The camera is pointing towards the sun, coming from the south. I wouldn't exactly that back-lighting ;) I dunno the proper english for what it is (guess counter-light), but I think you get the point !

The object is lit from behind, hence the commonly used term back-lit. English is a language of its own and does not only feature terms that are literally translated from Dutch. Idiot is an exception.

Great photo Drakkie.

Thanks. Perhaps interesting to know that this tug was also involved in the beaching of the Zhen Hua 10 recently.

Thank you, it was indeed a very pleasant surprise to my eyes when looking through the batch. Recently I've been taking tonnes of pictures on the maritime subject and might get a permit to photograph at some terminals as well soon, should be interesting..

Congratulations on picking on a guy who only submitted a picture in a photography competition. I understand you don't like him, but as moderators (and even the man behind this website) I would expect a better behavior. My two cents.

Which is exactly why I visit rarely nowadays (except problems with the law then). It's a great community, but the highly hostile attitude of the mods and leading team makes it very unwelcoming for new and old members. Basically nothing except what they are used to is good. A little bit more of an open focus wouldn't harm anyone. Benefit of the doubt principle and not slashing anyone's head off when it sticks above the corn field.

Oh come on. I just explained what the proper terminology for the type of shot was. It's Mister-Know-It-All's attitude that has given this thread a bit of turn. If he for once just accepted that he was wrong there would have been no problem at all. Yet instead he comes back and throws that ridiculous smiley in my face without thinking twice about my post. All I ask is for him to think before he posts.

Haha, I don't mind you guys picking on him as much as you want when he makes stupid comments (i.e. snapping poor cat's necks) but in this particular case he didn't do anything. The mods are just ridiculing his work in this thread.

I also think that's his problem. I had nothing against what you told him before the idiot part. That was unnecessary.

I ask of the mods to act exactly the same as they would if they were not moderators. Only when they use their additional powers should they make the most sensible of decisions.

That was after the smiley. As soon he uses that in a post directed to me, it's gloves off. But again that example was just used to emphasize my point and to explain why he made his mistake.

Oh come on. I just explained what the proper terminology for the type of shot was.

Which I later replied to in a friendly manner, after your correction. Small mistake on my side, friendly thanks back for correcting me. What do I do wrong here ?

It's Mister-Know-It-All's attitude that has given this thread a bit of turn.

I am sorry, but you have this attitude quite severely. It's about time you realised that.

If he for once just accepted that he was wrong there would have been no problem at all.

I did. And if you dislike smilies so much, why don't you delete them from the board altoghether ? Quite odd to see your smiley hatred is always focused on one person using them. You can hardly call 1 smiley excessive use or anything.

Yet instead he comes back and throws that ridiculous smiley in my face without thinking twice about my post.

The ridiculous smiley will not be featured on ucp in the future I guess then ?

All I ask is for him to think before he posts.

Point taken and will be done. May I ask you for a favor as well then ? Try and envision how you are seen by many. I know I am certainly not alone in this view, without calling names, but you honestly seem like a pretty arrogant person that always knows best. How do you think that comes across when you accuse others of being arrogant ? Think about it please and try to do the same as me, improve yourself every do.

I think it'd be wise to continue this discussion elsewhere now and leave the thread to it's originally intended goal.

Rather Unfortunately it was a scorcher of a day (32 degrees centigrade) with overhead sunlight (the photo was taken at about 2:30pm).

When I get a Chance i'm going to go back there at night. Parliament House (the coathanger in the background) and the Bridges are fluoro-lit.

32*c is "a scorcher"?!? Man, make sure to never visit the Phoenix valley. Summer temps regularly get up to 110-120*f (~43-49*c).

EDIT: Or rather, don't visit here in the summer. It's glorious here in the fall/winter/spring.

I used to live in a Place called Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory. Look it up :)

it was a scorcher because I was wandering around the lake all day and had not seen fit to include a hat or water bottle for my journey.

I actually just did look it up, hahaha. According to the info I found, Phoenix's heat seems to be more extreme, believe it or not. Also, I moved here (been here for over four years) from Fairbanks, AK (lived there for like 11 years), so I've pretty much seen both extremes just about as extreme as they get. :p

well, it's obvious to see the manner in which many of you are voting. be careful, your maturity is showing. Is it possible for you to consider the photographic merit of the entries and not just the curves of the subjects?

Yes, she's a beautiful woman, and yes Niko is assumed to be a happy man, but please try to consider the photograph on a whole. Smithy and basman's shots are actually more appealing in my opinion. At least they've made use of some interesting light.

so, those last two entries make 17.

shall i create a poll with only the first 15, since they were all entered before the proposed deadline of Saturday midnight? Or create a split poll of 8 and 7 entries? The remaining two entries would automatically fall into this weeks comp.

I think a poll of 15 is ideal, instead of the splitting and 'playoffs' scenario. to that point i think every one of these contests should be limited to the first 15 entries before the deadline.

thoughts?

fisetdavid26
