As regards the SM, a magnificent automobile which gets me immense pleasure during the exits with the SM club de France of which I am a member.

IF you are as me fascinated by this car, or if you want to discover it, not being able to put here all my photos, to see the adventures of this automobile you can go to my address blog:

Bienvenue à UCP, JR78. A wonderful collection of Citroens you have there!
Great photos of the prototype, looks quite menacing... très dangereux!
How successful was it as a race car? It's new to me.

f6fhellcat13, my guess is the Kammback helped with stability if not in reducing drag, besides reducing weight by shortening the car.

The race cars were the Group 5 SMs campaigned in rallying by the factory. It wasn't successful since the standard car was too big and heavy and the Group 5 prototypes couldn't face proper prototypes and were anyway being phased out from rallying in the 70's. The rallying SMs couldn't repeat the successes the DSs had had a decade earlier. There some pics of the Group 5 SM in the hide-out thread.

I went looking Ferrer... remarkable. Knowing Citroen's successes with the DS I don't know how I missed the SM development in the day. Must have been all those German distractions... which still plague me.

I really do like the SM racer's looks! It's so... unexpected.

If you read the sign placed next to the prototype, it mentions that it was developed for testing straight line speeds, and with 340 BHP on the tap it may have been able to reach speeds in the order of 280-290 kph. I don't think it was ever used for rallying, since it was made in 1973.

Here's the light blue car (the only other shortened one I have seen) that did race, as well as two "normal" versions, the 1974 car that participated in the Spa 24 hours (starting fourth from the grid but DNF). The yellow car is a participant of the 2000 version of the London Sydney Marathon (the original would have been won by a DS, were it not for a stupid Australian taxi driver).

All cars are shown at Retromobile, where the SM Club de France makes it an honour to present a unique SM each year. Jack Should know. .

I know this red and yellow prototype wasn't used for rallying, but Citroën did build a Group 5 SM to go rallying. They used it were they allowed prototypes which in the 70's were starting to disappear from rallying.

The "standard" Group 1 SM won the Morrocco rally and that was its only success as far as I know, and the Group 5 didn't win anything. But I'm speaking from memory. If you want when I'm a Barcelona I'll have more info about the rallying SMs campaigned by the factory.

First picture shows the Group 1 '71 Morrocco winner, second picture shows the Group 5 SM.
