As you know, some days ago the Mille Miglia Storica passed trough Modena in its last day of race. Nowadays it's not a rally anymore but an historical evocation of the past event, with only the participation of cars predating 1957 given the fact that the last true edition of the race took part in this year. The race was then was discontinued due to a fatal accident, in which driver de Portago, his co-driver and other eleven people died.
Nowadays during the race, lot of additional cars follow the parade. These can be support cars or "new releases" that take advantage of the race as a publicity stunt. Last year the new MB C-Class was the most publicized car (along with the Audi Q7), but this year I was unable to see which was the "star" of the ad campaign (due to the fact that I set up camp near one of the timed sectors, where only participants were allowed to pass).
My spot was good, and regardless of the bad weather I was able to take quite a lot of shots (over 1000). I have to admit, however, that the quality isn't what I hoped. The lack of lighting and a shaky hand didn't help either... Also, in order to have good shoots of moving cars, i used a sport mode on my Sony. It resulted in a clear, sharp focus, but with a shorter exposure time (darkened pictures). I'm convincing my self i should get a new DSLR camera, if I ever learn to use it!
As time passed the light disappeared, and incomprehensibly, they didn't turn on the streetlights so a lot of pictures are very very dark (I didn't use the flash in order the save the battery energy). I didn't edit all those photos to safeguard my mental health, so i guess it's up to you once you download them, sorry (EDIT: finally, i did it)... Afterwards I tried to take some shots with a longer exposure, but the focus lost too much quality. I discarded a lot of pictures for these reasons.
At the end of the night, i finished my 2 Gb memory stick and also the battery. I couldn't take some pictures of other cars i found while walking home, such as a Vanquish and some present-day Maserati. i missed some other cars before of the event, but they weren't my goal.

btw, stop talking and let's begin with the pictures.
for every car i will post one or two photos provided by the owners, and as much as i can of mine.
the owners' pics are from Mille Miglia - Rassegna Stampa (http://www.1000miglia.eu/form/vetture_accettate.php?i=0&o=1) i won't use pictures from other website. All info about each car is provided by that site, so if there's something wrong, it's not my fault ;)
some cars retired before the race (the Bugatti type 12 flipped over the 2nd day), and some of these are missing from the index since they were removed from the official site before i managed to download them.
for the record i passed the last 10 days downloading those pictures, resizing the site pictures as well as mine and separating all of them in different folders for each car. i'm going to post them organized by "car number-year-manufacturer-model-displacement".

and I guess that's all I have to say about that.

i hope you enjoy my work.

Alfa Romeo won the Mille Miglia 2008 historical re-enactment

Alfa Romeo was the indisputable star of the Mille Miglia 2008 historical re-enactment: after its win in 2007, this year a Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport dating from 1928 – driven by Luciano and Antonio Viaro – again won the marathon reserved for historical cars, with an Alfa 6C 1750 Gran Sport driven by the Argentine team of Fernando Sanchez Zinni and Juan Bartolomè close behind at the finish post. Forty-six of the treasured cars in the race were Alfa Romeos, making it the most popular brand in this restaging. Altogether, no fewer than 375 cars lined up for the starter's flag in the 'finest race in the world' as Enzo Ferrari famously described it. Not to mention the fact that this year, Alfa Romeo joined the other Fiat Group Automobiles brands as Joint Presenting Sponsor to this prestigious event.

The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport is a model that shares a particular empathy with the 1000 Miglia race: in 1928 and in 1929 it won the speed race with Giuseppe Campari, at the wheel, repeating its success in the re-enactment in 2007 and 2008 with Luciano Viaro at the wheel. The same car and the same route, although in the 1920s, the roads were decidedly worse, with most of the race over unsurfaced roads. The re-staging also maintained many of the same hurdles, beginning with the 1600 km covered from Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 May, from Brescia to Brescia, passing through Rome.

The race followed the regularity formula for historical cars, a discipline that requires nerves of steel and a car that responds promptly to the driver’s controls. This was the case this year with the good-looking Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport, from the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, which proved itself to be fast and reliable at all times. Attributes that Luciano Viaro, together with his son Antonio, was able to exploit to the full by coming in ahead of the Argentinean team Sanchez Zinni and Bartolomè, driving an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport from 1930, the year when the 1000 Miglia was won in an identical car driven by Tazio Nuvolari, thus inspiring the legend of Nuvolari and his “Alfa Rossa”.

This legend was also supported by results, with Alfa cars winning 11 of the 30 editions of the 1000 Miglia race contended between 1927 and 1957, often driving off with magnificent triple crowns, such as that of 1930 with Nuvolari first Achille Varzi second and Giuseppe Campari third. In 1932, Mario Borzacchini won with an Alfa 8C 2300 Spider Touring, while in 1933, Nuvolari won again ahead of two of his team mates. The next year, Alfa Romeo won another triple crown with Varzi, Nuvolari and Louis Chiron The Alfa 8C cars were also unbeatable in 1935 (Pintacuda won first place), in 1936 (Brivio), 1937 (Pintacuda) and in 1938 (Biondetti). In1947, the 8C 2900 B won again, with Biondetti at the wheel again together with Romano. This tradition of success has extended to the present day thanks to the cars preserved by the Alfa Romeo Historical Centre of Arese and raced in the main historical car events.

Mille Miglia is one of the greatest events for sure. When was that Diatto restored? Should we say a loud 'thank you' to a recent concept car or it was done separately? Anyone knows?

Wow! I believe it's the one I've shot in Moscow a year ago at the Golden Ring rally - say, pre-Mille Miglia competition :) Except for the British flag before the door, but I guess it could be stuck there.

i'm pretty sure it is the same car since the driver is Luzhkov (RU) and the co-driver is Baturina (RU), team Classic Cars Club Russia...
the only difference i found is the flag that you already noticed but, it's just a sticker i suppose.

just to clear it out, "la matta" in Italian it's the name of "the joker", or "the wild card", that's because it's the wild or mad card. indeed, this isn't quite what you would expect from an Alfa Romeo

Hi Damiano, some pictures are really dark, and probably you can easily get a bit more out of them. I tried one of the Mercedes 190s. It is still not perfect, but it looks a bit better, I think. Apparently at the second shot from this position you got the exposure time much better....

...I know...there so many to be edited, it would take a lot of time, but i can do it. If you can recommend me a program that can do it as a batch, or in a easy and fast way, i would be very glad to improve the quality. otherwise, i will need some additional time, but that's not a problem.
right now, i use Gimp for editing my pictures, it's a good and powerful program, but a little busy.

don't know that programme, I simply used Microsoft Office Picture Manager, where you can adjust contrast and brightness very easily. I think a batch attempt will not work though. If you don't have office, Irfanview could possibly do the same and it is freely downloadable.

Thanks, i will work on those dark pictures, both already posted and to be posted. I hope to do a good job.

well they add to the atmosphere, but they do not help in creating an image of sunny Italy;)

ok, I edited all the previous photos that were too much dark, and fixed some errors...now I will proceed to post the others, hoping to preserve the quality as I will go on. The pictures are going to be darker, since the cars were supposed to pass in numerical order, almost...
