Once the South African gov tightened the gun laws, the value of my c1936 Mauser Oberndorff, mini K98, 0.22 rifle dropped from around R6k to a best offer from a dealer of R500. Couldn't keep it as my kids have zero interest in firearms and it would ultimately just get destroyed, so I exported it to save it.

It was sold on auction at Holts Auctioneers in London on 19 December for 210 Pounds. Guess that's the max I could get for it and I'm happy such a beautiful weapon will live on in someone's collection. :)

It's definitely not mall ninja status. Pretty gun, piece of history. Good on ya for saving it! :)

Not directly, but you have to have a very good reason for wanting one e.g. hunting, target shooting, plus prove club membership etc. As a mostly 'purposeless calibre' few licences are granted for 0.22's now.

purposeless calibre!? how do they figure that? it's the most common calibre used in all competitive events! not to mention small animal pest control

I've been wanting a .17HMR for a while now. Is it as much fun as it seems like?

yes. hilarious little round. completely replaced my .22lr in the field.
doesn't quite bridge the gap between .22lr and .223rem as well as the .22 hornet due to it's lighter projectile but it's much smaller and more efficient.
very accurate too, i went budget and got a marlin 917VS and still gets first round hits on thumbtacks at 100 yards.
