Nothing out of the ordinary here, just the car involved is one of the two original Lamborghini Gallardos the Italian police has, and which were paired with two new LP560s last year.

While on their way from Cremona to Bologna, this car and another normal police car had avoid a reckless driver who entered on the main street without checking. Unfortunately for the policemen even if they avoided that car they crashed against some others which were parked on the side of the road it appears.
The driver suffered of a broken rib and a slightly injured vertebrae, while the passenger is basically ok. They are both in good conditions, say the doctors.

I could find only one pic of the damaged car.
Before and after.

How can you end up underneath an A-Class doing street speeds?

Wow.

why do they have those as police cars anyway? is it kind of a PR thing or are they for high speed chases or something?

PR thing.
They are officially used for emergency transport (you know, lambos are famous for their trunks...), especially human organs.
They are also equipped with a portable defibrillator.

We use mainly Subarus (prev gen Impreza) and other random sedans for high speed things. They are unmarked cars, they follow you, tape your speed and then pull out a sign saying "busted". ;)

I'm pretty certain that's impossible in Italy.

It happens, just not as often as it should.

Who is this "we"? Are you the police spokesman now? :D

And what is the 3 strikes thing? Do they have 2 more Gallardos to muck about with?

Reading the first post, they have another 5 litre Gallardo and two LP560s.

HOLY SH*T! So was this reckless driver speeding or just not paying attention?
