the RX-8 is a sweet looking machine but you just cant beat the lines of an FD :), i wonder why ppl dont recognise 7's as much as say skylines and supras. performance is on par with the 260hp versions and the 280hp version surpase in several ways. plus they look better as you know IMO. mabe its just the negetive reputaion of the rotary...

Good question...

I do recognize them as cars in the same category. I made a thread comparing the RX7, NSX, Supra and 3000GT and the RX7 came in 2nd (Votes).

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3294

Then I made another thread with an article from Motor Trend that was released in 1993 comparing the RX7, NSX, Supra, 3000GT and 300ZX Turbo. And you can see that the RX7 didn't come last on any test (1/4 mile, breaking distance, 0-60 etc...)

The RX7 it's a hell of a car.

The Australian Touring car championship has also been won By an RX7 (again i cant rember what year as imsure it happend in group A another series i didnt really follow) The driver was Allan Moffat 4 times bathurst winner (all in fords) and 3 time champion his rx7 win was the last of his carerr he later then defected back to ford as an owner driver in a ford Seierra..

Mazda rotarys where never big sellers in australia the main killer was large price tags in 82 the rx7 cost aroung 15k for a base model where the ford xd cost round 10k and that was a luxo barge car...in 95 the rx7 clocked up prices around 70,000 and even nowdays still find prices in the high 20s and up to mid 30s depending on year and condition...the series 5 managed to get into wheels magazine as on of the top used performance cars for under $15,000

1. for a 1.3 liter engine their pretty thirsty but if you think of them as a 2.6 liter engine which its closer to(dont want to get into the whole comparing pistons to rotors argument, its close to a 2.6 litere engine take my word for it) theyr arnt as bad as most think.
2. their on par with the supra's, 300zx's, NSX's, and other japanese sports cars. high 13's t lo 14's in the 1/4 mile, about 5 seconds 0-60, around .95 on the skidpad. lighter than the other cars and more of a no frills track car, more emfasis on sport and less on touring.
3. we'll their reliability is a touchy issue, from the factory the early FD's had some issues, the cooling system was inadaquate in some cases, early paint jobs were poor, interior plastic tended to break easily, the sequential turbo's had some bugs that needed to be worked out of the system. most of this was due to mazdas cost cutting and wanting to get its flagship sports car out there to turn a profit as soon as and as cheaply as possible. most of these issues were taken care of in '94 and '95 and the '96 on cars ive heard were pretty much flawless. as for the early american cars were stuck with i can list the few things that need to be adressed to make the car capable of living well into the odometer :)
