I was driving on a nearby street and saw a very smashed-up Ford Taurus.
I went back to the location on bicycle and took these photos. I sure hope that if there were occupants in the car that they were okay. It's possible that the car was parked there but I don't think so because I didn't see skid marks next to the curb.

I wonder what hit it? I have no idea what caused the collision or how many cars were involved and I didn't see it in the newspaper.

I think it would have had to be parked, there is no way it could have limped home in that condition.
It looks like something higher hit it in the back. Maybe an SUV?
In the second pic, it looks like it got eaten.

If it was hit at that location there would be debris all over the road.

Yeah, I think it was something big that hit it, like an SUV or even a semi.

And, yes, from a certain angle, it looks like something took a bite out of it!

That's true. I would have seen glass on the pavement (which there wasn't).
It has been there since at least yesterday morning. I suppose it will be towed away sooner or later.

It looks like they swept a little, but I dunno.

Maybe a lorry hit it...

There might also be a possibility that the car was vandalized...

To that extent? I doubt it.

What I don't get is what's the car doing there if the crash didn't happen there. Surely, wouldn't it have been better to tow it to a scrap yard?

Guy could have been really drunk and crashed it into a tree. Calling a tow truck would mean police involvement and such.

Yeah someone might've started hacking into with a chainsaw or something.. I'm sure you would find a way to vandalize a car into that state.

It looks like a pretty typical offset crash to me, a car-car crash could easily cause that much damage considering the whole width of the rear didnt absorb the impact.

Looks like it just missed the side of the reinforcement beam, which is made to take the impact. The rear body panel behind the beam isn't really made for an impact. What ever hit it had to be moving along pretty good tho, it even kinked the other quarter and pulled it back(look at the back door gap).

The entire wheel assembly looks shunted out of place.

From the nose damage I presume it may very well have been a nose to tail or a parked car that was forced into the back of another parked vehicle.

EDIT: and the airbag hasn't gone off. So Fortunately I doubt was inside.

Either way, Hell of a way for a Taurus to die.

I've fixed cars which have had smashed airbag sensors from the accident, and they didn't go off.:p

Ducktape and bondo for the redneck win.

I was in an accident riding in my grandmothers continental when a tacoma ran a red light at 55mph and hit the front drivers side. Her airbag went off, but mine didn't.

Driving drunk in reverse at those speeds?.................impressive. Unless the tree was a really drunk Ent that tripped over his car.:D
