BMW's new F1 car for the 2009 season, to be driven by Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld. Pic 2 shows a direct comparison between the new car and its race-winning predecessor.

I like the honest look of it, except for the over-the-top front wing.

Am i the only person who thinks that the new cars all seem smaller? IMO they seem to sit lower to the ground and appear shorter.

i think its just because they lost all of the appendages. but they all look so much better than their predecessors. this one seems to have a much better visual resolution of the rear wing than the others do.

I have to agree (with the exception of the Renault of course). It took a little while to get over the initial shock factor of the new front and rear wing dimensions, but now I'm really warming to the new cars. The cleaner side-pods really are a refreshing change. Just a shame Renault's car has been thrashed with the ugly stick, particularly as over the past few years their cars have been among the best proportioned and pleasing to the eye (silly recent colour schemes notwithstanding).

I agree. The previous cars looked like more and more stuff were glued on. The shark-fin thing also looked bad.

With these clean sidepods the cars look much better and I love sweeping surface of the sidepod merging in a coke-bottleneck with the narrow gearbox(especially on the williams). It really connects aero with mechanics.

The high long nose is not that nice I think. I liked the late ferrari noses of 2008, but I guess the rules exclude these.

Many complain about the wings, but they're growing on me. This BMW is still a bit of a snowplow though.

The Renault was quite ugly though, but interresting rear part of sidepods

Post #4 pic #4. Both Nick and Robert: "Concentrate..concentrate...(the car's nose shows up)..Whahaha!!"
It's the ugliest F1'09 car yet.. I was hoping this front wing was just a joke when they have tested it last year...

Side-by-side picture shows how much better the BMW, and all the cars look this year.

What's up with the lower left knob on the steering wheel? Since when does an f1 car need cruise control!? These guys get paid millions to drive these cars and they can't even be bothered to use the right foot now?

I think it is quite ugly, tbh.

most likely for in the pit lane. black flag if you are speeding, so most everyone uses a cruise control of some sort.

That's what I thought too, pokey, but the knob actually has settings for 0, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 and 300. The red button marked PL on the upper right is the actual 'Pitlane Limiter'.

Cruise control wasn't on the f1.07, but the f1.08 had it: BMW Sauber F1 - BMW Sauber F1 (http://www.f1network.net/boards/report/s491.htm?936,8948279). 300, one heck of a cruising speed.

I assume its to save fuel for the in-laps during quali, or something of that nature.
Either that or Heidfeld is a ghostrider.

It could also be for testing if they want to hold a steady speed to gather more accurate data.

It's so ugly that I literally LOL when I first saw these pics, the nosecone looks like a duck's beak, and the front wing looks like the duck's gonna take off. I do agree with Bleeding_Heart though, the Renault R29 is a mess, period.

But the pit lane speed is always set through the entire weekend and it's never more than 100 kph. There's no need to have an adjustable cruise control. Besides the button to use the speed limiter is the upper right red thumb button labeled "PL".

The pit lane limiter changes between rounds from 80 to 100km/h IIRC.
