What is it: The 5 Series, now in its sixth generation, has been the BMW’s bread-and-butter model for more than three decades.
Is it real: Yes, and it’s been such for several months.
What they said: “The epitome of the Ultimate Driving Machine,” Jack Pitney, a BMW marketing executive, said of the new 5 Series, after he power-glided onto the stand in a ferocious S1000 superbike. He emphasized that the new iterations of BMWs indicated that the company “is not just cautiously optimistic, we’re really, really optimistic.” The new 5 Series was among several other vehicles — none of them formally “new,” most of them kept under wraps until the news conference for no apparent reason — and then “introduced” on Wednesday.
What they didn’t say: The new 5 Series is a careful, comfortable evolution. It’s handsome but doesn’t exude the adventure of Audi’s A5 or the new Mercedes E-Class models.
What makes it tick: The base version 535i rolls along on the single twin-scroll turbo 6-cylinder, which purrs out 300 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. With the 8-speed automatic transmission, the 535i delivers 27 miles per gallon on the highway. Move up the 5 Series ladder, and there’s a roaring twin-turbocharged 400-horsepower V-8 in the 550i. Best yet, there are 6-speed manual transmissions for both. VERY INCONSPICUOUS SUBLIMINAL ADVERTISING! The 8-speed automatic gearbox is also available.
How much? How soon? The 535i will have a starting price of $50,475, and the 550i will start at $60,575 (both prices include $875 for destination and handling). You can expect to see the 5 Series in showrooms in June.
How does it look? It has the classic BMW front end, with a severe cut line at the front of the long hood. The newly streamlined silhouette gives the 5 Series a more cohesive look and stance from nose to tail.MORE SUPER SUBLIMINAL ADVERTISING. The interior panel has a bit more swoop that other BMWs. Rear seat legroom, with the front buckets all the way back, is painful.
