Ok, I am getting a bmw m3 very soon here. I also posted in the euro section, but thought some of the things may be better covered in this part of the forum.

First, I am getting a Borla exhaust system for the car. Would a normal mechanic be OK installing that, or should I take it to a specialist?

Another question is where would I be able to find engine mods, and what kind of mods are available for a 2004 m3? I was linked to only 2 sites, and they did not have much to offer there. I would mainly like to get an air intake if I can, some large rotors and yellow brake shoes, and just some overall engine mods.

Then my other main question is how would I remove the restrictor on the car, or if it even has one? This will be an american version. I have heard of many cars having speed limiters or restrictors on them, and they are able to be removed.

Thanks a lot.

Wait until next year there is not a lot of "mods" available for the car because its year is 2004 in probably 2005 you will see a whole lot more mods.

hey this site is arguably the best bmw tuning site on the net. the guy that started it has an insane e36 M3 and these guys made the more famous documentary on the 1st US Gumball 3000 rally.

they have heaps of info in their forums and i have no doubt you could find out all that you would wnat to know there. unfortunately the main page seems to be down right now. but still take a look cause i think you can still access the forums.

anyway, hope this is of some help. oh and BE SURE to post some pics of your car as soon as you get it please!!

Oh, I will.

Pending no setbacks on schedule of getting the down payment, and not having to special order one, I should have it and everything installed that I am getting right away by mid july at the latest.

So far I have found some giovanna rims, borla exhaust, and brembo gt brakes.

the only restrictor for the M3 that i know of is the 250km/h speed limiter, which many german tuning houses have gotten around i believe. as far as naturally aspirated mods, i dare say with the stock HP/Litre rating of the M3, you'd be spending mega bucks searching for anything else, so perhaps forced induction would be the better way. if your using it on track though, upgrading the brakes would be a great option as i believe an E46 M3 comes standard with single piston calipers, which im not exactly fond of so maybe some 6 pistons up the front and 4's on the back would shave a couple of seconds off the lap times if your prepared to push the car

Any mechanic shop would probably be able to install an exhaust system. The M3 does have a electronically controlled speed limiter (i think the M3 is limited to 155mph) and you would have to get an aftermarket chip or CPU upgrade to disable the speed limiter. If you are going to install aftermarket performance parts try to find parts that have some type of warranty. Dinan BMW has a good warranty policy and they have a pretty extensive amount of performance parts (suspension, engine, wheels, ect).

nice, ill look into that, thanks!

most performance mods wont be finished until next summer, maybe this summer depending on cash flow. Main things im worried about to start are teh brakes, the muffler, and the tires/rims. Ill probably do the engine chip over the winter. Most places require you to send that away and all that, and i would hate to be without my car for a couple of weeks.
