I am now starting a new car build. The car is called a Luego Velocity, I will get it on the 5th of June. I have a 1.1 Kent Crossflow out of a Ford Fiesta, this is very insurance friendly and it is a light car so it still has speed. As you can probably tell it is my first car. I have a website for my new build! Visit: Tom's Luego Velocity Build (http://www.geocities.com/sukapunch2004/velocity.html)

Got a lightened, balanced x-flow 1300 race engine if you're intrested.
The insurance company will only see it as a 1.3 :)
Currently in the Striker but we've a 1600 x-flow race engine to go in in it's place.
Interested ?

It looks like a fun car to drive and the best of it is that you are making it yourself :)

Make sure to keep us updated. Are you using the same color as in the picture or getting your own custom color?
Is your dad helping you or are you capable enough to this by yourself?

Nice, can't wait to see it :) Make a video of it too if possible!!

The colour is exactly the same as the Libra, we rang up GTM and got the RAL number for the red they use and passed it on to Luego.
I hope to do most of the build myself, i might have a mate help, he has been just as excited to me since i told him he could help!

Do you know the company that make it? Ask your mate.

MikeMcLarenF1
05-15-2004, 12:08 PM
oh.... there's really no "Company", its basically name of the car that you make yourself, he has a book on them..... the book's name is "Build your own race car for under $20,000 Cdn" and the book describes the building process of a 7 replica, and the author calls this particular model the "Locust 7". I dunno, I guess you can call it the same name as any other 7 replicas......

This is why it is sooo cheap to buy part-built Locosts :)
Lots of folks get part way through and decide it's too long or too much hassle.
Friends building another pure track car for his son using a Locost chassis complete except for engine mounts and all the running gear - 200 quid :)
Worth checking local papers, especially the free ones and even eBay :)
Lots in the UK anyway :) :)

Hi everyone. I would like to say just say that the reason that i am not posting so much is because I am in the important part of my GCSE (i suppose the Brits will understand that) years. Plus this little beast is just begging to be built, the other day i ordered a wiring loom for her, its going to be heat shrinked! It's going to look so good. For those who may not know what heat shrinking is it's when you have a tube of plastic that the wiring goes down and when subjected to heat it shrinks around the wires packing them tightly, giving a very professional look.

I'm impressed it's so clear and tidy.

most kit car builds I've seen/helped in have been in cluttered garages with donor bits from a few cars littering the floors and shelving :) I'll try and get a couple of pics next time I'm at one ....

You could get more space by building out of doors :) THOSE are the guys that amaze me, especially in British weather !!!!

Well after an hours work i have brake pipes running from front to back and front to.....front! :p Had two problems, one small and one large. The small one was when drilling to put a p clip to hold the brake pipe there it also went through the pedal box, so had to drill a clearence hole in the pedal box so the pop rivet didn't grab it. The big problem is the fact that the rad doesn't fit inside the nose cone! So i have to get a new rad.
Oh and one last thing, Yahoo geocities isn't working so for now this is my build site! Any chance of a sticky?

I aim to finish by October, since that is when i am 17. I havn't been to see it in at least 3-4 months though so i dread to see what it is like. I hope its ok! The other day i went to see a guy who is building a locost from scratch. He is a superb fabricator and has done the entire chassis from stainless steel, it is quite something!!

Suka
03-28-2005, 09:06 AM
Right. A gloriously long weekend has meant that i can do more to my car so i have a load of pictures to give you guys.
Right the first three are of the side panels, i took them to show how the panel bends in to match the lines of the chassis, this isn't a common feature on Sevens and i though it looks very nice. The fourth photo is of the interior panels.

Suka
03-28-2005, 09:11 AM
Th first two here are of the rear suspension, and the last two or the front (unfinished), the two green circles are drawn for a reason, i've named this mount, the mount from hell, it was so hard to get that bolt in. At the points i marked the bolt is touching the side panel!! One panel had to be bent to let the bolt through.

Suka
03-28-2005, 09:16 AM
Finally the last three, the first two are of the of the steering arm, unfortunatly (as the second photo shows) the brake pipes are in the way a bit!! The last photo has some panels taped into place to make it look cool! lol

More Photos, front suspesion finished, Diff mounted, rear wishbones are the wrong ones!! The first pictures are of the front suspension completed (minus having the bolts tightened), the diff mounted, and my wheels. I don't know if i have told you about them, they are 16" Compomotive CXR's with Yokohama directional racing tires on, and they were only £150 for four, second hand with 5mm of tread left!

Suka
04-02-2005, 11:27 AM
Last two photos show the dreadful news of the wishbones being the wrong type!! With the halfshafts pushed right into the diff they stick out from the hub carriers about an inch!!! This is because the wishbones i have are for the Luego Velocity, but i ordered the Velocity XT because it meant that i didn't have to shorten the halfshafts. Sorry about the picture quality but its hard to take a decent picture with such a good camera, crouched down with one hand!

Hi Suka..

Just read all the thread.. Your Luego is coming together great!!
Early in the tread you talked about the book of Ron Champion(?).
The great book of locost building:)
I have a locost kit built (almost) precicely from the book..
Havent built the whole car myself, but bought it used. My brother has built one from "zero"..
The kit comes from MK Engeneering (probably know it?), and is practicaly the same kit as the Luego. The frame welded together and the glasfiber is fabricated..

We use our Locost in a skandinavian Locost-racing championship with races in denmark, sweden and norway.. (mostly contending in norway becaus of the long traveling...:() In Uk it`s loads of racing whit these type of cars i know...
(I ENVY YOU GUYS!!!!!)

The thing unsimilar with your spesific Luego is that we use as stiff rear axel
(escort) because of the rules of the racing series.. Within the series you can use different engiens. Motorcycle or car engien.. The minimum weight of the car is depending on what engien you use and the teoretic amount of bhp on the engien..
After racing a bit and working with my locost I know how much fun you will have (and is having building it),when finishing the project of..

You say you will use the Fiesta 1.1. How much Bhp are you planing to have?
Have you calculated the final weight? (dry, and loaded with fuel and driver)
What gearbox are you planing to use?
Feel free to ask any questions (I`m not an expert, but have some expirience though.. My brother knows more anyway.. can ask him too..) if you have any problems.. but since you have started with this project, I know you have sorted the most of building it.. but you never know what problems you can have...:) been there and bla bla bla

Looking forward to see you finishing this project suka...
Keep the thread alive with some pictures :D
I`l post some of mine soon...

Hade :)

Hey! Its great to here from a guy like you. The 1.1 will only have around 80 BHP but that is fine for the moment, since the kit car insurers only go by engine size it will cost me £700 pounds a year. When i was in the market for a car I narrowed it down to either the Luego Velocity or the MK Indy ;) The only reason i took the Luego was because they did a very good cash deal at one of the kit car shows. So yeah, i know just how great a car that MK is. Weight wise i have no idea, i did talk to Luego about it and they come to around 600kg. Once again its great to hear from you!! Keep posting, can't wait to see some photos.

Suka
04-15-2005, 05:38 AM
Well had a chat with Luego and an intersting issue arose!! The Half shafts on a Sierra with rear drum brakes and the Half shafts of a Sierra with disc brakes are different lenghts!? So Luego make different rear uprights to compenstate and i simple got given uprights for discs rather than drums, sounds simple enough right? Well thats were it started to get a little more complicated. There is a also a variation in half shaft with different engine sizes. The only problem was i went up the local scrappy to get the stuff off of rather than buy a donor, this meant that the car we took the stuff off could not be there!! ARGH!! Luck was with us though and the car was still there (just about to be taken away though! :D ) but there was no visble clue to what engine was in it!!! Nothing written on the engine, no badges, nothing!! I was sitting in the car and was playing around when i opened the glove box, it contained an old MOT test paper stating the engine size!!! YEY!! So now we just have to wait for Luego to finish fabricating the uprights for me.

The NEW car he's thinking of goign Toyota power and spent time with the RAW guys at Stoneleigh, BUT as we're both BMC and Ford experienced and I add Imp/Simca/Renault then Toyota experience is thin on the ground in the workshop :)

So, comments on the Toyota options, plusses, negatives, gotchas ???

For you matra, I have looked alot into the Toyota 4age engien..
1.6 16 valve. Have you bin to the Bill Sherwood pages??

Almost like a bible for Toyota 4age engiens.. great engien.
a bit heavy, but great oportunity to tune..
He have loads of info, pros and cons...
You find it under "Engien techs" i think....

Anyone want another guess on the engien or is it time to

You know your engines Ferg

(Please excuse my spelling correction, it's meant in a helpful, caring way!!!)

I obviously don't know them that well. I thought it might be a Lotus Twink, but somehow chickened out and went for the more plentiful Fiat.

Such a fabulously appropriate engine for a Seven. I wonder if anyone has built a Locost with a Climax engine........ How's that for an idea, Matra? You're the Imp man, aren't you??

My father-in-law put a fire-pump Climax with steel crank in this car when he did the restoration.

Only in so far as many MANY years ago brother had an Imp rally car.
The doughnut drive couplings were NEVER meant for competition :)
The engine was out almost every event, a little too highly strung.
It ended it's days buried in the rear axle of a Snow Plough/gritting truck breaking it's axle :)
More recently friend is competing in a Clan in the post-historic events, but he doesn't have it tuned that much. Still goes like stink though - NO weight at all :)

Can't think of any recent 7even where the Imp block was used. The imp's real win is in mid/rear-engined where it's compact size and transmission are a real winner. There are a few Clans and Darrian/Bavarians out there competing.
You've got me wondering, I'll ask around the kit club :)

I saw a home built special on a Spitfire chassis maybe 10-15 years ago by the BRDC at Silverstone which had been built with a Talbot Sunbeam engine and box, brand new from the Peugeot spares dept. I think it was a 1000cc-ish version of the Imp engine although mated to a RWD 'box obviously. It was claiming 100 brake on the homemade badge.

That would be a great Locost project for a youngster worried about insurance. Hmmm...where can I find a scrap Sunbeam?!

AS for Imp transmission versions...I really love those Ginetta G21s, even nicer than the 15.

For power from a small engine, motorbike engines are probably the best, I don't know much about them but I'm guessing a gearbox with a reverse is going to be hard to get.

most bike engined conversions use an in-line selectable reverse add on trnsmission box..
A bit expensive at about £400 BUT the big advantage is you get 6 forward gears AND 6 reverse gears and if you've the balls you can go 120mph backwards :)

Right, well. Steering column and rack fitted, no problem. Scuttle kind of fitted, no problem. Rear drums can be fitted, no problem. Front disc brakes assembled and fitted, minus the pads, no problem. So i thought i would put a wheel on to make it look cool, and maybe i could take a clever photo so it looks like it is getting on really well. Span the wheel...ITS BUCKLED!!! Crap.

Damn car. Well today i tried to assemble the O/S rear drum brake. Only the back plate has to be spaced off the hub carrier with the aid of 6 washers per bolt (there are 4 bolts). So now i have run out of washers to finish the job. I need 5 to finish this side then 28 to do the other side. Typical.

Is it variable or is it FIXED at 6 ?
I'd recommend getting local engineering firm to turn you up a single piece to do that job.
Even if it might vary, once you've assembled and know the numbers it's worth getting the piece turned.

No, i might be able to get away with five now that i think about the spacing. Its only six because that is the amount it takes to hold the back plate far enough away from the hub carrier to not touch. I could get some pieces made, i am just too lazy. I might get my Dad to see what he can do, i'm sure we have a friend who will fabricate some bits.

As requested, an update.
Firstly my latest problem. We dropped the engine into the car only find that the gearbox is too short by about 6 inches, as you can see from the second photo. That problem however has now been fixed. We picked up a 5 speed type 9 box the other day from the scrappy so that sorted that out. We also managed to pick up a fairly new VW Lupo radiator which was nice.

Well, for the dash we have taken a large piece of cardboard and cutout the template for the space it needs to take up. We have drawn on the basic design we want to aim for and plan to cut it out of MDF or similar then wrap it in vinyl or similar.

No idea when I am going to finish it, school work really eats up my time, and so do these constant problems. Hopefully by May ;).

No idea about how many hours have been spent. The manual is fairly comprehensive, there isn't much more you need to know.

I really have no idea. I know thaa for the other car my Dad and I built they recommend 250 hours, so i would guess this car could be done in 100?? I dunno, have to see what LotusLocost says. If he notices the question.

Oh..:o
I noticed now..
I think my brother spent about 125-150 hours on his...
But he was in a bit of hurry for completing it for an upcomming season...
And then things tend to take twice as long because of all the extra mistakes you do
But his/our cars are only racing.. and no show... so about 100 h is probably a good estimate for a nice and clean build...
But then again part of the joy is the buliding..:)

Nice progress on the Velo by the way! Oh those type 9 gearboxes are nice:) Have some of those in the garage! Not in the best condition though... What brakes are up front there? Hi-Spec? And what discs?
They look rally nice! Should stop it in a few meters!

I, on the other hand, have had a rough atumn and no time to be in the garage.. So I started a bit late this year with the Locost, but I will be there the 4-5 of june! New dry sump oil pan ordered from Burton today actually.. And a new exshaust-manifoild is in progress! should be slick.. I`l give you some pics later!

Well, havn't updated in a while but to be honest not a lot has happened except take a step back! :(
First one is from a week or so ago when we had it on the drive and were thinking about the dash layout. Second photo is of what we came up with, its not completely done since it is only a mock up of what we want but you can see the pencil lines of the rest of what we want.
The third is the engine laying on the ground with its new clutch plate fitted ready for the new gearbox, then it can go back in the car. The other pics are just filling up the rest of the spaces for photos. :D

They are only there so that i can move it around. I wasn't really paying attention when i put them on. They are only held in with 2 wheel nuts so its not hard to change them. It will be sorted before SVA though so its not a worry.

Well, I haven't been on this forum in YEARS but I thought I should re-visit.

I have graduated University now so I have loads of time to put into this. Attached is a picture I took the other week when I rolled it out of the garage, not much has changed since the last photos. Interior panels are basically all in and I am focusing on the rear end right now. Got the brakes to finish plumbing in and a tank to sort out. Fortunately I know a Aluminium Fabricator so for a small fee he is making me one to my dimensions. Should give me around 7 Gallons and a 300 mile range (dependant on my right foot). Feels good to actually make progress.

A masters doesn't really help. Ideally I would like to end up in TV and to be honest they don't really even pay attention to the final degree grade, it's all about building a portfolio. I have a decent amount of experience under my belt but there are so few jobs going and such a huge number of people applying. Current plan is to get a decent job local to me, build up a lot of savings and then move to London with my contacts inside the BBC and work my way up there, I just can't afford to live in London right now.

Are you setting a goal for completion of it? Spring time? :)

My goal currently is to get it moving and drivable over the winter. I could get it IVA'd and registered for Stoneleigh but I don't think I will end up working on it enough. Hopefully though I'll find a job soon and progress can pick up, right now I can't afford to go out and buy all the bits I need to finish up parts of it.
