How often do you hit 5,000 RPM - 7,000 RPM, and beyond in your car, daily/routinely? I just wanted to get a rough idea of how the general population drives.:)

Not very often. I have a V8 and it's an automatic so it stays pretty low.

Pussy. You need to keep it over 9,000...

I redline at 7500rpms, almost never go there... unless I'm on an adrenaline rush or maybe showing the car to a friend. I do hit 5k-6k on a daily basis, is just too much fun.

I hit redline (6500rpm) at least once a day getting onto the highway.

When it rains, so I can spin the 5th gear and see 200 km/h on the speedo whilst my real speed is 40 km/h :D

In the family 4wd hardly ever beyond 3000rpm, in the race car between 7500-9200rpm all the time with the new bottom end around 9600rpm:D

I included, it seems most of us may need to be drained of a little adrenaline. God, how I love to hit 7,000RPMs in 4th and 5th gear. Bless my soul. :)

if i want to burn all my oil....
i rarely red line. which is like 6,500. i do hit 5k or 5,500 once in a while. typically don't have to though. i have lots of low end torque. i like holding it at 3k to hear my intake howl!

At least 5,000 rpm more often than not (V8 auto)

6,000 revs in 1st gear = 29 mph!

I usually shift out of 1st at about 5000rpm, that's where the road speed is high enough to get into 2nd smoothly (yay for close-ratio gearboxes!), but apart from that I tend not to go much past the five grand mark. Tends to mean I'm going a bit too quick, and that's where it gets up on the cam and wants to, putting it midly, **** off into the distance.

I was kind of hoping you would waltz into this thread and scoff at the idea of engines that rev to a mere 7,000 rpm. What is the speed in 1st gear at redline?

I used to get to about 6K in my old car (redline at 6500), though in m new car I am doing 80km/h in first at 5000 odd.

About 160km/h, then 5 gears cover the next 140km/h or so.

Whenever I'm running late...which is often. You can't even hear the engine in the Diamante till you get above 4500-5000 or so. But once you're approaching redline its a very sweet noise indeed...if I didn't have to fix a thousand other things on it I'd be investing in a new exhaust so I could hear it below 4500rpm!

Its not for lack of trying.
A) engine runs out of puff (could have something to do with being run without oil for a fortnight)
B) I am sympathetic to the submarine - Its a sea creature too. The silvia deserved and wanted to but driven hard. The celica just likes its torque band.

Trust me - Leave the exhaust alone.

You'd be better off with a nice intake for that induction noise.

It's like the Mini. You try to drive it calmly. Then think what the hell am I doing, followed by downshifting a couple of gears and then pushing it all the way too 6750rpm.

It's so much fun. :)

In the RX8, it only lives above 6000 rpm :)
Shame to keep it locked up below that and all owners KNOW to rev it till the shift warning beep comes on and then some more. Only had the engine limiter cut in a few times, mainly on track when trying to find if 2nd or 3rd gear was the right one for the chicane :) So 9000 - 9500.

The A610 is 7500 ... mainly because it's not liking the track abuse it got and the head gaskets are not as good as the originals :(

Bike's good for 12500 and as soon as possible don't let it ever get below 8000

Most fun is trying to hit rev limit in reverse in kit car with bike engine and sequential box with a reverse lever ... 6 forward and 6 back makes for some life defining decisions :)

Redline at 4900 in my Fiesta. In the Berlingo it's like 4000 i think and the big van it's 3400 rpm. So I never even get to 5000 rpm nowadays :) My old Suzuki did 6800rpm though, great fun as max. power came around 5500rpm.

Fwiw after hearing Magna 3.0 'improved production' racers at Bathurst, I really was surprised how sweet the Mitsu V6 sounds through open pipes - nice warble, almost rivals the old Alfa V6 imo

The Pulsar redlines at 6500rpm but its useless past 4500rpm, so its only even touched 5000rpm once or twice. The Falcon would shift at 5500rpm when pushed hard, but it drove so smoothly just sitting around 2000rpm and you'd be speeding before you knew it anyway so you barely had to give it anything.

A 911S doesn't feel right unless you let it go to redline. :D

None of my other street cars have that quality, so I don't do it to them. But the 911 ASKS for it.

Nota that one is good for about 240kw at the wheels also, that would have been Ian Stathams smagma at the 12hr in IP, he beat a lot of bigger hp and lighter cars in that thing. He was saying a lot of the guys before qualifying were laughing at it, they soon shut up when he finished top 15 out of 55 cars by the end of the weekend :)

Not saying magna's sound bad with an exhaust - but your talking about the last gen magna correct? they ones they ran in the rally of canberra to prove that the AWD spec ones were actually capable cars..

exhausts tend to drone in auto's with an intake atleast you'd only get the noise when you want it.

I have no redline, but the rev limiter sets in at around 5000 or so. Never tried although I may have hit it once in 2nd gear when I was driving next to an Auto Union D-Type with the windows open. No need to rev in order to go fast. Very comfy. (also to the ears and the environment).

I take mine to the red about once a week, just to get it to temperature, it really doens't give much more beyond 5500, although the cut is at about 6500. usually i cruise in the highway at 100kms/h = 2900rpm, in the city it's between 1500 and 2500/3000.

i spend most of my time driving above 4k, and run it to redline most every time i drive. i have lately had a problem of running into the limiter on 1st because it is still pulling so strong.

Drove the RSX and Civic with the engine short of blowing up on a regular basis. The benz gets to stay calm.

I usually shift the GTI at either 3000 or 5000. 3 for around town driving, 5 for more spirited excursions. Since it's a turbo it's a lot happier the higher the rpms. It's not a very happy car below 2500 :( I redline it occasionally, usually entering the highway or on some of the back roads near my house, but I try not to do it too often ;)

No need to bring any of my cars up to 5,000+ rpm. They make a lot of low-end torque so high revs are not necessary.

Also since the engines in all 4 of my cars have not been rebuilt, and they range in age from 14 to 43 years old, I don't want to rev them too high.

At least once per drive, I like rowing through 2+ gears to redline but I can only do that getting on the highway.

Well, peak HP comes in my car @ 4100, and the trans shifts @ 4400 WOT. Had it up to 5k once on the dyno but the power fell off so sharply that I backed it down to 4500 on the next pull. In other words, the Mustang never hits 5k. Hell, it rarely hits 2k, tends to shift itself at 1300 the way I normally drive.

My motorcycle, on the other hand...:D

Yeah, since I got that carbon bit holding my valve open earlier this year, I try to run it up once a month and blow s**t out of there. With the leaner carb setting I haven't had any problems :) and 2" duals with cherry bombs should be reason enough to get some revs on the bad boy.

EDIT: of course, I don't get my 17mpg doing that...
