Matra M670.
http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Sportsprototypes/M670/Gallery1/Medium/72lm15.jpg

Matra entered racing to win "for the honour of France".

This car won Le Mans 3 years running - 1972,73, 74 and then withdrew after 74 having achieved what they set out to do in F1 and Sportscars.
In the process they had developed the F1 V12 engine to a screaming success. A sound you HAVE to experience once in our life :)
Has to make it one of the best ever.

Well, I would have to say that the absolute best Le Mans car of all time is the Porsche 917. There were multiple entries the two years that this car won (1970 (Hans Hermann and Dickie Atwood) and 1971 (Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs Van Lennep)) at Le Mans, but I have one particular car that I would like to point out. Obviously, there is much credit owed to the two winning Porsches, but I have to give praise to the No. 25 Porsche 917LH (LH stands for Lang Heck, which is German for long tail) raced at Le Mans by the Salzburg team in 1970 with the driver lineup of Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens Jr. This car was ahead of its time and changed Le Mans racing forever. Porsche was the most radical manufacturer in the early 70's, and this is a fine example of their brilliance.

Nice pics !

You've lost the file suffix so automatic opening won't work for everyone !!
This looks like UCP doens't handle long file names, I'll look into that, in the meantime it's maybe bets to shortne the names :)

The Porsche 917 LH of 1970 could easily make a mess of the Ford GT 40

Matra M670, Porsche 917, Ford GT40, Ferrari 250 GTO, and the Audi R8. I think all these are great LeMan cars.

There were also some beautiful cars that went to Le Mans and didn't win, such as the ferrari 512s. There were eight of them in the 1970 race to my knowledge.
No. 5,6,7,8
Then the 2 Scuderia cars
Then the Francorchamps car
Then the american racing ferrari of Sam Posey
Any other cars you guys think looked real good at Le Mans, stylistically that is, that didn't win.
There are also some late 60', early 70's Alfa's I'd have to put on there too.

Nice Alpine.
There were some pre-917 porsche cars that were pretty sweet too. I can't get pictures, but I would also have to include the ferrari p4, mercedes slr, and the Shelby Daytona Coupe. They were all awesome cars, but again, I must say that the coolest and best Le Mans car of all time, without a doubt, is the Porsche 917.

Shelby Daytona coupe...it is sad to say other then the black and white pic with carool shelby and a few others that the only pics i have of the car are one i found in www.carinbarns.com very sad siteof good american cars that are rotting away in people sheds and driveways :( apprentkly that rotting daytona coupe is parked in some little old ladys driveway who has asked for $500,000 for the car...she knows what it is sadly...i would love to buy itand SAVE it

some of the daytona coupe, this time a French owned one that is regularly run is historic races. (there are some people who think this particular is not an original one though) The first pic shows the driver (Henri Pescarolo) just visible behind the car. Pics taken at Silverstone in the late nineties when Coys festivals were still booming.

thats what i thought too but that would be a good way to tell if it was a faker or not :) hell to gain an edge he may even be running the 347 stroker...wehad a guy in historics who was suppsodily running stroked 350...383 i thinkhe had...when rumors started spreading his camro resurfaced with a new engine....it also had some breathening changes...smaller carbies etc etc...i guess well never know....this was back in the appendix J days when i was all but 5 years old :)
And silly queastion Matra was that long tailed alpine offerd to the general public?

It is rumoured that this car has been built up from original spare parts, I don't think they would fit another engine, certainly when scrutineering is very strict as was done at Coys.

Well after the collapse of appendix J in our coutnry which allowed many freedoms...the rules stated they could use technology that has been used on the cars which saw mechanical fuel injection used ont eh falcons ala Super Falcon and alloy big blocks in the camros....Holdens wernt overtly popular untill the new catigory came about which posed many restrictions on the rest of the field....Now days they are alloud any manifold used on the car in raceing....must use a carbi...no injection...restrictions on cams...head must be stock(porting aloud stopped the use of dove and edelbrock heads)...30thou overbore and only things like that....we still use them to good effect with themost powerful cars in their field (ford mostly...i know i might sound like a fanboy but the termial speed the falcons and mustangs get speak for them selves)reaching 700 hp....But all of them rules go right out the window if you car was a genuine racer...Norm Beechys championship winning mustang still races to this day and has fatter wheels then everyone else in their feild and also totes mechanical injection system....

Shelby Daytona coupe...
Does anyone have any pics/ info on the AC Coupe that AC built for Le Mans?
It looked different too the Daytona coupe, and I saw one a few years ago, but didn't take any pictures.
Now I can't find anything about it.
IIRC it was the car that did 180 mph on the M1, resulting in the speed limit.
