanted to do during highschool and after i graduated. i just worked a bit while doing part time uni courses. i ended up in vet science because it's entertaining and i can't stand the idea of doing accounting or something. i don't even think i could take a desk job. the price i pay is the difficulty of the course though..

I am really into physics and math. I am leaning towards mechanical engineering right now, but i've never really done it being 15 years old. It just looks and sounds fun and interesting. What are some other fields in this area? I'd appreciate someone's insight.

I would definitely find some more information about the field you are looking to go into. Talk with a guidance counselor, go to an engineering firm and ask for an internship, etc just to find out what it's like. Spending thousands of dollars to go to college and then finding out you don't like it is a huge waste.

If youre into Physics and Math then Mechanical Engineering is gonna be your kinda thing. I do agree with Johnny though, you need to look into it before you jump into it, if you dont it can cost mad money, not to mention destroy your morale...

Good thread.

I've always felt comfortable with words. I got my bachelor of arts degree in writing from the University of Central Arkansas (laugh if you need to).

Since graduation I've delivered construction supplies at the helm of a grand 1998 Chevy ton pickup with the coil-per-cylinder 400 cubic inch V8, sold insurance for a shitty scam company called American Income Life, detailed cars, picked up mentally retarded kids up and put them on and off a school bus and counted school bus parts at Conway's International plant.

For over a year and a half I've been the city reporter for Conway, Arkansas' Log Cabin Democrat daily newspaper (TheCabin.net ˇˇ Log Cabin Democrat of Conway, Arkansas (http://www.thecabin.net)).

It's been a long, treacherous road to actually using my degree. Now that I'm writing for a living I don't ever intend to let it slip away. I've been quietly rabbiting away to pad my resumé with automotive journalism the whole time.

TheCabin.net ˇˇ Bang for the buck: Today's cheapest cars tested, reviewed 09/10/07 (http://www.thecabin.net/stories/091007/loc_0910070003.shtml)

TheCabin.net ˇˇ Altima Coupe and Chevy Cobalt reviewed 01/08/08 (http://thecabin.net/stories/010808/loc_0108080004.shtml)

TheCabin.net ˇˇ Civic Si, Scion tC good cars for less then $25K 01/07/08 (http://www.thecabin.net/stories/010708/loc_0107080005.shtml)

soon, I shall get my last few letters of recommendation, from several English professors, the University of Central Arkansas Archivist, my editor and, hopefully, Uncle Lu Hardin, the President of UCA and apply to Coventry University in England.

Then I'll have my Master's Degree in Automotive and International Journalism, and the 'Quail will be INTERCONTINENTAL.

I can write about cars like Evel Knievel used to ride a stripped-down Harley Sportser. I will be to automotive journalism what Harry Houdini was to straight jackets and Atilla was to Elephants.

I'll be a mogul's mogul. I'll make Jeremy Clarkson look like Ross Perot and I'll put Max Power out of business. I'll rise like a grim albatross before the weak-kneed, obsequious hacks who pratt on endlessly about how much they like piano-black trim and dual-zone climate control and put them all in a dank shadow.

Trust me, folks, this Hillbilly's gonna write about CARS, and he won't be comfortable until he's in the Eagle's seat.

It's more of an Arts/Design course than an engineering course, the particular one I'm doing.

It just requires attention to detail and originality I can't quite come up with yet. But I'm getting better.

i knew what i want to do all my life. drive fast cars, attend on races and take all the joy of it :) so basically, i'll be an automotive journalist.

i've been writing articles since being 14. first for the internet, but not some tacky blogs but one of the biggest polish motorisation vortals, in fact i've been still writing regurarly for them till i set off my own website.

on the beginning of 2007 i had my first article in print. it was some kind of news for ClassicAuto magazine, the leading polish mag concerning classical motorisation. since december i'm in regular staff. the biggest article i wrote was six pages long about Legenda a passione auction in may. i co-written an article about ferrari 308 GTBi from warsaw, we were riding it on abandoned airstrip and stuff... cool thing.

in geneva i accidentaly met some polish guy i haven't heard before of, and it turned out that he's a chief editor of one polish moto classfieds newspaper. and only a month later i started writing to them, i've got three A3 pages in every issue about news in motorworld and motorsports, plus sometimes some advice articles on technical/market issues. i know it's not any prestige, and i don't particurarly enjoy it, but i've got money from it and it's setting my name as a good brand. remember poland has vigorous market of second-hand cars, so actually those magazines are even more popular than those focusing on new ones :p plus, they're paying for me for going to geneva show/IAA frankfurt/paris. and, as i'll hopefully make a driving licence next month, i'll be receiving press cars for the tests.

during IAA frankfurt i met one of my automotive journalism idols, he's a Pole so you won't know him. he's driven awesome cars, like maybach exelero, many ferraris, lambos, bentleys to name a few. he made more than 10 000 kms on few different merc SLRs. so i've been talking with him for about an hour, during which he revealed me that he's preparing polish edition of top gear mag, which still was a secret then. eventually, month later he invited me to his office and we set a deal and now i'm part of the team preparing polish top gear mag :) first issue is just about to be published - 14th february

in april i'm finishing my school. i'm hoping to move to warsaw this summer to be nearer all the business and where oppurtunities are far greater than here. i want to study something like politics or european relations because i enjoy geography most of all subjects, but i'm not expecting anything from it - i just take it up for the sake of graduating

I'm a certified set constructer/props maker/anything to do with Art Department (in films)/stagehand/whatever I bullshit my way into in regards to stage and film.

I'm a professional geek. I'll fix your PC/server/whatever. Sometimes leaping on the most interesting thing to come up after leaving school doesn't go anywhere, but it's usually worth doing anyway. I've not used my high school results whatsoever, but that hasn't stopped me. Just find what you can do and use it as a stepping stone to get to where you wanna be.

I would enjoy physics so much more if I had a decent teacher. My teacher sucks balls.

The math isn't hard in physics. Its just that she can't get the concepts across. I'm able to do calculus level math decently well, so physics math isn't the problem with me. It's the damn concept.

Liberation Theology is typically a Catholic thing. It is written, advocated and encouraged in the Bible to use violence, if necessary, to liberate the oppressed from the oppressor. Thats pretty much it in a nutshell, however it doesnt support doing so from the top, ie. the rich give money to the poor, its more about spilling the same blood in the same mud. Its the building blocks of the Zapatista movement in Mexico, which is probably the largest revolution of my lifetime...

a fair amount of maths is required for engineering

Engineering will use much of a maths course syllabus but will sooner put it to use wheras a maths course might move onto proofs.

I have attatched the course list for the degree that I done and as you can see the courses which say analysis and methods or maths are maths based, and that knowledge is used in ther subjects (fluids, dynamics, thermo, etc.) Furthermore the last couple of years might involve some advanced theory eg optimisation (bisection method and beyond), discrete materials (thats continuum mechanics) and perhaps statistics (imprtant for safety - monto carlo etc). The additional MA courses I done where for my management studies bits.
