As some of you know, I live in Modena since some years for University purpose. This summer, between my exams, I managed to get my mum's car so I could drive to some interesting places.
I visited the Galleria Ferrari, the Lamborghini's Centro Eccellenza and the factory itself, the Pagani's Factory and four exotics dealer of the town. I had the chance to follow a couple of Ferrari California out for testing as posted here (http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/matt-s-hi-res-hide-out/36400-ferrari-california-7.html) while in Maranello, among some F430 out for the usual tests. We also entered one of Ferrari's official garages, the Carrozzeria Zanasi, which takes care of the recovering of some old cars and the personalization of them, both old and new. There was a deep red Enzo with dark grey rims, and a pearl white and black 599 GTB among others.
Apart from these highlights, the Galleria itself was kinda disappointing, bad illumination, a few cars, a very dirty bar (ok, a huge group of children was present that day, but I guess they could clean all the mess at least), the Building itslef isn't good looking inside and there wasn't a "theme" for the showed car, except for three of them, the "world tour cars", that is to say the F355 World Tour, the 612 Scaglietti from the China Tour and the 599 GTB from the Americas Tour. The cars were all gorgeous yes, but I felt like they (Ferrari) weren't interested in make the show itself more interesting, like if just the presence of the cars was enough.
Well, lets begin. It's going to be another huge thread ;)
I'm aware the quality of some pictures isn't the best but I'm still learning how to use properly the gf's Nikon D40, and Lightroom is another issue when I messed up with the exposition...

The Galleria is indeed not a very conspicuous building but it does contain many goodies. Actually they change the car collection regularly and you will sometimes find historic vehicles that will 9or have been) subject of obtaining a certificate of origin. I found the exposed engine collection, including the experimental (one cylinder) ones, very interesting.

Yes, the engines' selection maybe was the most interesting part, and I enjoyed it as you will see...

Very cool Leon. Such a convenient location to go to university. :D Was it your idea to choose a school in Modena?

You can try going into the white balance and try taking a test shot with every one until you get the color right. It's a fun camera to use once you get the hang of it. I would edit my photos too, but it's such a time consuming process to go to each and every one of them.

BTW, nice pictures.

yeah, when I took my high school's degree I was looking for studying something strictly connected to cars since I'm not exactly into study and I needed something to keep me involved, and in Modena there's a specific course in Engineering of the Vehicle. It's present in Turin too IIRC. I could do the first part of my degree at my house, near Venice, (in Italy there two levels of degree), but after talking with some teachers from Modena's University I discovered, as supposed, that doing so I would need to re-pass some exams which they would eventually think it would be necessary due to differences between the two Universities, so I decided to move from the beginning, my parents obviously are still at our original home.

That's very cool. A study in cars I had thought about too, but now it's medicine for me. I'm garbage at math. But I love biology and the sciences very much, and I like helping people too. So it should work out as a career for me.

everything?
I'm not the kind of person who would like to work in a huge factory like Ferrari for example, and I'm also the kind of person who would like to work at personal projects...but it's still very early for that! But I have my ideas about my future...;)

ok, and now some images of the old Bugatti factory in Campogalliano, out of Modena. on July the 18 it was sold on a auction for 8.1 millions of euro. After the Artioli's Bugatti went out of business, the factory was bought by a local enterpriser, which was found guilty of fraudulent bankruptcy a couple of years later. this auction was meant to raise some money for paying the bill. it was bought by a local cooperative of industrial construction. probably it will completely change in the next months.
I planned to visit the B.Engineering factory too, but I forgot the address and no one seemed to know it in the area...it is the factory behinf the Edonis Concept, based on the EB110 platform and used for testing the Veyron's tires during its difficult development. Now they are planning a restyling of the Edonis, and in the meanwhile the are the official reference for owners of the EB110.

LeonOfTheDead

the factory isn't been used since Bugatti's days, but it doesn't appear abandoned. there were also a couple of quite recent security cameras. the first is the furnishers entrant, the building in front of it was that of the assembly line.
the other entrant was meant for the offices, which are in the circular building.

LeonOfTheDead
08-04-2008, 10:46 AM
the blue building were the laboratories and the place where there was a huge computer developed in a joint venture with French Aerospatiale, and it was able to reproduce the dynamic of the car in a multiple choices of conditions (wheather, weight, grip, temperature) on a specific road after registering some (I guess a lot) of data during just one ride on that road or track. The white building is the assembly line

maybe you can notice the Bugatti's emblem on the blue building. it was covered with the paint just a couple of months before the Veyron was officially introduced in 2005

oh, I forgot to say that the price for the Galleria Ferrari is 12 euro.

and now the Centro Eccellenza Lamborghini, basically a museum inside the factory. The price 8 euro for the museum, but for 20 (stundents) you can have the factory tour in a lot of languages. We also had a guide for the museum, but even if she was very kind, she didn't say anything new, except for a couple of errors...btw, the museum is so better looking than the Galleria Ferrari, illumination is granted by a big glass wall, and artificial illumination if necessary. the cars are well positioned and with a plate on their side with a short story about them. on the walls there were a lot of pictures and posters, and some fun ad that I never saw before. the selection of cars was quite complete, and almost all the road going Lamborghini were present.
The factory was even better, since we had the opportunity to visit it just with the guide, and not being included in a bigger group of tourists. A reservation is recommended but not necessary.
being just me, the GF and the guide, we had all the time to look at the assembly line of the Gallardo and of the Murcielago/Reventòn and we could also ask to the people working on the cars what the guide didn't know.
The Gallardo is fully completed from the ground in 150 hours, and is assembled quite manually in an automated line whit 15 stations, each of them during 45 minutes. The Murcielago instead required 280 hours, it's more hand built than the Gallardo and even the assembly line is moved manually every 165 minutes, for a total of 12 stations (...IIRC...). the engine of the Gallardo arrives fully assembled with the gearbox from the Germany, together with the chassis and bodywork (painted automatically by immersion, while the Murcielago is painted with manual sprays) while the V12 is hand built in Sant'Agata in 8 hours. I asked personally to one of the mechanics how long it took...
Their engines are pretty huge btw, bigger for example than the AMG V12 of the Zonda, since I saw both of them out of the cars.
Btw, visiting the leather department, we could see one of the ugliest colors combination for a Gallardo Spyder: pink for the bodywork and maroon for the interior and the folding top. even the people of Lamborghini told it simply sucked. It was ordered by a Japanese teenager btw...
The interior, completely hand made, required 8 hours per each car. My GF particularly enjoyed this moment being both into cars and fashion. And a funny thing about the leather they use is that they use it also to protect the mate colors (white, pearl, grey and black for what I saw) in the assembly line. It came out during the first assemblies that this kind of paint job was too much delicate for the plastic protection they used, and at the and of the assembly the car was full of little scratches. so now they use the same leather of the interior...kinda expensive I suppose, and scarring to drive every day.
One of the best thing is the parking lot behind the factory. It is the first thing you see while entering for the factory tour. There were about 300 Lamborghini, and I saw an Audi A5 among them. Usually, it's the contrary.
I managed to see the 17th Reventòn in the final stages of its creation in the Murcielago's line, but unfortunately, and obviously, it wasn't allowed to take pictures inside the factory. btw, it's strictly related to the Murcielago, under the skin the two cars are identical, and this prevents me from accepting its price, but I have to admit it's better looking, or at least, it captures your eyes more than what a Murcielago could ever do.

That's very cool.

The Lamborghini with the pink interior must be really ugly indeed. If you wave cash, they'll build it!

I don't understand what you said about the leather. Could you explain that again?

Well, Audi is related to Lamborghini now, so seeing an A5 in their parking lot isn't that surprising.

the funny thing is one A5 and 300 Lamborghini :D

sorry for my english abilities...I try to explain myself properly: they use plastic protections to protect the bodywork during the assembly.
When they introduced the mate colors, it came out that the protections ruined that kind of color, since it was too much delicate, so now they cover almost the whole car with sheets of leather to protect it.
they tried other solutions, but without results. better? :o

Gotcha! So it's kinda oxymoronic that the paint protector ruined the very thing it was supposed to protect.

the guide told me it's a very very delicate paint, and she raised herself some doubts about the every day use of the car.

Oh, btw, the Gallardo had a pink paint and maroon interior and soft top
there was eve a maroon Murcielago with orange interior, but it was better looking then what you would think

I understand. No idea why, but somehow Ferraris aren't as good look as they used to, but Lamborghini seems to get it spot on. A 599 GTB would turn my head, but not as much as a Lamborghini Murcielago if they were together. It looks awkward, even, next to the Lambo.

How do you like the Nikon D40? What lens does it have on it? I own one as well. Haven't been shooting cars lately though.

the lens is the standard one, we are considering something more, but the we still have to understand what could fit our exigences. we need to understand our exigenses before I suppose ;)
I'm happy with it, it's user friendly enough for me, and offers a good range of personalization for a couple of photo newbies like us. I am still not used to the manual programs, they are good but I often forget to adjust the exposition time while light conditions are changing, and then I discovered I took a lot of dark or too clear images, and need to edit them. I'll see what I mean in some of the pics from the Pagani's factory...

the lens is the standard one, we are considering something more, but the we still have to understand what could fit our exigences. we need to understand our exigenses before I suppose ;)

The basic lens is a good quality lens.

Yeah, you gotta stay on top of things that way. You could turn the dial to the circle with the lightning bolt. That's the automatic no flash mode. The mode is actually really good and has saved my rear end once or twice when I decided to be lazy and not look at my pictures and just shoot.

I try to not use the flash as much as possible, I don't like it's effect and the colors it creates, otherwise I reduce it's time, and in this way I obtained some nice pics of the subject illuminated and a very dark background.

really appriciate the Lambo pics ! great job !

glad to hear that ;)

and now the Pagani ones
as I said before, the factory is very small, but very interesting. The only part where I could take pics was the showroom where two Zonda F Coupé were parked waiting for their owners (usually the owner comes to the factory to take his new car).
Then there were three other rooms, one for the preparation of the carbon fiber parts, one for the assembly of the main parts of the cars, as chassis and main parts of the bodywork, where there were also the two oven for the carbon fiber parts and a hidden parts where they were preparing the next year car, the new Zonda. in this room there was also the first Zonda R under assembly, probably ready for the Paris show, a the Zonda F Coupé from the 2006 Geneva show under service, and a new one in an early stage of assembly, can't say the color. Apparently the Zonda R will have golden rims.
in the last room the car is completely assembled, and here there were other two cars in final stages. I'm pretty sure one of those werent a new car because there was a sheet inside of the car with some data, and an appointment from the owner: "reduce downforce".
As I said in this room photos weren't allowed, but I managed to take a some pics while the door was open and looking through the window used as a sort of glass case.

The home theater in front of it is designed by Pagani and is inspired by the Zonda's cockpit

This is the Zonda F prototype number 2, but it's now used to test new components of the new cars, such as the upcoming Cinque, R and the new Zonda. The other car is a Zonda S Roadster, apparently used as a "courtesy car" since I spotted it some months ago at the Pagani stand at "2008 Modena Terra di Motori (http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/multimedia/36181-2008-modena-terra-di-motori-hi-res-photoshoot-6.html)" and latter a friend of mine spotted it in front of his house (in Padua), just for one day.

the red Argentinian F3 car is the first car ever produced by Pagani back in 1978, is called simply "Pagani A1"

Do you have some more shots of Prototipo 2 from the front and from the back? That would be great:) .

Well done, nice shots. They are really fast with building cars, I visited the factory 2 weeks before and the roadster at the assembly room had no interieur and no engine and so on, there was only the monocoque and some chassis parts

unfortunately I couldn't go where the Prototipo 2 was parked and I took the pictures through the window.
Since they are working at 3-4 cars at the same time, in order to produce arund 15 a year, each car's assembly could take as long as two months imo.

Oh, I forgot to say, they showed us the drawings of the new facility which is being built right now near the old one, it appears very interesting as an industrial building, and it will raise the production up to 40 cars a year, not 60 as some sources from the web told months ago.

IMO it's a one-off, if there were others or other models I think the guide would have tell something about it. The same guide is responsible for almost everything you can visit in Modena (see he's site (http://www.motorstars.it/)) and obviously all the data and info he told us were passed by the factory, and Mr Pagani (I met him twice, but I cannot say I knew him) is the kind of person very proud of his creations, you can see it even standing in the showroom or looking at the factory rooms all adorned with pic, letters and so on. so I guess he wouldn't miss such info on his first car.

btw, next garage: Ferriauto (http://www.ferriautomodena.it/)
