View Full Version : Phillip Is Historics and TGWpE4

03-21-2009, 05:26 AM
The annual UCP trip to Phillip Is Historic festival has happened again. Despite some reports of non-attendance by some cars they where there and many fields where larger and more diverse than in previous years.

This year the group comprised of Slick Holden, syko, Ibrake4Rainbows, Sauc3 and myself.

This year I will be grouping my photos by car, and providing as much info with each as possible. I'm sure the other will be along at some point to post a pic or 2 as well.

The Saturday at the track was marked by heavy rain, with more showers on the Sunday.

Pic set 1: Did someone mention I have a thing for XJS'?

F1 pics part 1

I need a better camera...

More F1:

This is the ex-Berger B186 that won in Mexico after setting F1's highest top speed and max power when the boost hit 5.5bar (80psi) for approx 1300bhp!

After a acquiring the car without a computer Les' team have got it running very well and he reports that it runs better and is far easier to drive with higher boost levels than at low boost. The engine maps have been guessed at over 10k rpm, as the dyno they use doesn't read past that, but there is still a 150bhp gain between 9400 and 9700rpm.

The car's cockpit is rather cramped (shocking for a F1 car!) and he wears shin-pads as the steering rack is positioned rather far back. Instrumentation is rather limited, but it does feel it would be a great place to be when on a track.

To much disappointment it blew a turbo on Friday afternoon and we didn't see it run.

More rust!

This time an Alfa - Ricciardi

This is the father's car of a father and son 2 car Alfa collection

Owner was saying he will soon be redoing his cold air supply like his son's car so it looks a lot better.

There is also reports of chassis that is sitting unclothed in Adelaide with someone who has no intention to build it, or part with it.

Now the son's car, with him features in pic 6

The much neater air intake and airbox set up is shown in pics 3 and 4

E- Type V12 special.

Owner said it feels a little heavy over the front, and has looked at was of making it lighter, but says with the front shell needing to have structural rigidity its hard to do.

Pics where taken during a scrutineering inspection. Owner mentioned he would prefer to race in historic GT classes, but tends to be lumped with Historic Prototype as its considered a special. Says that causes him some issues, with trying to get wins, but he just gets on with it.

He also used to race an XJS in Targa Tassie, and provided me with much information as to that.

E30 M3 #1

This is the ex-Pirro car, driven by Glenn Seton to victories that made some of the others look silly.

On the damp track on Saturday I thought he showed his higher skill level compared to there drivers, on Sunday he showed that he had been taking it easy.

Ford Sierra Cosworth R500.

Driver seemed to have some issues getting the power down on the wet track...

Dummy grid before the Saturday race

Little pussy cat, only car to ever win Bathurst 1000km and Spa 1000km

Not sure the kink at the end of the air intake ducting is helping, and final pic shows where it coped a put on the Sunday morning.

Saturday's times where poor, with the driver and owner saying he was on the wrong tyres and that they felt like soap.

03-21-2009, 07:44 AM
Some under bonnet pics of a 2nd XJS, with much better ducting arrangement. Much quieter than Mike's ex-TWR car.

Last 3 pics show a different English rarity - A running car!

If I ever go to Australia, I'll make sure to join you on this event. Did anyone from UCP race?

03-21-2009, 10:26 AM
Sweet pics Chris, looks like it was quite an event, shame I missed it.

I would have liked to headbutt Regi in the gentleman area. Several times.

Yes I am, sir.

I had to drop by to show some love to the Aussies.

And the Dutchman pretending to be one.

Thanks for pics - this event might be worth crossing the tasman for sometime in the future!

Nice pics.
Mike Roddy's Jag won the 1985 Bathurst 1000 and the 1984 Spa 24-hour race, so its one of the more valuable Touring Cars from the 1980s. Its good to see him using it for what it was built for and not just leaving it sitting a museum somewhere.
Unless the rules for the Bathurst 1000 (currently for V8 Supercars) and the Spa 24-hour (currenly for FIA GT) are re-aligned again in the future, it is a feat that will never be repeated.
I believe the ex-Schintzer BMW driven by Glen Seton is one of the cars that won the Nissan-Mobil 500 at Wellington (with Pirro as one of the drivers). Considering that its a DTM spec Evo-Sport, it may be the car that won in 1990 or 91.

Also, one of those "Datsuns" is in fact the Winfield Nissan Skyline GT-R - the 1992 Bathurst 1000 winning car - a car that is equally one of the most loved and most hated car in Australian Touring Car history.
It won the 1992 Bathurst 1000 after being reduced to 3 wheels and crashing at very low speed into some other parked cars on Conrad Straight. The reason it was on three wheels? Even a rain master like Jim Richards has limited abilities to control a 600 bhp car in a deluge when its on slicks. AWD didn't help in such a situation either.
And how did a crashed car win? The race was red-flagged and the results were taken back to the last completed full lap, as per FIA regulations. And at that time the GT-R was still leading. With the Ford Sierra RS500 of Dick Johnson in second.
However, the fans weren't happy.
See this Youtube video for what happened, and for Jim Richard's response to the crowd: YouTube - "Pack of A.......s" Bathurst 1992 Jim Richards (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_ATwXUtxPA).
Apparently upset Ford and Holden fans still try to damage the car and throw eggs at this GT-R to this day....

Just a small taster or some of the ones I came up with. my camera (and indeed my eyes) had MAJOR focus drama for whatever reason. so some of my shots sucked ass. these were some of the good ones though.

My pictures are not that good. Some smart guy thought it would be a good idea to attend the weekend with a T-Shirt and shorts. It's not going to rain just because they say it is:rolleyes:. Spent most of the time trying to hide my arms from the rain.

1: Jag XK8. Nice plate.
2: Glen Seton in the BMW M3 on his way out.
3: Melbourne that way <-----

Ves Kanda

A car built in Adelaide to Group C spec in 1984 by K & A Engineering. Never campaigned in Europe of North America due to lack of budget, it did some racing in Australia and New Zeeland around that time though, but without much competition.

Pics set 1

03-24-2009, 06:04 AM
The car has been run for many years, but over the last 12 months it has received a full rebuild and was showing very good pace.

Earlier in the year it set a new Phillip Is lap record for historic cars, and was looking forward to a strong showing in the race against the Sauber C9, the 956/962 and the Chevy Corvette Group C car.

Unfortunately its race was cut short when during Sunday's race it started to emit blue smoke.

Pic 6 shows in interesting exhaust layout. Anyone know what the advantage is?

probably is to change the reflection of the pressure waves' when they reached the air out of the exhaust, so to help combusted gases to go out from the cylinder when the exhaust valves open.

Sauber C9

This is chassis 05, winner of the world sports car championship in 1989.

Also holds the 410km/h speed record at Le Mans.

Since the restoration it started 5th on the grid at Spa and won by over a lap in the 90min enduro.

This group of cars didn't run on Saturday, but on Sunday it was at the front being harassed by the Vas Kanda - till that expired. The driver then eased off, and was passed by the Corvette GTP.

Back end never looked that planted though, was bouncing down the straight.

I don't have a great deal from PI this year. More because i was trying to keep dry. And i do hate my camera.
